You know we weren't any better human beings during the depression and WW's I and II than folks are now son!   You think there wasn't a lot of lazy so and so's back then as there are now?  You think that your generation cornered the market on greed and apathy?  Where do think they got the appetite son?  You think we were all noble for going to war to save the Jews from the Nazi's?  Hell we were mostly disdainful and racist toward Jews and Jewish immigrants back then and a majority of us didn't believe the reports of the atrocities being committed in Nazi Germany until they came out with "Hogans Hero's."

Stop it son!  Stop looking to some good old harder working more moral good ole days cause they didn't exsist then anymore than you complain about them not existing now.  Or do you think the depression happened because of all the hard work that was going on?  Do you think we went to war because we all of the sudden cared about the Polish People?  Don't you remember the racist publications, advertisements, radio commercials and broadcasts of the those days son?  Don't you remember how we put the Japanese into internment camps for their "protection" while at the same time they still signed up to serve in the Armed Forces as American soldiers?  Don't you remember the hard work of Black Army Engineer Brigades building roads in China and too Alaska that were nothing short of miraculous but we didn't think it necessary to laud those achievements?

Don't you think that the fact the even though Black American soldiers fought with distinction for the Union in 3 previous wars that we could have at least stopped legal lynchings if not made voting booths more accessible?

You got it all wrong son!  This is the great generation!  NOW is always the great generation and you need to open your heart and mouth to the good that's going on in your world today!

and that's my opinion

on this one I agree with you ..there was nothing great about the past ..the idea that it was a simpler time should not distract from all that was wrong in every generation ....things only seem worse because the sights and sounds or the world are now in our living rooms .the racist past of our nation should never be forgotten and true everytime blacks were allowed to be included in those societies of the past they excelled in every thing especially on the battlefield and in the skies over Germany and came back home to an ungrateful nation who looked at them as second class citizens ..those werent better times they were only safer times for some who were afraid of change and acceptance..the thing about everyone who thinks the past was so great it that these times will be the past someday too so your right theses are best of times and the worst of times

I am guessing this is an answer to Don's 100th blog about how much better we were in the depression and how much better the greatest generation was. I very much agree Statueman. Our racist past continues to cloud our attempts to really do right in the world. Oh well. Find me a nation which has not done bad things. I hope that a hundred years from now people will see that America truly turned a new leaf.

I'm a retired vet who loves to come up with donut shop solutions through soup kitchen prophecies. My goal is to encourage the growth of alternative sentencing through "habilitation" programs. These quiet unsung organizations need our quiet unsung support. (Edit May 24, 2008, Of course since then I've been getting into more interesting material.) _________________________

OK... all predictions deleted since Mccain didn't win. Brook White didn't win Idol and Hillary didn't drop out of the election. Congratulations to us all on a new President. The first President to be only half white as far as we all know. But it's ok the separatist have been predicting an invasion of mongrel hordes and let's hope they took their can openers to their caves. After all... this really is a free country.
