the real doglover

I don't know if you figured out yet or not, but I am a pretty outspoken person. Today, I could not speak.  I stood there in horror as I watched a situation unfold right before my eyes.

We went to the movies; as we exited into the lobby, my son saw the tail end of himself on a commercial he is in from one of the sponsors for the $2.50 summer movie deals at the Marcus Movie Theater.  We were going to wait for the loop to run through and show his friends.  Then the incident happened.

A woman, who was clearly with a daycare of some sort started talking sternly and tersely to this boy that looked to be about four.  Take your partner's hand, she said.  He stood there and just looked blank.  TAKE YOUR PARTNER'S HAND OR YOU DO NOT COME TO THE NEXT MOVIE.  He stood there looking, as if he didn't know what to do.  I think his partner already had someones hand.  ONE, she snapped, TWO OR YOU DO NOT COME TO THE NEXT MOVIE, she snaps again - he held his head down in shame.  THREE she demands and he looks around. YOU CAN TAKE ANYONE AND IT CAN BE MORE THAN TWO -FOUR, his head drops down again.  A little boy quietly moved to the right and grabbed his hand.  The front lady came to these boys and knelt down and softly spoke to him and then they moved on.

I was so shocked that I could not speak.  I can not even  remember the boys name.  I burst into tears.  As the group moved forward, another group came by.  I stopped a lady and said through choked tears - Do you know that group - that lady there?  No why?she says.  I really couldn't tell you if I told her everything or not, but she apologized for me being upset and see if there was anything they could do and then they were all gone.  The buses, the crowd, everyone.

I couldn't think, I couldn't talk and I just cried for what seemed like 10 minutes.  I couldn't wait anymore for that commercial to come around and told my son we would have to see it another time.  I cried all the way home - for a whole hour.  I kept thinking, does this mother know what she was sending her child off to for the day?  He did absolutely nothing wrong except he didn't know what to do.

After I got home and was able to think, I called the movie theater and spoke with the General Manager.  I asked him to review the tapes.  He said he would, but it wouldn't be in 5 minutes.  He said he would get back to me and has not.

Wisconsin has a State Agency that monitors Day Cares.  I called them and was put in touch with a supervisor.  She called the movie theater and the  manager thinks they are going to be back in a week and 1/2 and is going to try to get a name.  While on hold, I began to think clearly.  We all had to turn our tickets in at the cash register to get our free popcorn, I could identify her from that.  The agency is going to call back the movie theater and see if he would work with us on that or check the buses out front, if there were cameras there.  We could check with the bus company and see who they picked up.

If you have kids, hug them tight and think of this little boy.  If your kids are in daycare, make sure you take the time for surprise visits to make sure your child is being treated respectfully AND if your child went to see HORTON HEARS A WHO at the Mequon Movie theater at 10:00 today, is a quiet  boy, black with curly black hair -  who wore a red shirt you better change daycares ASAP The day care teacher was Caucasian and wearing tan clothing.

There is just something the way the air smells that you just know it's going to hit somewhere.  Maybe because it  is so still.  Once, I got of a train in White Plains and I was sniffing around thinking that smell was very familiar - a tornado.  Sure enough, one touched down not to far way.  They were very unusual for that area.

Today, as I was leaving for school, I just knew and according to the NWS - they are moving through Kenosha and Racine Counties.

You can just smell it in the air.  Anyone else feel that way?

Got it?

Tonight proved to be an interesting night.   We had our scout meeting at the North Shore Fire Department - Engine 4 and were working towards our Readyman badge that included basic first aid and the Heimlich. (Thanks guys you did a great job!!!!)

The scouting motto is "be prepared" and let me tell you - I was - thanks to Fox 6.  We arrived at 6:30 and got started over at the Paramedic Rig.  Seconds into the presentation, the bells started ringing and they were off on their first call!  Left standing with 12 boys, most people would have been Oh, NO!  But NOT me!  NOPE, I directed everyone into the living room and set up camp with my Fox6 Mini Ann doll and video!  You may have remembered my blog from this past September, but if you don't, or didn't blog back then - you can check it out here.

By the time we ran through the video, and each boy got a turn with Mini Ann and then we all practiced the Heimlich, after watching the video.  My proudest moment was when my son got down and demonstrated, on his own, how to use the mini annie and perform basic CPR.

By the time we finished, the Fire Engine came back and we were able to advance to basic first aid - just as we finished another call came in and we were left standing all by ourselves again!  What an exciting way to end the evening.

On thing I have to tell you, with boys they get all goofy when their attention isn't held and the mini Ann and video did the job.  So thanks to Fox 6 for that opportunity at Miller Park last September, I couldn't have gotten through this without you!

I guess their is only one survivor left from the Titanic now.  You can read about Barbara West Dainton here.   She passed away last week.

The movie Titanic got me fascinated with the boat, its history and its demise.  Did you know there are three people burried here in Milwaukee at Graceland Cemetary.  Edward G. Crosby did not survive, his wife and daughter did.  All are burried at Graceland.  We found them placing flags on Vetrans grave stones one year.  You can find them here.

Here is the link to other Titanic grave locations.  The links are to Findagrave.com.   It is an interesting website, you should check it out.  I have been able to find gravestones of family members on my dad's side.
