WW's Musings

What is it about the Emergency Room that it takes SO long to be seen?  We just got home after taking my mom to the ER.  I was there from 3:30 pm, it's now 11:30 pm.  Frankly, that's fast for the ER here.  What took the longest was just to get past the dang doors and be seen.  It took almost an hour for the nurse to come in and get her information (she had to stand outside the door to the room and tell her buddies how drunk she got at her birthday party first).

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking nurses.  The good ones are awesome.  I've had plenty take care of me just recently and I have no complaints about them.  But some just seem to be more interested in chatting everyone up than they are in patient care.

And, I swear there are some of the filthiest people in the ER.  I watched people get up from their seats when it was their turn and just leave trash and stuff all over the chairs, tables and floor.  I won't even talk about the bathroom.  It was just disgusting.   Why can't people pick up after themselves??  I mean, they passed at least one trash can on their way either to the desk or out the door.

Imagine what their homes must look like. YUCK
You and your mom have my sympathy about your long wait.

I agree there should be improvements in ER's, however they do triage people when they come in & people are not seen on a first come first serve basis. Many people use the ER as their primary care facility & thus tie up the services over colds & flu. There is no excuse for being a pig anywhere. If one cannot go without something to eat or drink in the ER waiting room, they should make sure that they leave no sign that they had anything to eat or drink. The same holds true in the restrooms. One must be careful to leave the restroom in such a way that others will be able to use it. Such consideration should be practiced everywhere.

Some people these days have the mind set that someone else will take care of it (the trash). It comes from being lazy and self centered regardless of where they are.

Texas has some of the most trashy hiways and streets. Overseas and up north, you rarely see trash on the hiways.

Littering is one of my pet peeves. I have been known to tell people to "Pick that up!" I have also been known to say "Your mother does not work here!" I have very little patience for such things.

Well, Between the nasty people that LIVE that way and the lazy hospital staff, its a wonder anything gets picked up. I tend to get very ugly with those that think everyone else is here to clean up after them, I probably would have nicely asked "Is that yours?" So that they knew it needed to be picked up. I realize, especially when you're in an emergency situation, that you can forget things like that. When they ignored me, I would have let them know just how disgusting I think they are and would have picked it up myself! just to make a point. I for one believe that Texas is one of the more littered states due to our immigration issues, I mean it's pretty nasty in Mexico- I mean REAL Mexico, not tourists cities.

You should try parkland. You'll be there for days. My hubby went in with chest pains and he was never seen. I took him to MCA and he was seen right away. 2 best (fastest) ER's I can give ya are MCA (arlington) and Harris Methodist in FT Worth. I've never had to wait more than 30 minutes to be seen at either.

Being seen in the ER is a joke! They KNOW the wait is entirely too long, and they do not CARE. If you went in for a minor emergency, by the time you are seen, it's a MAJOR emergency!

Thank God, I haven't had to go to the ER for years, and neither have my family. I dread the day we do. It's ridiculous! If possible, I just wait until I can be seen by my primary physician through the week.

Sorry I haven't been around, it was a late night last night. Not only did my mom go to the ER but my baby girl got her fingers slammed in the truck door. We had drama central here last night.

Nancy, add Medical City Dallas to that list...LOL...They have been awesome any time we ever needed them. Needless to say, that's not where we went.

Amen Onyx...I know when I broke me, I went in the this same hospital on a Friday morning, in an ambulance, no pain meds were given, and there was only one doc in the ER and I went in behind two cardiac arrests. Let's just say it took awhile.

I don't think any of these people would have understood it if I had told them to pick up, I seriously doubt they spoke any English.

The ER's are filled with people who go there instead of going to doctors and paying for it. Just another way of getting something free, not to mention the ones that continue to go there in an attempt to get drugs. So, the people that actually need the doctors end up waiting because of the druggies. Drives me nuts.

True, Pache. But, that's what the triage nurses are for. Now, I know that there were people there more sick than my mom, but we saw people go ahead of her that could have waited. One little girl came in with pinkeye. We wanted them to take her in right then. I know it's not an emergency, but it is extremely contagious and we didn't want it. She waited so long she finally left. There was a boy there that split three of his fingers in half lengthwise. He waited 2 hours past when my mom went back to be seen.

I do realize the the ER is a busy place, and mostly with pretty much non-emergency cases and drug seekers. But they could make it somewhat more efficient.

