As I was sitting here and listening to the music on my I-pod I came up with a great idea for a fun blog post.  What is your favorite non-mainstream band.  I am talking about a band that has albums out but are not on the radio.  They are great to listen to and you consider them one of your top bands to listen to any day.  Oh, it does not have to be a band, it can be an individual singer!

As for as me, gotta be Flogging Molly.  I love the idea of traditional Irish instruments mixed in with a rock band.  The music is awesome to listen to and they get my spirits up any day I listen to them.  Not to mention they are great as a live band too.  I am looking forward for when they come back to the St. Louis area.

Here are some of my favorite non-mainstream groups!!!!?

Rancho-Chango, the Electric Quintet
Explosion in the Outhouse
Rambo: The Musical
Sweat Sweater and the Irish Setters
Manic Mike and the Musky Maestros of Akron (Ohio's premier acoustic noise trance abolitionist pop collective)
THWACK
Bjorn Ulgastaffen and the Sous Chefs
Ooga Booga: A John Cage Cover Band
Anger Adam and his Atom Astronauts (kind of like if the Flaming Lips cannabalized KC and the Sunshine Band)

There are so many more out there but that's all I can think about off the top of my head!!!!!!!

Thanks to the internet, I have learned of an entire universe of great music out there, most of which we would have never heard if we had to depend on the corporate-sponsored pop radio stations and air play. I never knew much of this music existed!

I love the way the RIAA tries to control downloads! They just won't give up, will they? They just won't admit that we the people now have a way to hear music they aren't making billions in profit from!

Keep the digital music coming! A new era of music freedom has begun!

And it probably doesn't involve the tradional giant record companies. Too bad for them.

Although they get limited radio play, Tool is my favorite band. They have to be in the top 10 talented bands of all time. They are also one of the most mis-understood groups ever. Every member of thier band is amazing, a true master of the instrument they play. Especially Danny Carey their drummer. For all you Led Zeppelin fans out there, they did their own version of No Quarter, that literally blows the original away. Amazing. Artwork from Alex Grey.

By the way, that song is live, from their Salival DVD/CD. It makes it even more amazing.

About the downloading issue, I believe the new era of music downloads may be based around what Radiohead did with their new album. They released it to the public for full d/l on their website, and made it possible to make an optional donation, of your choice, to the band. This is an ingenious way of handling this issue. I would think this would put more money in the pockets of the artists, rather than the record company. BTW, Radiohead is another very talented but under-rated band. Check 'em out.
