The first time I ever heard the word "meniscus" was in chemistry class in high school. You might remember that we measured liquids, the teacher told us to use the bottom of the meniscus, which is the curve you see when you look at the top of the liquid in the glass.
If you do remember that, good for you. I actually didn't until recently.
The next time I heard that word was from our former host Mike Jerrick. He used to joke about his "meniscus issues" whenever he wanted to get out of physical activity on the show.
My latest meniscus mention was from the orthopaedic surgeon I consulted about the severe knee pain I've been having for more than a month. He told me that the meniscus is the cartilage underneath the kneecap. An MRI told him mine is torn.
I wish I had an exciting bungee-jumping or rock climbing story to tell about how it happenend, but I don't really know. Bummer.
Why am I telling you all this and assuming you care?
I'm having arthroscopic surgery next week and won't be doing the weather on Good Day. A few of you have seen me limping around with a cane, and have been very kind. I thought the thing looked so cold and sterile that I crocheted a cover for it with fuzzy yarn. It's goofy for sure, but that, too, has been received well.
So, it looks like it'll be while before Dorothy and I will be reunited on teevee. We'll have to find the old Peaches and Herb song when that happens.
I'm hoping to return on April 9th. With luck, the joint will be jumpin' when I get back. get it??????

I have been the weather anchor on Good Day Philadelphia since December of 1997. It's been quite a ride, and I've been extremely fortunate. I've spent much of my time during the years taking weather on location. Those experiences have afforded me so many opportunities I never would have had otherwise. I've visited countless schools and been able to show our viewers some of the positive things going on in the classrooms in our area. We've been able to focus on the many teachers working very hard, and the students who will always remember when TV came to their school. I'm also proud of encouraging our viewers to be "tourists in their own hometown." We've taken you to special spots, like the Camden Children's Garden, the Constitution Center, and hundreds more. These are places I might have procrastinated about visiting on my own, but thanks to this job, I've been able to feel so much a part of this community as the folks out there have opened their arms. How lucky am I? My daughter has been a part of this program, periodically, from the time she was six months old. And even now, people who recognize me and Nia when we're out and about remember when I did the weather from our house on her first day of kindergarten. She is in fourth grade! So many of her childhood memories are preserved on Good Day, and I am grateful. Just in the last year, we've made astounding technological changes here at Fox 29, and it's exciting to work with the very latest in state-of-the-art technology. My latest thrill is this blog. I look forward to hearing from you!