The Dr.'s & nurses have no control over the people who abuse the ER purpose. They are supposed to be for life and death emergencies. There are so many people uninsured now, they must use ER's for any medical need because they know the ER will not turn them away because they can't pay. To me, that is abuse of they system and should be dealt with in an appropriate manner. There should be a law that makes it illegal to use an ER for anything other than a life and death emergency.
As far as the trash being left around,,, that just shows what class people those people are. Littering in a public facility should be punishable by a stiff fine.

Well, I can say that we were not there for a (at that moment) life & death emergency. But, even if she had gone to a doctor, they would have sent her to the ER for treatment. So, while I can't say that there should be a law like that, I do see your point.

Sorry if I was too harsh in my opinion. Maybe the problem could be resolved if the Hospitals could set up 2 separate ER treatment areas.
1. - for actual EMERGENCIES, Trauma, Etc.
2. - a free after-hours clinic for any illnesses or non-emergency problems for people who do not have primary care Dr. because they have no ins. or money to pay.

I don't think you were harsh at all...LOL

The ER we went to has something kind of like that, I guess you could say. The have something they call PCE, Patient Care Express. It's for like sprained ankles, colds, ya know, simple stuff. It's open 24/7 just like the ER. The triage nurse sends you there if you're temp isn't high, your bp isn't up or various other factors are in place. I'd rather be sent there, they're nicer and faster...LOL

The human body has natural healing abilities. Holistic healing and alternative health care solutions support the body in healing itself.

A holistic therapy provides a complementary alternative healing method to standard medicine. Holistic health care includes alternative natural health remedies, like herbal healing, and an abundance of health and wellness products and services.

Agreed Barry, I am a big believer in holistic healing. I prefer not to use chemicals unless nothing else is working. We use lots of aromatherapy and soothing sounds for head aches and stress, and my hubby is a huge believer in hydrotherapy...If something hurts or you don't feel good, the first thing he says is "Go soak for awhile"....LOL

You can thank Kbailey H. for writing the lang. in the last big spending bill that removed the enforcement for our borders. K.B. wants to run for governor and needs all of the immgs. votes she can get. Doubt me, check her out.
While you are in the E.R. you are seeing your tax dollars at work. Help change the law so the illegals will be deported. Don't just complain about them help do something about them.

I agree with every preceding post. I'd add that it isn't only hospital emergency rooms that mismanaged. It's a truth that covers the entire hospital as far as I can tell. I am a retired nurse, trained the old-fashioned way (very patient oriented, empathetic, no time wasted). My husband was in 6 hospitals last year during a 4 month period, in ICU most of the time. He received excellent care in a couple of them, and atrocious care in the others. We are talking Dallas, Plano, Waco, and Houston. Most nurses nowadays are more technician than nurse, and I think nursing will be mostly phased out and replaced with as much electronic equipment as possible. I found that calmly expressing my unhappiness did no good. Talking to the head honcho did no good. In one bad hospital, I got the attention of the doctor by telling him to go to hell, then I hung up on him while he was talking. THAT, my frieds, got my husband LOTS of attention, all GOOD. What is the answer? I wish I knew. Perhaps each of us will have to just "play it by ear". One thing we must not forget is this: my body belongs to ME, no one else. Your body belongs to YOU, no one else. Take care of your body because it's possible no one else will take care of it.

WW - OMG - I am so sorry for your bad treatment at the ER.

I hope that your mom and your baby daughter are doing okay.

As a nurse, I hate that people get a raw deal when coming to the ER. ERs all over seem to speak for the healthcare profession in general and it is indeed terrible that anyone has to wait as long as they do nowdays.

I have also witnessed the type of nurses you are talking about who joke and tell stories while someone is waiting to be treated....I hate that and it goes against everything I believe. Their behavior is unprofessional and unexceptable. The patient should always be FIRST.

Again - my best to your mom and baby girl.

Thanks Boo :) I've learned to expect it, though...Isn't that sad??

Mom and Pickles are doing fine. Now if we can all just get over the "creepin crud" life will be great!!...LOL

I reckon nurses are people too, some just have less sense than others about what should (and shouldn't) be discussed in public. Gettin drunk confessions should probably stay in the breakroom.

So, did ya start the new year off right and go low-carb?? Hubby's been makin all kinds of good stuff and he said he'd share the recipes with ya...LOL

Oh, and my "baby" is 17 now...LOL...Not much of a baby anymore, huh???
