Listening to the airing of getting up early to put your turkey in the oven, many of us oldtimers have prepared the turkey/stuffing the night before.. perhaps for decades.....carefully wrapping,   washing with cold water, basting, buttering the skin, so why wait til morning to pop it into the oven!!!

Esp. with the stuffing temp. at risk? News of the stuffing temp. staying at room temp in the deeper parts of the turkey.. . one year I decided to pop it into a slow oven and let the turkey bake while I was sleeping... due to travel time in the a.m.

This requires careful stuffing..buttering the skin, and adding  a little water...my secret is to put a raw apple quartered into the center to absorb excess 'grease' as the turkey slow-cooks. One part of the turkeys neck has mushroom onion stuffing and the inside has cranberry stuffing for choosey eaters....

Two years in a row I have put my turkey prepared as above into my oven at say 9-10 p.m.  or so and set my oven temp. at  250 degrees....setting my alarm for the wee  hrs. to drain excess licquid  that I save for gravy makings.. When I get up at  8 a.m. for the day; my turkey is deliciously golden and ready for the noontime meal...It is baked so slowly that the meat falls from the bone......a bit of imagination, sealed in foil insures the moistness of the beast!!    It is .cooked through and through....Removing the top foil at the wee hrs.  -1 a.m. or so--a bathroom break such as those of us who wake up in the night to potty!  This is the time to drain excess juices----- Well, that bathroom break is  wut happens as one enters the golden years.

This frees my oven for those pies, casseroles, etc.

This year we are taking mincemeat pie and a frozen keylime as my dau. will have the traditional pumpkin and my other dau. will bring a sweet potatoe pie...yes,   we are grateful for the opportunity to share our health and wealth and time with our loved ones....thinking of the military persons who are not so lucky while they are serving overseas!  Praying for their health, wealth, and happiness also when we are tucked safely in our homes. . .  now time to kick back and enjoy t.v., visit , and be thankful for our health.

Carving the turkey comes at noon meal and also allows transport time to my grandkids house...  with the  cooked turkey in tow. . . wrapped to keep it warm..

It is in the refrig today covered in foil and ready for  'rewarming' in another house!  Of course, put it back in the oven at 250 to rewarm. Enjoy!

A certain  back   dock   in Oldtown is a  catch-all  for kids.....and also the graffiti that follows with the young and restless........

He stepped off the precipice of civilized humanity into the free fall of unadulterated  animal  lust.......

everything is illuminated

08-01-08    author [s]  unknown

So it is one of our  beautiful Colorado moonlight nights and believe me, the  'vampires'  are out in full force by another Oldtown  busy  bar....

As I scooted home from 7-11  there were some nice lookin legs in heels  slowly kicking away, knees crossed, as i looked further the  girl was a guy  dressed in drag - if that is the proper name, well a rather rough looking face, if don't say so myself....whatever trips your trigger, except someone would have to be pretty tripped out and drunk to fall for that gag.

A ways up in the 7-11 parking lot was the man  lying prone by his knapsack, a brother to this other drag person by the texture of their unnaturally thin hair, dirty fingernails, dirtier clothing and pretty layed out  lookin as if he was very tired and worn, I wondered why he didn't seek the shelter of the alley, as opposed to  lying there where someone could easily pull into the parking lot where he was choosing to rest for a bit. Reporting to the on duty manager a transient person was  'loitering'...."No," he replied, to my request that he look out and simply said: "---we'll  see  if he moves along on his own."

With that attitude the world would indeed go on by recklessly and carelessly making one wonder  what our world is coming too?

Then the line to the  more famous bar popular to the college students looked like  another  wherewith  to  beset upon by the  local [?]  hookers .....young ladies with those six inch skirts and not much else for  shirts lined up to fend for the best looking  guys who seemed more appropriately dressed, or  perhaps was i just having a  'wish i were younger moment'  But the guys looked much better to me than the girls?   Yes, reality cheak, must still be in a heterosexual world.

The graffiti in the  Box Bar a bit further down the road [45 miles] to be exact which is famous for its  cup   cup   dart-board  antics  proved to be  quite dead on a Sunday p.m. with a  well-stocked hard licquor bar that  did sell on Sundays, if there were any customers, that is!

A sign of the hard times  we are facing?

Somewhere in our retirement building the news of a long term tenant passing or moving gets around quickly...in this case, belatedly to me...so  the crippling knee disease that suddenly incapacitated our  long term tenant upstairs on fourth floor has   got another of us entered into an assisted living  care facility, as it is...  ...our joyful Joyce, single and no children   -- wutta  life...to end up in a care facility???

