For those of you who are in support of police who beat criminal suspects.  For those of you who are in support of torture of terrorist suspects.  For those of you who are in support of corporal punishment to stop violence.

I have some questions.

  1. Are criminal suspects guilty before proven innocent or innocent before proven guilty?
  2. Should we bring back corporal punishment in this country and administer beatings for some convicted criminals instead of jail time?
  3. Should we allow police to beat suspects as a deterrent to further criminal behavior?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions please do not vote for Senator John Mc Cain for President.  Back in 2005 or so I was watching Senator John Mc Cain take on President Bush about torture.  It had come out that we were using torture in our quest to stop terrorism.  Senator Mc Cain was and is adamantly against torture.

Many Americans, it would seem, support the use of torture.  From a November 2006 article in the National Catholic Reporter “Americans, especially Catholics, approve of torture” I find out that only 32% of Americans totally disapprove of torture.   As a Christian I am not surprised that in the polls breakdown more secular humanist are against torture than evangelicals.  In a 2004 NBC poll the 63% of Americans said torture of terror suspects is never acceptable.

We are making a mistake in this country when we support torture.  I believe with all my heart and intellect that more police will stare death in the face this year because of the type of behavior we have recently witnessed.  I believe that more soldiers will die overseas this year because we as Americans are asking for more and more violence instead of living up to the ideals of freedom on which our country was founded.

Now I know that many folks believe it is ok sometimes to torture.  Fox’s O’ Reilly had to disagree with Senator Mc Cain in an interview on the subject.   That’s one reason why I’m voting for Senator Mc Cain.  If we are going to act like terrorists in this country… then we are going to continue to be victims of terrorism.  I believe there should be an automatic death penalty for murdering a police officer but I do not believe we should in any way support police officers beating restrained suspects.  That is torture... that is terrorism... and there is no way we as Americans should support it.

odd that you pick out Catholics ... even highlight it ... especially when It was the number 1 catholic who was tortured, beaten, and put to death (temporarily). ... and he was innocent!!

that wasn't on purpose... it was the first in my google on the subject... please note that the figure comes from the National Catholic Reporter.

The Apostle Peter says that if you suffer unjustly and take it patiently it is of great reward. Paul talks about filling up the measure of Christ suffering and spreading the gospel of Gods Love. Would you have me believe that part of that includes Christians justifying the use of torture because Christ suffered?

No... I was not picking out Catholics and though I'm protestant and consider Christ the first and only obedient son of our common creator I AM... I will not begrudge your calling him the first catholic. Though my bias leads me to conclude that I should not expect someone else to turn the other cheek for me.

Funny, I'm catholic and I can't recall EVER being approached by the national Catholic Reporter for my vote or opinion. Taking a poll from that would be the equivelent of me using a poll from Jet magazine to get all blacks points of views.

OK you win... I was bashing catholics... that what you want me to say? Or are you just drawing away from the subject of this blog to play the martyr?

So let me get this strait... there is catholic people and there are black people. Wow... if there are no black people in your perish then look in the mirror and you'll see why.

Elitist thinking justifies torture. Don't let your Padre do all your bible reading and praying for you.

not drawing away fromt the subject, just your stats and where you got them. ..and your last sentence validates what i originally got from your message. Typical brainwashing by evangelical ministries. The priest does not do all the bible reading and praying for us ... but then if you did a study of religions you'd discover this on your own. When it comes to religion the Bible is just a spec in the universe, not the center of it.

if you're alluding to the fact that i may not give to catholic charities ... you are incorrect... although I tend to give more to purple heart ... a veterans charity .. and i try not to look in the mirror

ibejim,

Catholic Charities by all reports I've heard are excellent responisible ministries in both St Louis and Los Angeles. Now tell me a story about a man named Jed.

LJ69,

You can't figure me out and your mortar fire is so off I think I'm being serenaded by swamp gas. I grew up in a catholic family and know first hand that for most "I'm Catholic" catholics the dustiest book in the house. The Sermon on the Mount is for me the very center of creation and I make no excuses for that. Alot of folks talk alot of fine sounding nonsense but I look for the poor in spirit. You'll find such folks working at the catholic cherities... If it wasn't for the words that Christ spoke we wouldn't be able to speak so freely now.

You must like Barack... calling folks typical... maybe I should call you sweetie...
(thanks for your comments :)

Wrong assumption LJ. I was referring to some of the people that catholic charities help. My statement was motivated by this line by statueman...."if there are no black people in your perish then look in the mirror and you'll see why."

just read your bio so sorry for the sweetie remark. But you do seem to think you can project your families values into a place where there is no family to value.

It's sad but the old "they've got it better than us" rhetoric is even sadder. It's apathetic and presumptious to the point that we are where we are because of such an attitude.

There is a solution and what you say may be part of it... but you cannot re-habilitate folks who aren't habilitated to begin with. I don't know if you're a combat vet but my respect to a Vietnam Veteran.

i was with Naval Intelligence working with crypto devices. These folks who you say are not habilitated have no excuse. They went to the same schools I did. They are not assimulated is more like it.. and it's a deliberate act not to be. Some people are happy in their ignorance ... chris rock said it all when he said, nothing makes a n*gg*r happier than not knowing. If this is truly the case then there isn't much hope ... and i guess it's the rest of societies responsibility to make sure the cancer don't spread. keep it contained. I really hope this isn't the case.

This is just a blog... what, 4 to 12 people will read it and ... well.

I like Chris rock... I actually like you too cause you're talking but don't expect me to pull any punches. I looked at your blogs but you haven't written any lately.

Please start one so I can come pick on you. By the way and Italian Army buddy of mine told me that joke about Italians and I'm sorry if I offended you. I use humor alot and this blog is an exception.

I once woke up in a Catholic Hospital and had a nun and a priest telling me what a miracle it was I had survived. Now before that I had been nearly anti-catholic. I choke up at the memory of their love and even called the priest Father one time... (I always call priest "Sir") turned out he was a 'brother'... not a lay miniter but something else.

I hope we can continue to spar and I will refrain from using humor if it offends you.
