DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co., which is closing plants and cutting jobs in an effort to improve results from its North American auto business, said yesterday that it will shutter assembly plants in Norfolk, Va., and St. Paul, Minn., in 2008. The two plants employ about 4,300 hourly and salaried workers.

''A decision to end production at a plant is not an easy one, and I'm deeply mindful of the impact this decision has on Ford employees, families, and communities," Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, said in a statement. ''Unfortunately, these are necessary steps we must take to move the business forward."

The nation's second-biggest automaker said in January that it would close 14 plants by 2012, but identified only five. It said at the time that it would name two more plants later in the year.

Ford said the staff reductions in Virginia and Minnesota are part of the 25,000 to 30,000 job cuts disclosed in January.

Ford's bigger rival, General Motors Corp., also is in the midst of a major restructuring and plans to close 12 plants by 2008.

Now the world's largest automaker by sales needs to figure out how it can sell enough cars to make money in a shrinking U.S. market and stay ahead of the bill collectors.

The automaker said it would idle pickup and SUV factories in Janesville, Wis.; Oshawa, Ontario; Moraine, Ohio; and Toluca, Mexico, as it tries to deal with a shift to smaller vehicles brought on by $4 per gallon gasoline. GM also took aim at the Hummer, one off the largest vehicles on U.S. highways, saying it would either be sold or get a remake.

The move cuts about 2,900 jobs in Oshawa, about 2,800 in Janesville, about 2,400 in Moraine and about 250 in Toluca, said GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson.

GM said the truck plant cuts, which will reduce capacity to produce pickups and large SUVs by about 35 percent, will save the company $1 billion per year, and when combined with earlier measures, by 2011 will save $15 billion over 2005 costs.

GM's moves, which come after a series of restructuring measures since 2005, are the result of a huge shift in U.S. consumer preferences for small cars and crossovers during the past two months.

"We at GM don't think this is a spike or temporary shift," Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said. "We believe that it is, by and large, permanent."

The automaker now will have to parlay its strong overseas sales and the lower North American costs into a profit by selling cars in the $15,000 to $20,000 range, half the price of its high-profit SUVs and pickup trucks.

Hybrid car sales jump 38% in U.S.

U.S. registrations of new hybrid vehicles rose to record levels last year, with Los Angeles being a major market for hybrids.

Sales were up 38 percent in 2007 to more than 350,000 vehicles, but that number translates to only 2.2 percent of all sales, according to R.L. Polk & Co.

Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City were the top three metro markets for hybrid cars last year. The Washington, D.C., area came in fourth, with 12,744 hybrid cars registered in the region.

The Toyota Prius remained the best-selling hybrid in 2007, according to R.L. Polk & Co., commanding 51 percent of the market. That's up from 43 percent in 2006 and in spite of an influx of new hybrid models.

California remained the top state for hybrid sales in 2007. Twenty-six percent of all hybrid registrations were in California. Florida, New York, Texas and Washington state followed.

More info on the prius,

Dramatic Design, Midsize Roominess and Outstanding Utility
The Prius rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase that allows generous interior room and a smooth ride. The five-door liftback design not only looks like nothing else on the road, it is also one of the most aerodynamic production vehicles in America. Its super-low 0.26 coefficient of drag (Cd) helps to minimize interior noise and enhance fuel mileage.

With its "monoform" design, the Prius provides 96.2 cubic feet of passenger room, making it a midsize car. The rear seat in Prius provides a generous 38.6 inches of legroom. Rear cargo room measures 14.4 cubic feet. The liftback design, combined with the standard 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks, gives the Prius outstanding cargo capacity and flexibility.

I guess nows the time to buy that hummer or large pick up, raise it off the floor in storage and keep it as a collectors item. ;o)

Improving customer service, quality, and building more affordable fuel efficient cars are factors that have driven the sales of foreign car makers that are now making cars in the U.S. It makes you wonder why the American car makers didn't understand these important factors. Or if they did, why didn't they really do something about them.

Toyota and other Japanese auto makers are reportedly going to "return" to Japan, building more plants, etc. within Japan with less emphasis on manufacturing abroad, while American auto makers such as Ford continue to build plants in Mexico and elsewhere.

