On January 24th you backed into my private driveway and sat in your car with it running waiting for who knows what for at least 15 minutes, but I think it was closer to 20 minutes. I called the Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School to ask for help, but no one answered the phone... the message said they were closed, but the school was a buzz with activity everywhere. I then called the police and they took the complaint but were unable to come out as they would not arrive in time to do anything helpful. After talking with the supervising sergent for 30 minutes (and the offending vehicle left during that conversation) she was as baffled as I am at how to solve the problem as my neighbors and I have done just about everything under the sun that is legal to solve the problem with no success.

The school has made a few changes, such as waving people out of our driveways, and approaching cars telling them to move.. and today they started putting out orange cones to indicate the edges of the neighboring driveways so that their students parents don't impede our access to our driveways.

The safety commission gave us a crossing guard.

Mr. Posley of Administrative Accountability said weather permitting large functions will have parents parking on the playground (apparently there was still too much snow and as the school board has a policy against plowing playgrounds the parents parked on the street). He also said that during the large functions there would be a safety aide or staff member outside directing traffic to prevent parents from blocking driveways or parking in them like the driver of the vehicle 857 GHR  did tonight. That individual was not present in any way shape or form.

MPS is only making minimal efforts to work with the neighbors surrounding it's schools.

Video tape the incident and get the license plate in the video. Show it to the police, the school and post it somewhere (such as here or a myspace account). Hopefully the shame will stop the person from doing it again.

MPS - what do you expect? If there isn't enough room to park and let your kids off for school, that means this is a very hazardous place for kids. If laws are being violated, and it sounds like they are, definitely video tape. When people start to see you in your own yard with a camera, they may decide to park somewhere else. If not, at least you have a good shot at them and their license plate. Have you thought about blocking off your driveway while the parents are present? Orange cones, a temporary gate, those plastic posts with plastic chain come to mind. You can remove the barricades after the traffic clears. Another difficulty in Milwaukee - your space is my space and there is nothing you can do about it. Lack of respect and lack of recognition of boundaries. Aren't we glad MPS knows how to educate?

Silverfeather;
If you haven't already, keep calling your Alderman and have your neighbors do the same. Don't give up and don't let him or her blow you off. Remember...around here, the squeaky wheel ALWAYS gets the grease.
The video taping is also a very good suggestion as you can tape the entire area to support your argument and it can't be disputed by those who wish to blow you off.

Thanks! I will be taping in the near future...just trying to figure out the best way to set up the camera for the best views...

I have contacted tons of offices to try to get these issues resolved but like you said, they "blow you off".
I contacted the Mayor's office, Alderman Dudzik's office, the Superintendants office, Mr. Posley of Administrative Accountability for MPS, Danny Goldberg the school board representative for my area for MPS, the Milwaukee safety commission, Parking enforcement, and the 6th district police department just to name a few.

We also started a petition to change the signs in our block to help lessen the traffic.

Can you barracade your driveway? A couple of the orange cones at the base of your driveway?

According to the police no... However the school is allowed to... but to get them to is next to impossible.

They did put cones out on Jan. 24th but not until after most of the bad traffic had cleared and then it was partially to prevent people from blocking driveways later in the evening during their large event going on...

It prevented people from blocking them, but not from pulling in and idiling for 15 minutes.

Hi, I am a married mom of 6 going to college full time year round. I enjoy camping, carousels, and butterflies. I don't have nearly enough time for the things that I want to enjoy. I do find that while I don't get to blog often, I do have a few moments to read others and there have been a great many that I respect and have enjoyed and also learned from.
