While not my original story, on the eve of this election, this is one of my favorite stories about how a young liberal gets a reality check from dear Dad.

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and was very much in favor of "the redistribution of wealth."  She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?"  She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."

Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."  The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

I must add comments to your blog, because you were so gracious to visti mine. I respect everything that you have said. Some I agree with, some I don't. I agree with you scenerio about the lesson for the girl struggling college and campus relationships, with faculty and fellow students. That is not a conservative lesson it is a people lessaon. I must disagree with this "politicaly correct" issue. Many who complain about political correctness want to expose thier hate without limits. I am not refering to you, just that this word is flung around so ramdomly. Do you think God smiled on those who spit on people who only wanted to get an education, and then went to church each Sunday? We have many evils on both sides Left and Right. It is time to unit, and make this country into the way it was written on paper. Keep blogging, and I will always have an open ear to someone with honest views.

Few people agree on everything. I appreciate your response. This was more a parable than an attempt at political correctness. The fact is that this nation works because there is a reward for those who work hard, take risks and try to make a life for themselves. If you take that away by government edict, the incentive is gone and mediocrity sets in. As a result, the standard of living of the whole country goes down and everyone is actually worse off. And those who thought they would benefit from wealth redistribution end up no better off. This concept has been tried without success all over the world. The only reason it seems to be working in China at the monent is because they've adopted capitalist economic policies within a communist social and political environment.

There is a lot of injustice all over the world, not just in America. The difference is that in America people have the opportunity to overcome injustice and not wallow in it and keep using it as an excuse or against others who never had a part of the injustice in the first place. What many did in the past was wrong, but many of them are dead. We still have some who act improperly. As you said, we have them on both sides. And that is not right. But it's not an excuse to adopt socialist or communist policies when what we've fought for as a nation numerous times in the past 200 years is for personal freedom to live without government interference, to be free to work, worship and live as we please. That freedom is slowing being eroded away and most Americans are asleep at the switch. They're g

They're going to wake up one day and wonder what happened and how they ended up living in a George Orwellian novel. But it will be reality, and it will be too late to change, and WE will have been reponsible for it.

I have some African American friends who realized that if they were going to make a better life for themselves, they had to get out of the city and their neighborhood and move. I'm not sure that is what must be done to accomplish this. But they have moved out to new areas, like Berks County, have great jobs and nice houses and no longer have to put up with the constant threat of crime, drugs, family breakdowns and sexual perversion. It's by no means perfect, and there are still dangers, of course. But they are no longer victims of their past or their upbringing. And the communities into which they moved have accepted them well. And they are all extremely happy with their lives.

We need to get past the past, walk in forgiveness and work together to help each other achieve a better tomorrow. My view is that people, charities and churches do this better than government ever could. The problem is that government is now trying to tell people, charities and churches how they will do this and to what beliefs they must adhere. And that is wrong. Injustice must be a concern of both liberals and conservatives. But it is not the goverment's responsibility to correct every society ill. They only make a bad situation worse. That's why our nation was founded on the principle of LIMITED government, VERY LIMITED government. They'd be shocked to see how much

control the government has over our citizens today and how much of their money they take in taxes, which accomplishes few benefits to the average citizen.

As for political correctness, I don't think it's hate. This nation was founded on the free exchange and debate and the free exercise of one's religious faith and beliefs. Today, if you believe abortion is wrong, believe that homosexuality is a sinful lifestyle not to be promoted, believe evidence that supports the theory that global warming is not caused by humans, believe that Darwin was wrong in many of his theories and that there is or may be a creator, you are labeled an intolerant bigot. That is just not true and should not be tolerated by a free society. When one can't even pray in public, can't be a professor who does not accept the evolution theory without being fired or mocked, can't believe that homosexuality is a choice not a gene, and can't admit that the terrorists wanting to destroy America and Israel are radical Islamic terrorists, something is wrong. Political correctness has stifled debate and discussion as everyone paints those with certain ideas as hateful. That's not true. I don't hate anyone, but I should be able to stand up for what I believe in a free country even if a majority of the country disagrees with me. It just seems liberals have and want to have the right to say and do anything they want at any time in any place. But when I, a conservative, want to exercise the same rights and freedoms, I am called hateful, a bigot, an uneducated fool, intolerant, a crusader, out of touch with

reality, living in the Dark Ages, and on and on. None of them true, of course. And conservatives are traditionally and typically not good at defending themselves and their rights because they don't feel they should have to. It's very frustrating.

I agree there are evils on both sides. But shutting down debate and looking to government for the anwswers and solutions is not effective, and we'll all lose in the end.

A conservative eternal optimist. The sun is rising, not setting. But I am concerned about the condition of our nation and how indoctrinated we have become as a society with liberal ideologies that don't encourage or teach people to think for themselves and reach their own conclusions. And the lack of moral absolutes today in our society is more dangerous than anything else, including radical Islam. And I am sick of political correctness. It's going to kill us all. I strongly believe in prayer and in the mercy and goodness of God. But for the grace of God, the sun would have already set on this nation.