Sometimes, I believe when love abounds, business, and chatter of children keeps one s soul in sink...and from old age  whatta   u get....?????--with the business of not being able to walk  independantly,  well..........a care facility...  what with the expense of a mobility scooter, I once raise up the motion for  a need based  scooter to keep ones independance  and privacy. . .  with Volunteers of America  doin the  frozen meals to you with  special love and care, and diet...yes, thats a  solution...get a mobility scooter and have your  meals  prepared for you, at least part of them....

So Joyce, as we sort thru things left behind of dishes, a fancy wooden rolling pin , and frosting  decorations,  fav white coffee mug,  i will use in memory of you.....

McDonalds will miss her as that was her  pt-time job for over four years that I knew her..

HOME MADE YEAST

Wash, pare, and soak one large potato. Steep one TB. of hops (loose) In one pint of boiling water; mix one heaping TB of flour, one Tsp. of sugar, one tsp. of salt, one tsp. of ginger; grate the potato into the flour mixture.

Let the hot water boil briskly for one minute, strain it over the flour and potato mixture, then mix thoroughly; if it does not thicken like starch, place it over the fire for a few minutes, stirring briskly. If too thick, add boiling water til think as cream.

When lukewarm or at 70 degrees, add one half cake of yeast.

Raise in a warm place til frothy, beat it down every half hour. Bottle and keep in a cool place.

THREE HOUR BREAD

Pour one cupful of boiling water over two tablespoonfuls of flour and beat well; when this becomes lukewarm add two teaspoonfuls of sugar and one-yeast cake that has been dissolved in one half cupful of lukewarm water. Beat thoroughly, adding flour enough to make a thick batter, beat until light and set in a warm place, about 90 degrees. F. Keep covered and let rise til light and frothy, with this proportion of yeast it should rise in thirty minutes.

When light add one cupful of scalded milk, cooled to lukewarm, and flour enough to make a stiff dough; stir in the flour with a spoon, beating it thoroughly; when the dough begins to stiffen, cut in the flour with a bread knife; add flour until the dough slips easily from the board, and does not stick to the hands. Then knead the dough on a slightly floured board til smooth, elastic, and full of air bubbles

Knead it firmly, but lightly, using only the wrist movements, put back in bowl, cover, and let rise in warm place until it doubles in shape.

Shape into loaves, or biscuit; brush lightly with melted butter, and place in warm buttered pan. Let rise, closely covered until loaves have doubled in bulk. Bake in an oven hot enough to brown one teaspoonful of flour placed on a piece of paper in five minutes.

If biscuit are to be baked, the oven should be hot enough to brown flour in two minutes. Let the bread bake from forty-five minutes to one hour. The first quarter of the time the bread should rise, but not form a crust; the second quarter the crust should form, the third the crust should become golden brown, the fourth should complete the baking.

Place the loaf to cool uncovered, and in such a position that the air can circulate freely around it, bottom and all.  Page 90.

Now do you think todays  children could bake bread from this recipe??? Not without, a lotta  mother, grandmother observations, huh?  just thought I'd share!

I have nothing but good to say re:  My  Mother.

She worked cleaning other peoples homes while us four were in school. when it came time to buy 'school' clothes, we made the trip to Sioux City to a popular store where she could charge clothes for the four of us. In the shoe dept. I found a pair of beige/brown sandals with a sling heel. Thinking they were the coolest shoes God made, when I asked for her to get them, it wasn't in the budget, nor common sense for school apparrel...paying no attention, I went to the shoe clerk, who charged them for me. Nothin was said til we arrived back home some sixty miles away...Guess shoppin with four under age 14 was  busy enuff.

It was an exciting adventure to travel so far, Mom learned to drive when I was 14, so when the well-traveled roads of two way truck/car traffic came...we were warned to lay down on the back seat of the 50 Chevrolet...esp. when an oncoming truck was  to pass us...her hands gripped white on the wheel. Such tricks one plays when young. Not understanding the value of a dollar til I was much older, was a lesson we shoulda learned sooner.

I have a friend whose Mom told him to iron his clothes, so he immediately put them under his mattress. In the morning they were creased where he needed them to be...his scolding came, cause of course, Mom figured out quite quickly, he never got the iron out. that takes the cake...woulda never thought to put my ironing under the mattress to 'flatten' it.

Hope you enjoy your mothers days remimeses'.......give her a hug too.

I have a friend who remembered that

written to share with you guys  from  the MOUNTAIN GAZETTE...i thought this story was cute!

