note to self: do not write "work at 8am" in red sharpie on your left
hand unless you want "ma8 ta krow" in spots on your face the next day. (Click photo for a couple notes-I can't upload photos here today because of some blog upgrades).
DIY Holiday - Part 1

A do-it-yourself holiday – is it possible? I think so. With
it being all official now with the recession, I know budgets are tight and
people aren’t sure how to do the holidays this year. I’ll tell you how – buy or
make handmade gifts! That’s why I’ll be sharing some DIY holiday tips with the
bloggers here at MyFoxMilwaukee.com during the next few weeks.
First, you should know of some great resources for buying
handmade items. First, check out all the local craft fairs. Did you know
MyFoxMilwaukee.com has a craft fair tracker? Click here to check it
out. Now you can find all of the local craft fairs. It features an
easy-to-use Google map. Simply click on the marker
to learn more about that event, including location, dates and items for sale.
Here are some tips, if you've never been to a craft fair before:
- Get there early for the best selection
- Get there near closing for the best deals
- Take a walk around before buying anything - you may find something similar you like more at another booth. Or, you might find it cheaper!
- Be prepared to pay cash. While many vendors will accept checks, most prefer you to pay in cash. And don't expect all vendors will accept credit cards. If this is more of a hobby than a business for them, they will likely not have the resources to offer that kind of payment option.
- If you see something you like, but would like it a lot better if it was a different color or size, just ask! Most vendors are more than happy to take custom orders!
- Ask for business cards or contact information. That way, if you like the items you bought, you can contact the seller for more.
If you’re not crafty or don’t feel like venturing out this winter,
you can do all of your handmade shopping online! There are a number of sites
out there with literally thousands (if not millions) of members worldwide.
The first, and most well-known, is Etsy. Etsy brands itself
as “Your place to buy and sell all things handmade.” I have bought many items
on Etsy… and even some supplies for my craft projects. You can search by
keyword, tags and category – or, just browse through the thousands of listings
and treasuries.
Then there’s ArtFire. ArtFire is new to the handmade market,
but certainly making a huge splash. According to www.artfire.com, ArtFire is the “Premier
online marketplace for handmade products designed by artisans around the globe.
Our free community is designed for artisans to buy and sell their works, while
celebrating unique handmade items and designs.” Like Etsy, you can search by
categories, tags or keywords. I have also bought items on ArtFire and found the
checkout process to be quite easy.
I will be sharing more online vendors for buying handmade
before Christmas, but now it’s time to share a DIY holiday gift idea.
Holiday Gift Frame
It doesn’t cost much (less than $10 to make) and would be a
great gift for a parent, grandparent, teacher or friend. These frames are also
fun projects for kids to make.
Supplies:
- Small Craft Frame (see below)
- Paint and Sponge Brush or other paint brushes
AND/OR
- Fun little papers, stickers and craft items and some glue
First, you’ll want to go to Michael’s or another craft/hobby
store. Go to the area with wood and look for the frames. You can get a plain,
basic pine frame for $1.00. I’ve used both the square and rectangle sized ones.
Here’s a cute little one that you could use: Tyler
Frame by Provo Craft.
Now, there are a couple options for decorating these frames.
You can 1) paint them 2) glue stuff on them or 3) paint them then glue stuff on
them.
The easiest thing, if you are not very crafty, would be to
paint the frames. You can get cheap acrylic paint for $.50 - $2. And, if you
keep an eye on the sales flyers, you might even find it cheaper. The paint you’ll
want to use you can find in the aisle near spray paint. They are in little
bottles and the common brands are FolkArt
Acrylic Paints and Apple
Barrel Colors.
To do a solid all-over color for the base, get a small,
cheap sponge brush (you can get these for about a quarter) and use to apply the
paint to the frame.
When it has dried, add more color or a fun design using a
smaller craft brush.
Now, if you would like to make your frame a little more
three-dimensional, grab your favorite adhesive (glue) or, for fast drying, use
a cool glue gun. Add your little embellishments, such as ribbon, flowers,
chipboard, gems, shells or other found objects and let dry.
Once you are satisfied with your frame, add a special photo
and wrap it up!
Here are some examples of frames I've made using some of my scrapbooking supplies:
If you have any questions about DIY holiday gifts or have some ideas, please share them by adding a comment to this post. I will have some more tips posted by Sunday at midnight!

One of my very good friends
Holly McCaig is the designer for a line of
scrapbooking paper & supplies. The company just unveiled one of its holiday lines, Sweet Cakes.
I'm excited for more crafty goodies designed by my friend, but also to show you this project she made with one of my photos!

I've also been meaning to blog about crafty stuff for awhile. When I'm not at work or playing with all my crafty supplies, I'm often at home digiscrapping. That's digital scrapbooking. It's similar to traditional scrapbooking (like above) only it's all done digitally. Here are a couple layouts I've made recently:

What I love about digital scrapbooking is the lack of a mess (all you need is your computer, digital photos and photo editing software) and you can scrap whenever, wherever you are. I've made some cards too! You can print out your projects at home, send them to a printer like Sam's Club, Walgreens or Target, or publish them in a cool photobook from places like
Blurb.com,
ArtsCow.com or
Shutterfly.com.
Well I guess that's all for my craft corner today. Just thought I'd share with you all some of my hobbies!

