You ever want to write something or do something that would change the world for the better?

I was sitting outside getting some fresh air and thinking of all the problems we have in this country with our legal justice system.  Then I thought of how incredibly effective the integration of the Uniformed Military Services are... I thought of some of the wonderful articles on Military History I read while I was working in a training and doctrines command and then I thought of the one thing that stuck in my head as being one of the main reasons why ours is the best military on the face of the earth.  That one reason is that military historians interviewed everyone within the scope of a mission to see what went wrong and what went right.  So the officers could not hide from the observations of mere privates.  No prestige is taken into account... just hard cold overall facts that show how, from top to bottom, to increase operational effectiveness.

Then I got to thinking about those Philly cops who beat those suspects... about that man who spent time in jail and wanted a lying prosecutor to go to jail because he claims the man lied... about the other lawyer who said that no one would want to work in our justice system if that prosecutor is sent to jail.  I got to thinking how wonderful it would be if we approached our justice system the way the military historians approach operational procedures.

It dawned on me that what is legal needs to line up with what is just and that in so many instances we have operational procedures in our legal system that don't allow that.  What if we approached our legal system with blanket amenesty inorder to take a more accurate historical record of what we are doing that is working and what we are doing that is not working?

So that's my psuedo educated theory...  Justice is no easy word to define and illegal may not necessarily mean unjust.   The domestic foot soldiers we have in our police forces need our suppot.  And lately I've been very saddened by the fact that I cannot support the unjust actions of police officers who beat three young men they believed shot and killed one their fellow officers.  But isn't this just the sort of behavior we've come to accept and even expect in this country?  We can make movies about the problem but can't seem to find any solution.  For my part I submit that there is a solution already there that we simply refuse to implement.  And that solution I say with pride can be found in how our own military historians go about the task of improving our war making abitlities.

Remember the movie "Glory"?  It fills me with pride to think of a unit of African American Federal giving their lives for this country... the movie I'm sure filled many people with pride.  We fight for a greater cause in this country.  One of the only sentences I remember from basic training when I was in the Army was when my black captain and company commander said, "Welcome to the United States Army... The most successfully integrated organization on the face of this earth."  And I believe that there is alot to be learned from our Military that would translate well into our legal system to create a more Just and integrated American society where  what is illegal is so because it is unjust.

our legal system is immoral and unjust unfortunately its what we have to work with ..a military justice system is headed by a tribunal and because of such we you dont have to rely on jurors who are either not of your peers ..what happened in Philadelphia was disgusting more and more the police have been playing judge jury and executioner and when when they are caught they are either put on leave with pay or given administrative duties ..if any of us citizens did or participated or even were standing there and did nothing we would be locked up with an outrageous bail if there was bail and sit in jail til a trial could be held in if your lucky a years time if you had little or no money you would get some dump truck lawyer who will tell you to take a deal even if your innocent you would be found guilty if you go to trial unless you have the money to buy your way out or get a sympathetic jury or an enamored one as in O.J. Robert Blake,Phil Spector who isn't made up of relatives of the police..if you take the deal you will be given a light sentence to probation and will forever be part of the system you can never escape from..you in essence would be doing life only on the outside..

Well, I wasn't talking about a military justice system only the ways and means for perfecting how we look at the history of our justice system.

I think that accurate reporting of historical events makes for great improvements of human society. To me the missing factors are total disclosure and a honesty from top to bottom. If it is our aim to be a just society of just laws, and of course it is... how do we go about improving the whole system. We seem to go from election to election doing the same old things the same ways and expecting different results.

There are solutions to the fact that we have such a large portion of our population in jail. There are solutions that can make for a more productive and prosperous society and I believe that many of those solutions can be found in documents as unassuming as the leadership field manuals of the US Army. (Perhaps I'm a little biased... but I think history makes my case for me.)

there is no accurate reporting its all slanted yellow journalism and fox and CNN lead the way..nobody in this state is going to tell you we need to improve the jail system its the only business left in California other then the film industry and we are losing that as well..its beyond me that no body has looked into our prison system as well as the parole system ..i don't know anyone who can tell me why a top Ramon soup that sell in markets for about 12 cents is sold to inmates for over a dollar..and has anyone looked on who sells it to those inmates ??..why is it when someone has strep throat in jail they are given antacids from someone who barely speaks English..why dose staff infection run ram pent and rats roam the tiers?..why do deputy's call the inmates a bunch of guilty f*cks before they ever had a trial?why do they beat inmates?you think what you saw in Philly is something rare ?why are some inmates not even allowed phones?why would a deputy kick a bible out of your hands?and walk down the tier eating ice cream and pizza when you only get to eat peanut butter and jelly every day and get 1 lukewarm meal a day?why do pedophiles and rapist get special treatment?why do deputy's turn the temperature below 50 and give you a blanket as thin as paper ..why if you call the ACLU on those deputies you wont get your mail and they pass around pictures of your girlfriend..think its all bull? I lived it i hate this system all i said is going on everyday that and more..right here in LA. county jail not Iraq..from sadistic deputy's to crooked lawyers to judges who work with the D.A

I've worked with parole agents and correctional officers when I was in the Guard. I've given many a bible study to men who've been in prisons all over southern california. I've sat and listened to stories that had me in tears later trying to forget what I'd heard and the chilling way the story was told.

I'm afraid I know more than you might give me credit for... thus my focus on alternative sentencing.

We have a nation worth fighting for and believing in. Crime and punishment are difficult but not impossible issues.

stat,

That's why we have to continue to work at crime and punishment, and we have to succeed. Once we STOP trying and succeeding, we are finished!!

I'm a retired vet who loves to come up with donut shop solutions through soup kitchen prophecies. My goal is to encourage the growth of alternative sentencing through "habilitation" programs. These quiet unsung organizations need our quiet unsung support. (Edit May 24, 2008, Of course since then I've been getting into more interesting material.) _________________________
