Ok, I have a question for you bloggers.

I have come upon this driving situation three times in the last week. In two of the three situations, I feel I was "in the right" or had the "right of way" but the other driver must have thought he or she had the right of way. So, perhaps, I am not remembering my driving rules/codes of conduct properly.

In a situation where you are coming to a green light and there is a driver wanting to turn right, and a driver coming from the opposite direction wanting to turn left, who has the right of way? The person turning right or the person turning left?

(note, the street they are wanting to turn down is a single lane each direction).

C-----I'm assuming there is a red stop sign at the right turn intersection----so the driver in the vehicle turning right waits until the lane is clear.

The person turning right has the right of way.

Definately the person turning right has the right of way. I use to be a safety MNGr for a transportation company and use to teach driving skills classes. Mityhid is right.

The exception is what Fox6fan said.

If the right turn lane splits off and has a yield, stop sign or red light then they have to ensure it is clear before they proceed in making the right turn - even to someone making a left form the on-coming traffic lane.

Yup Yup...the driver turning right turns first.
Which never made sense to me considering the person turning right can usually turn when the light is red and it's clear, whereas the person turning left only has the green light to work with.
What I hate are the people who turn left after the light changes red and they are behind another vehicle. It holds up the people who get the green light. Just plain rude.

Well, according to Section Subchapter III of the state traffic law, 346.18 (http://www.legis.state.wi.us/statutes/Stat0346.pdf)>
(2) TURNING LEFT AT INTERSECTION. The operator of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left across the path of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction shall yield the right-of-way to such vehicle.

(6) RIGHT-OF-WAY WHERE YIELD SIGN INSTALLED. The operator of a vehicle, when approaching any intersection at which has been installed a yield sign, shall yield the right-of-way to other vehicles which have entered the intersection from an intersecting highway or which are approaching so closely on the intersecting highway as to constitute a hazard of collision and, if necessary, shall reduce speed or stop in order to so yield.

So it would seem that the person turning right has the right of way ahead of a left turner, UNLESS the right turn has a posted yield sign, in which case I believe the left turner has the right of way.

I have gotten into the habit of using "jerk". I usually have kids in the car and noticed I was teaching them bad words...lol.

The one turning right..........the one turning left is intersecting (crossing lines of) traffic, the one on the right is staying in the line of traffic.
