Germany finished paying off  World War II reconstruction loans in 1971.   Additionally Germany and its industries were largely dismantled  and taken over by the allies.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_plans_for_Germ
any).

Should Iraq be forced to pay back the money that has been spent by the U.S. for the reconstruction of their country?

How about their industries, including, but not limited to the oil industry............ should the U.S. take over those industries and at least share in their profits until all of the reconstruction and occupation costs have been repaid?

There are a couple very key points I'd expect most Americans to miss.. Germany was a cold war proxy country, we dumped tons of money into post WWII Germany. Plus with November 11th just passing and a lack of knowledge of what the day really is.. A lot of Germans felt like they were humiliated and couldn't repay the war so they supported the crazed lunatic that lead to a second WW...

I don't understand why we cant just give people freedom with no strings attached in this day and age.

dks75, the difference in reparations and exploitation were discussed in article/site referenced above.

Freedom is a very relative word that has cultural implications or connections. Of course the question arises about whether or not it is our business to "free" people in other parts of the world. As we can see with Iraq, the cultures there may end up returning Iraq to the same type of leadership/government that it previously had.

I very highly recommend a book called "The Post-American World" by Fareed Zakaria, who also authored "The Future of Freedom." It provides a glimpse of what has been happening in the world for the last century or so, and the attitudes of the rest of the world regarding governmental forms, economics, etc.

The emphasis on using military force or threats for achieving economic or other types of goals is something of the past. That is one of the reasons that the U.S. has lost so much standing in the world. Our standard of living has been diminishing while those of other countries such as China and India have been increasing for the past thirty years.

Good point Roger. Please read the Wiki article at the site above. Notice that it also talks about reparations and the dismantling and exploitation of Germany.

At one point the Allies were forcing Germany to sell them coal for about half of what it cost to produce. The Germans were desperate for food. The costs of the occupations were not a loan. They were amounts charged to the Germans by the allies.

I would suggest that we should have stipulated at the beginning that reconstruction costs for Iraq would be a loan to be paid back. Unfortunately, the American people were sold a bill of goods about how the oil revenues of Iraq would pay most of the costs.

BTW, did anyone ever document what happened to Iraq's money when we defeated them? Did Saddam spend it all before we got there? I believe that he had a great deal of American currency and gold.

That's exactly what Cheney's Halliburton and Prince's Blackwater were and are there for. IMHO Thank You For Your Indulgence

Halliburton? Used almost exclusively by the Clinton administration btw....

How about the MILLIONS in MILCON projects that California Senator awarded to her husband's companies as no bid contracts? Maybe jeokar, you might want to look at how much money Fienstein made over the years...

Blackwater: Doing the work that the military isn't allowed to do, and can't do because of the Clinton era socialization and diversity quotas? Ridiculous rules of engagement that only Americans follow and not the enemy?

Thank GOD! we have groups like Blackwater, CACI, and a host of others to do the work that politicians don't like....

If only we could ask the over 3000 folks that died on 9/11 if they think Halliburton and Blackwater are a bad thing....

As to paying for war: Well shadows, maybe we should pull back all the Global Poverty Bill funding that accounts for hundreds of BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars that actually is being directed at African dictators and warlords that are starving their own people. Maybe we should send a bill from Clinton's days to Bosnia then? Oh no wait! All those nations did pay America back...in donations to the Clinton Library where the donor list is still hidding.. (unless Sandy Berger got a hold of it already and replaced it with a different list.)

Always find it interesting that issues like this are framed ONLY in a republican administration's history as if it was something different than a Democrat one.

Abunai have you lost your way again? Your wandering from topic to topic to try and make an obviously partisan point seems to indicate that you are again lost (for words). The Global Poverty Bill funding and/or Bosnia are not what this blog is about, however worthy of discussion they may be. Perhaps you should write a blog about them.

In case you haven't noticed, for the past almost eight years the administration has been Republican and this administration is the one that decided to attack Iraq. That is why they are being included in the discussion.

Please don't interpret my replies to you as being condescending or partisan in nature. I am actually quite pleased to be able to provide you with assistance during your "journey." Where is TM?

BTW, you might want to go back and read the blog.

Borntobewild, you never know when something will "catch on." If more people would get involved even though the election is over, perhaps things like this could change a little bit. Now is the time while other significant catalysts for change have been enabled.

People can't sit back and allow this idealistic new President to become a victim just like most of the others. The lobbyists and others are not waiting to move-in and work their magic behind closed doors. As many have said, it is difficult to stay honest in Washington.

