I think it is terrible that such a positive organization has been given such a hard time from the city of Philadelphia. The Boy Scouts do so much to build character in the youth of today, where society and many parents seem to drop the ball.
There was one incident of where the scouts were hiking in the woods and came upon a woman who was seriously hurt. The all came together and with the skills they learned in scouting carried the woman for miles to safety and to additional medical help. Without the boy scouts that woman would more than likely have died.
Boy (and Girl) Scouts builds a great foundation for the youths, and those that were scouts are a much better citizen in society.
Philadelphia now wants to burden this fine group. They have for years paid a token rental for their headquarters in Philadelphia. But Philadelphia has reaped the rewards in many ways by having them in the city.
Now they want to raise the rent because Jannie Blackwell and others in city council don't like the rules about gays not allowed in Boy Scouting. The scouts cannot afford this escalated rent. Also the Boy Scouts have improved this property with many upgrades, and it only helps the neighborhood that this office is located in. If I were in charge of the boy scouts, I would not cave in to the lives of Jannie Blackwell and others and change my rules, I would move it to one of the suburbs that would appreciate this fine organization in their zip code.