"As a seasoned and single ski and mountain town woman (Summit and Steamboat/Durango and now Mancos}  I sure apppreciated the odd Goods feature in #140. It seems like Crabtree, Sperber and Vliet are all testimony that, in the end, we may need to be with 'own kind' With that in mind, I have a few of my own dos and don't to add. if I may:

the  writer goes on with her views:

"DON'T Do online dating [with the exception maybe of Mountain Honies.] No matter how dry the spell or desperate the day, don't do don't do it. The man you want to be with it isn't on eharmony, match.com, etc. Trust me.

DO:  Ski alone, on weekdays if possible. Even if you don't get a date, the call-outs do wonders for your confidence.

DO  Date younger guys. Just do it. they're everywheree, the hottie factor is high and they have less baggage, which subsequently leads to more maturity in the long run. About everything!

DON'T: Get fooled by the older guy who has relocated to create a new life, having learned all kinds of so-called lessons from past experiences, blah blah  blah...He hasn't especially if any of those experience include more than one-failed marriage, tax evasion, or delusions of artistic grandeur [or any grandeur, for that matter.]

DON"T   Waste time with a guy who says, in your first conversation about skiing, that he 'likes speed.' Not only is this a dumb thing to say; a guy who says it obviously can't really ski!

DO:  Date a guy who wants to watch your lines at least half of time [i.e. doesn't always go first down the hill.] If a guy can handle you being a better or equal skier, keep him!"

she says in Fresh Focus section of gazette  Cool, huh?"

so I admit  I have  been  visiting and engrossed with this other sight  at  tagged; so, that I haven't popped in on the news, such that it  is . . .  can always go to CNN  Channel 9  and BBC if I wish to catch the headline! also do the later in the day t.v.  online viewing with a live  chat.

Admittedly, I am worried what will become of my t.v. watching when the new network comes out, almost like communism, I am thinking as a child: at least, my perception of what was communistic, is to have the government sticking their nose into personal lives in our homes...

Then  asking myself, 'what will  we do if the government starts taking a strong action on what we do, who we can talk to, and if and when it [e-mail, postal mail, et blog sights] will be monitored!'  Will we be taken out to dry?  I used to imagine a t.v  lens hidden away watching what we do, as if we are doin anything wrong or private... by  the way  the listening devices put on phones, cell, and e-mail is no joking matter.

                   R  Idol  Calls  Costing you?

Even when I tried to call on my home Q-West line to the 866 number, I got an interrupt on the matter of go to a different line and it will cost you %5.95  to VOTE  for the IDOL  Y o u can  g u e s s   what  I  did....hung  up, so NO I didn't vote, and that means America will have one less correct vote for my candidate...I will not let an unknown source get rich overnight at these calls  30 million or so at say:   $5.95 per call/vote time 30 million callers...well, someones getting very rich off of this line.

so wuts up?

especially when it comes to breastfeeding.

such a dilema will likely make or break the length of time successfully breastfeeding.

Your show aired a comment on breaks for working MOMs  to breastfeed.   as compared  to 'smoke' breaks.....Bonding with baby and expensive formulas would dictate this is the correct but time-consuming, old-fashioned duty of  todays  busy MOMS..With disposable diapers, automatic washers and dryers,  speed of 'quick' meals, there is time to breastfeed. Men don't realize the pain of engorgement, and best have a bag of those frozen peas  ready. Babies on a regular feeding schedule would easily be able to feed every four hours, if ya got the right nanny.

Having successfully breastfed my last two babies, I can tell you personally, I woulda never been able to work eight hour job and be successful to breastfeed!   ...whether it be using a manual or electric breastpump to get me thru the workday....you loose the natural immunitys breastmilk is said to carry if you introduce two formulas to baby,  Even some babies have milk intolerance, their formula being really really expensive, making one think that breastfeeding woulda been the correct decision.

If you are so lucky as to have another person to 'bring' the baby to your workplace in order to bring in that second income, I am totally for it...Some places of employment state:  'we don't have to give you a break, and I have worked for some ten hour job in manufacturing that let  the line go down every two hours, so productivity is kept up, by drinking lottsa fluids, esp. in hot weather.

Only parents would understand that bottle babies are happy, too, but the bonding experience of breastfed babies cannot be denied...what of the babies right to breastfeed, especially, say if its the  'last'   baby  due to a    tube-tying or vasectomy decison ! You would like to enjoy the moment of having those diapering, feeding, playful times.

New Mom's are given the milk-stopping  pill now-a-days to STOP Mother natures' instinctive milk production for the new mom...then ya can really dry up.

..If you must be a parent- go with Mother Nature!  Its great for the uterus contracting back to normal' and will give you a glow, only other breastfeeding  Moms have  the knowledge of.  .      .

I heard the remark made of people encouraged to schedule their vasectomys'  during a  prime  time  t.v.  episode whereas, they may be able to  'sit'  while recooperating and enjoy the game.