"People can't sit back and allow this idealistic new President to become a victim just like most of the others", I guess you ADMITTING that President Bush has been backstabbed and that congress are the stabbers, the crook reid's son is the NUMBER ONE lobbyist in congress and communist senator dodd is the main instigator and pusher of lobbyist specially UNION LOBBYSTS.
To YOUR POINT OF PAYBACK from WW-II Russia owes the US 235 million dollars in reconstruction and 110 MILLION and this are in 1943-5 dollars in equipment, NEVER PAID BACK, they were sales and WRITEN LOANS, as to Iraq the US has committed $45 Billions in its reconstruction, Iraq has had oil revenues of about 100 Billions in oil revenues from 2007/08 Ambassador Crocker was the first one that demanded accountability to make sure IRAQ PAID BACK ITS DUES, this followed an accounting from General Petraeus staff the Pentagon for the report, the new waste of the elected clown now has to set up with his lackeys follower the payback timetable.
Fareed Zakaria if you HAVE READ it which I doubted, and I HAVE NOT but know about him is a Indian born Newsweek journalist that does not know what he is, he can decide if he likes democracy or not, I recommend you do READ if you can "Fareed Zakaria, Spokesperson for the Global Elite" by Roger I believe Bybee of the Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting Organization, this as a good liberal you wont as it is about FAIR AND ACURATE reporting, two word that liberal don't learn in school, enjoy.

A little touchy aren't we AirforceEd? Notice the word "most" in the statements about the Presidents. But yes, I do feel that Bush was a victim of others as well as of his upbringing. Not to mention that more of the American people should have gotten involved rather than leaving everything to the professional politicians and lobbyists. It is unfortunate that GW will probably go down in history as one of the worst presidents as a result.

Thanks for your book recommendation. I do not rely on a particular author's perspective. I look at the footnotes and sources as well as going to the actual cited sources for verification. That approach usually pays greater dividends than to simply select authors who seem to agree with my own views and/or biases.

Zakaria has documented most of his facts that provide a basis for his assertions. I have heard of people disagreeing with him, however, I have never seen him discredited by any reputable person or with any verifiable data.

Your obvious partisanship and bitterness regarding the election results make it difficult to understand the relevance of some of your statements. BTW, the former USSR went broke in much the same manner that we are.....over extended.

Oh yes I am fully "partisan", Russia did not go "Over extended" as you say, point I not going to argue more or less, you need to "study it", Russia "EMPTY" the coffers of their satellite countries, they went bankrupt in 1966 when they started to try to out produce and out do the United States and United Kindom on weapons and the Space program
in 1975 then president Nixon "authorize" NASA to provide the link up system for Soyuz/Apollo at our cost because they could not afford it.
We on the other hand are going broke thanks to Democrats thief who have used intimidation to get their way, as to you "selecting any author", please just tell your self that looking at the mirror, only person who would believe you, and I already stated the FACT that liberals are not taught two important words FAIR AND ACURATE reporting.

AirForceEd, I can understand your frustration having been labeled a loser after the election as a result of your political affiliation. However, you really must try to get a grip and get over it........try to rebuild your self-esteem in some positive way.

In case you forgot or overlooked it, the title of this blog is "A Source of Money?" and it refers to Iraq possibly being a source of money for the U.S.

As to my choice of authors, I told you what I do to verify information that I read in any place regardless of author. It is called documentation and the verification of documentation is the process for determining the degrees of reliability and validity.

Obviously you have never engaged in research other than listening to FoxNews or looking something up in an encyclopedia or google, so these terms and processes probably sound a bit foreign to you. Historical research also utilizes those terms in addition to classifications of sources such as primary or secondary sources.

It is almost admirable that you are able to memorize and parrot such catchy little phrases as "...that liberals are not taught two important words FAIR AND ACURATE reporting." A sign of a true intellectual...

BTW, "FAIR AND ACURATE" is not only spelled wrong, but it is three words, not two......another sign of a real intellectual...LOL

WRONG!!! Bush's budget plan not until 2002 supported by a GOP Congress. 2006 election ended that, and Republican budgets ceased on year end 2007.

It was CONGRESS that voted to go into Iraq shadows. They even demanded to have debate on it TWICE! (once before the UN vote, and then once more during the 2002 election cycle) Bush EXECUTED the authorization from CONGRESS.

shadows. if you are going to bust my balls for being off topic then I suggest you do that across the board as I was responding to anoher liberal here who took off topic stabs.

Bush of course gets ugly reviews now, just as the greatest President in recent history did as well on his way out... Reagan. The liberal brats had him hated as well, tried to take him down with Iran Contra. History always shows liberals forgetting their own infractions and trying to take down republican administrations. Just mad that they had to wear Clinton's disgrace on their shoulders...

Poor Abunai, running out of material? You realize that as Commander-in-Chief Bush and his boys went to Congress. Congress did not go to Bush and say how about attacking Iraq. The Congress believed that the President and his boys had adequately done their homework and they believed them........a mistake to be sure.

Are you feeling picked on after you said "Halliburton? Used almost exclusively by the Clinton administration..." Where did anyone raise Clinton's name prior to you doing so to make a partisan point? Sorry, you seem to be a little paranoid today.....we all have our good days and bad days.....don't worry it will pass.

BTW, not everyone thinks that Reagan was the "greatest President in recent history." I think that he was the right person at the right time. However, upon closer examination of his actions, he left some things to be desired. For example, his hasty and blanket firing of all air traffic controllers has been viewed by many as a big mistake. It was an example of government getting involved in private enterprise instead of leaving negotiations to the parties involved. It didn't help either the airlines or our traffic safety system in the long run. One thing that I liked about Reagan over GW, is that Reagan was better educated and could pronounce the word "nuclear."