I recently had the opportunity to screen the first two episodes of the new season of HOUSE!
I will write up a full review soon, but wanted to let you know that Wisconsin gets mentioned...
Here's the quote, "You'll end up in a mobile oncology unit in Pewaukee Wisconsin."
HOUSE returns to FOX September 16 @ 7pm.
Oh, and the first two episodes are pretty good. House and Wilson go into couple's counseling! :)

So, I know I'm like a few years behind, but I am currently reading TWILIGHT, the first in a series of books by Stephenie Meyer for young adults.
The story is about a teenage girl named Bella who moves to rural Washington to live with her dad, and meets a mysterious boy named Edward.
I won't get into all the crazy details, but I will tell you Edward is a vampire.
It's bizarre but I'm totally hooked. Read almost 300 pages last night!
It's not at all gory or scary (
so far anyway) and the book actually paints the character of Edward in a very positive, human light. He's very chivalrous and separates himself from Bella when he isn't sure he can refrain from hurting here.
I can't explain why this book is so intriguing for me. I guess I'll have to let you know when I finish it (lol probably tonight!)
Here's a teaser from the back of the book:
About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him - and I don't know how dominant that part might be - that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
I think I just threw up

I decided to head over to Larry's Market for some lunch today. Got my favorite - twice-baked potato with sour cream (hot sauce is at my desk at work). Since they didn't have my Lemon Tarragon Chicken Salad today, I got a turkey sandwich. Of course... all wrapped up with a KILLER BROWNIE (yes, that's what they're called) and I tried something new: Honest Ade: Cranberry Lemonade.
oh my gosh. this is delicious stuff people.
while I did manage to spill it on my white shirt (I'm a klutz), I do have to say it is quite the thirst-quencher.
Wonder if I can get this at the grocery store?
Blockbuster? LOL. Are video rentals a thing of the past? Are we going "postal"? :)
Props to my
MyFoxKC colleague Whitney for pointing this out to me.

I am starting to lose faith in humanity.
Since when do you need that extra couple feet of room between you and your... laptop? Isn't the whole point of a laptop... to have the ability to use your computer - ON YOUR LAP?!
Yes that's right folks - you're seeing KEYBOARD PANTS in action. Seriously? Is this REALLY necessary? Oh, and your eyes aren't deceiving you - the keyboard pants come complete with a mouse.
Here's the description from Fubiz (translated from french using Babelfish):
An invention of Erik De Nijs with these trousers as a Jean,
integrating a keyboard bluetooth as well as loudspeakers and a
telegraphic mouse. Completely equipped for mobility, the explanations

Hot on the Web vol. 1

Some of you might remember my Hot on the Web segment last year on FOX 6 WakeUp. Well, I’m resurrecting it in blog form. I’ll blog about what I find on the Internets every Wednesday.
From now on, there will be Hot on the Web Wednesdays here at MyFoxMilwaukee.com. Sometimes, I might share a few web sites… while other weeks I might just talk about interesting concepts making waves online. We’ll have a mix of linky love for the ‘Average Joe’ and tech talk for the geeks out there like me.
A while back, I
told y’all about my ICanHasCheeseburger.com
therapy and I’ve found another site for all you animal lovers… CuteOverload.com! I’m pretty sure this
site could make even the most grumpy, angry person smile. You can’t help but
get a little smile on your face when scrolling through the different photos and
videos.
While I like to pride myself on my cooking skills (sans
recipe of course)… I think CookingByNumbers.com
is a very interesting idea. Basically, you log on, check the boxes
corresponding to what you have in your fridge and/or pantry… and voila – a recipe
for dinner! I haven’t tried any recipes yet, but it’s a very interesting
concept. If you try it, let me know how it goes!
I came across this
item while perusing various craft sites/forums. Not only is it perfect for
a TV web producer (such as me), it’s also handmade! I love handmade items! ArtSchoolDropOut.com
is selling it for $15. *Ahem* Christmas in April anyone?
Thanks for checking out the first HOT on the Web blog! Look for the next installment April 16. And, if you have a link you think I should check out, post a comment below!
UPDATE #1: I mistakenly left one fantastic item off this week's Hot on the Web -- You won't want to miss this killer YouTube Video! And by killer, I mean "Thriller."
No such luck

I've been so strong all month long... resisting the urge to swing through a McDonald's drive-thru for a Shamrock shake.
Just thinking about it makes me salivate.
Mmm...
But, seeing as though today is St. Patrick's Day and I'm working a night shift, tonight I thought I'd treat myself to a small shake instead of a soda when I ran down the street to grab supper. Now, I'm lactose intolerant so you have to know that it's a big deal when I break down and eat ice cream or custard.
Imagine my dismay when the drive-thru speaker said, "We don't have those tonight."
Seriously?!?! It's GOT to be the most popular day of the month for Shamrock shakes and it's not working?!?!? I think I actually said, "oh NOOOOOOOOOOOoooooo" in a really annoying, whiny voice before settling on a Diet Coke.
Misery sure does love company... the girl who took my money said she was super sad about it too! :)
Guess the luck o' the Irish wasn't with me tonight...