A short remark was made to have the  [bag of ] FROZEN Peas  ready....and Shaul says spontaneously, "she'll forgo  pea  salads from now on."..To the persons not in the medical profession, or those who have never suffered a fractured rib, but nursed many a cut, some other inflammation of sorts, or some harsh blow to the knee, etc..

A frozen bag of peas simply serves as a manipulatable  ICE  PACK  to  REDUCE SWELLING..and relieve pain of such injuries...even an out-patent surgery such as this vasectomy!

I hope you find some humore in this Shaul. Peas  are the  home remedy!

preheat oven to 350-375 degrees . grease baking sheet.

In large bowl, stir 2  + 2/3 cups flour. Two tsp. cream of tarter, One tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. salt. and 1/4 tsp nutmeg...Set aside.

In another bowl: using elec mixer on medium speed beat  the  butter, sugar and corn syrup til well blended and fluffy:

                               Two  stix butter

One and three fourth cups white sugar

One   and a half tablespoon light corn syrup

                          **************************

Then         Add     Two   [2]   lrg.  eggs.

Two and a half tsp  vanilla

One and a half teaspoons pure vanilla

                                    mixing well agin.

Now  Mix in  half of the flour  you have set aside also mixing well...before stirring in the additional flour mix, or until just firmed up

Stir in remainder of flour...chill for a bit. Use two teaspoons one in each hand to scoop and portion out balls for rolling. This can be done at once.

In a shallow bowl filled with one fourth cups sugar, one and a half tsp. ground cinamon, mixed well  for the  'do   balls'   to be rolled before baking and placed on cookie sheet. It is a good idea to make all the balls, then do the rollin-on of sugar.  Some can be set aside to bake on a different day. i like to make up one pan so they're always fresh.

bake   Eight [8] to   [11] eleven minutes cool slighty before removing  or if you are able use the professional  paper for easy and quick removal.. the pp. sheets can be reused somewhat.  Saves washing on pans too.

                                   Enjoy.

yep i missed it! Sitting in my p.j.'s watchin Dan Duru advertising the Cricket event to be held this weekend, I decided to scoot down there 1/2 block away to get his autograph; however, the Fox van was wrapping up things and whizzed off.

I went to defend his statement of a lotta indigents seemed around? Well, you know the man that owns most of Oldtown had his walkway to some VIP offices above the Eagle Fountain. I wouldn't call that indigent... Starbucks is on the  west interesection where all the local parades  travel down College and Mountain.. Senator Salazar has stood on the very spot where he was standing....The local clothing store behind him has  on occasion 'live' models in their windows by the $500,000 renovated alley to College Ave. where the local CSU band occasionally marches up and down to that particular spot where they enthusiastically display their colors. In the alley behind The Northern many radio announcers park their vans and celebrate events at Mystic martinit place. The St. Patricks Day parade will be marching by soon. For Westfest, Octoberfest usually up to four bands and many food stands are displayed..to the north, south, east ,and west of where he stood!.So please tell Dan, he picked a particularly quiet morning. I guarantee it won't be quiet this weekend. Even the jews have shared in their dances and  celebrated in Oldtown.

Two   homeless missions    {open door & Catholic Charities] are close by and he may have mistaken some of the local bycyclers passing by [one of the popular modes of transportation here] that perhaps dressed   for  the  cold weather in hooded sweatshirts they were indigent?  - or residents of that mission. . . ? or just on their way to the local libray two blocks away...of course, this location also  is only a block away from the courthouse where the famous trial is choosing their impartial jury...a feat that may prove very lengthy.

Stores  and Restaurants in that area include a local brewery: Coopersmiths [quiet in the a.m.] A couple  jewelery stores, four or more stores with art displays and a block away five or  more of those same kinda art stores.  Our famous cinamon bar: The Silvergrill - very busy on weekends....Perhaps a good location  to advertise for those Cricket games to be held woulda been at the CSU  'oval' ; however, Fox News is widely viewed here and I did get a quick  [in person] glimpse of my famous interviewer...thou he left without me gettin an autograph! People to meet and places to go, I spose???

When is he gonna do Poudre High School pride? My graduated daughter is no longer there, but they gotta great dance team, with cheerleader squads, talented Tennis players, and Color Guard plus an outstanding music leader: Mr. C. If any one has attended  their concerts, the talent is unbelievable.and he is their Big Cheese.

Maybe I'll catch you next hour.

Never doubt the power of prayer and thanksgiving...for The U.S. of A. ....also thankful for any time that I would be able to spend with my grandchildren who are really really scattered.. ..all busy with their own lives. Sing with a grateful heart, God Bless America. And thanks to those defending it.