The big three have been selling a majority of vehicles oversea's.. Its obvious the US manufacturers dont care, they sell a car that is less reliable but is made in Amerika. Where I can buy basicly the same car thats foriegn for less and its more reliable in the end.

Hmmm it doesnt take a rocket scientist to deduct that consumers are going to go for the cheapest price..

I guess I could go out and buy a new Surburban, & have it painted Olive Drab Green with a clearcoat. Outfit it with military style black-out lights, paint Urban Assault Vehicle on the rear side windows and keep it around for the return to MAD MAX days.... ;o)

Oryguncb: My mom bought her intrepid new, I bought my mazda new. Her intrepid has had alot more repairs despite being 7 years newer.

Want to read about our american automakers:

The Chrysler 300C®, Dodge Magnum®, and Dodge Charger® all share the same platform, and because of demand, DaimlerChrysler added a third shift at the assembly plant where the 300C is built. The 300C is a great example of the enduring success of the American sedan. Along with its popular HEMI® engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, the 300C is evidence that Detroit can design an original sedan that strikes a chord with buyers.

There's just one problem: This all-star is not quite as American as you may think. First off, it's built at DaimlerChrysler's Bramalea assembly facility in Ontario, Canada. Its famous HEMI engine is shipped from Mexico. The transmission is built in Kokomo, Ind., but is largely based on a Mercedes design from Germany. The same is true of the suspension and handling components, many of which are based on German designs. Approximately 20 percent of the car's design is German in origin. Add to that the Canadian assembly and Mexican engine and you have a real citizen of the world.

Other examples abound. Take, for instance, the Ford Fusion® I recently purchased. The vehicle is based on the CD1 platform, which was designed largely by Ford of Europe and by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan. The Mazda6®, built in Flat Rock, Mich., shares the platform, as does the European Ford Mondeo®. The car and engine are built in Mexico, but the engine was engineered in the U.S. and is largely based

on a Mazda design. The transmission is a Mazda design built in Japan and shipped to Mexico. Put this all together, ship it to a Polish guy living in Michigan, and you have another global jumble.

And the list goes on. The Dodge Caliber® that recently went into production at Chrysler's Belvidere, Ill., assembly plant is based on the Mitsubishi Lancer® platform. It uses an engine made at the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance facility in Dundee, Mich., which is a joint venture among DaimlerChrysler, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai. The Chrysler Sebring® and Dodge Avenger®, which will go into production this year at the Sterling Heights, Mich., assembly plant, are based on a larger version of the same Mitsubishi platform.

GM plans to import Opel Astra®s, most likely made in Belgium, to sell as Saturns. It will also use its European divisions to assist with the design of front-wheel-drive cars, while its Australian Holden division will assist in the design of the upcoming Zeta rear-wheel-drive platform.

Ford is expected to turn to its Australian arm to design the next generation of the Crown Victoria®. Its Five Hundred® sedan and Freestyle® CUV are based on a Volvo platform. The examples are too numerous to list.

SushiLover: funny you say that the about mad max ford in OZ still is manufacturing the falcon. The ranchero version isn't to bad either with it's 350 HP boss 290. They don't actually call it a ranchero anymore and I forget what it's called, but it's the same thing built off a Falcon platform

well Guess what sushi I get about 18 MPG and I fit in mine...when I sit in a tundra I look like I'm driving a go-cart, knees on either side of the steering wheel. they may be full size for the japanese...not me. I fit in the tacoma and tundra the same way, same drivers space...more space in the back, so maybe I'll try driving it from the back seat next time.
Dks...tell your mom to get rid of the intrepid as fast as possible it is the biggest lemon built since the gremlin or pinto. wife had one, 7 motors, 3 transmissions, 15 cv joints later we finally sent it to the junk yard, but you cant blame the Americans for that just Lee Iacocca...the whole drive train was made by mebitesushi..oops mitsubishi. but as for the quality of the japanese stuff, since most everything the japanese, chinese, make are based on stolen patents, I'll stick to the originators. If You dont believe me look at their motorcycle makers, most of the real bikes now are based on either Harley, or Indian design from the V-twin, to the sound, to the look...hell there is even a kawasaki that is a direct rip-off of the Indian Chief, and even has the Indian light on the front fender.
