Our family is, once again, following American Idol avidly this season. We love the losers we see during the first few weeks, and there's no shortage of cheering and criticism as the contestants become fewer and fewer.
As far as I know, my nine-year-old knows nothing about the controversy surrounding Antonella Barba and her naughty internet photos. I'm glad the subject was not addressed during the program.
Since Antonella was clearly the worst singer on Wednesday night, yet was voted on to the next round, it got me to thinking about fame vs. talent, and all the recent media nuttiness surrounding Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith.
Spears, Smith, and yes, Barba: quite good-looking yet marginally talented. Yet they are attention-grabbers. And the more naughty they are, the more we talk about them.
One day, I'll be having a conversation about this as I continue to urge the kid to be as concerned about being beautiful on the inside as she is outwardly.
Weeks like this will make it even tougher.

I have been the weather anchor on Good Day Philadelphia since December of 1997. It's been quite a ride, and I've been extremely fortunate. I've spent much of my time during the years taking weather on location. Those experiences have afforded me so many opportunities I never would have had otherwise. I've visited countless schools and been able to show our viewers some of the positive things going on in the classrooms in our area. We've been able to focus on the many teachers working very hard, and the students who will always remember when TV came to their school. I'm also proud of encouraging our viewers to be "tourists in their own hometown." We've taken you to special spots, like the Camden Children's Garden, the Constitution Center, and hundreds more. These are places I might have procrastinated about visiting on my own, but thanks to this job, I've been able to feel so much a part of this community as the folks out there have opened their arms. How lucky am I? My daughter has been a part of this program, periodically, from the time she was six months old. And even now, people who recognize me and Nia when we're out and about remember when I did the weather from our house on her first day of kindergarten. She is in fourth grade! So many of her childhood memories are preserved on Good Day, and I am grateful. Just in the last year, we've made astounding technological changes here at Fox 29, and it's exciting to work with the very latest in state-of-the-art technology. My latest thrill is this blog. I look forward to hearing from you!
