The Republican former Secretary of State and Army General Colin Powell has formally endorsed Obama.

Fox News immediately got busy trying to "spin"  the endorsement as lacking any substance.

Many Republicans have previously stated that they would have voted for Colin Powell if he had ran for President.  So his judgment is obviously respected.

Will his endorsement  help the Obama campaign?

Has he suddenly fallen from "grace" among Republicans as a result of his failure to place party above country?

I couldn't comment on Powell's endorsement or FOX's spin since I've seen neither. I respect Powell's intellegence and service in this countries armed forces. But I wouldn't vote for him and this is my reason: Right before the pictures of that totally destroyed Iraqi column of Guards leaving Kuwait City started making the rounds, he advised Bush to end it before the job was finished. He was conscerned about world opinion, and I believe it plays a large part in us being their now. On a small side note, I've seen some very good personal pictures of that convoy. The American Army's Self- Propelled crews are awesome !

shadows, since you mentioned it elsewhere, did you take the test to check you're spin ?

Meb452, trying as hard as I can to understand you, I don't understand what you mean by asking "...did you take the test to check you're spin ?

I am assuming that the word "you're is a contraction for the words "you are." But even so, it doesn't make sense to me. Even if I assume that you meant the word "your," I still don't understand your reference to a test.

What test? Could it be an entrance type exam that FoxNews gives to job applicants?

Whatever happens in a combat zone should not be second guessed by politicians or citizenry. I believe like you do about skilled tradesmen, that military commanders are skilled in their profession. The ridiculous procedures and "rules" that I witnessed in Vietnam were enough to turn anyone against politicians and civilians who dare meddle in war.

I would never have voted for Powell anyway. His endoresement merely confirms that to Powell, race is more important than service to country.

Mr. Asphalt, yes even though Gen Powell kept mentioning that he was a long time friend and that he respected his service, he did state that Palin is not prepared to be President while Biden is.

He seemed to emphasize the steadiness and thoughtfulness of Obama, and was critical of the attacks rather than substantive information from the McCain camp.

I'm amazed at how many people "would have voted for him," but yet now seem not to respect his endorsement......amazing!! They were willing to make him the President, but they don't respect his judgment.......can't figure that one out.

mscsailor, I guess that you also mean that any white guy that endorses McCain is also putting race ahead of his country.

According to your logic in place, in order for the country to stay ahead of race, all white people should vote for Obama, and all people of color should vote for McCain.....that makes sense doesn't it? LOL

I watched Powell on Meet the Press. He wasn’t convincing as to why. He over-explained/justified as if he knew his reasons weren’t robust ( “rhetorical ability”? [speech designed to persuade – used car salesmen] . . . “he inspires”? . . . nothing substantial). He was uncharacteristically nervous when trying to sell them, ESP. regarding Military concerns – he admitted to disagree firmly with Obama’s troop withdrawal date-setting. When Brokaw asked if he thought Obama would handle Iran properly, Powell (who is wise enough to understand that you don’t send your President running scared to meet Insane Dictators when provoked with THREATS and NUKE Operations) avoided that too by saying Pakistan is just as worrisome.

He knows he cannot sell Obama w.r.t. the Military because he wouldn’t be able to support it. What COULD he say? Rough days in Hawaii prepared him? All his party-guided votes in 2 years of Congress prepared him? His well-demonstrated indecision (countless “PRESENT” votes) is a good characteristic for Military Decisions in a Time of War (and gives the soldiers confidence)? THIS is Powell’s area of expertise . . . so what value is his endorsement?

Clearly there’s an unspoken reason behind the sales pitch (made obvious by indirect comments – “Historical”, etc. . . . so is Palin). He should just say it - DIRECTLY. It’s not so bad. To support a Self-Identified “black” candidate. But he shouldn’t try to sell Obama’s preparedness to be President when HE doesn’t even believe it; and shows it.

Boy...gman & mscsailor, mMeb452m, I'll bet all you Right-To-Life, Heroic-Interventionist for Premies (Those your God thought fit to born too soon, and normally die), and Closet Racists would have surely prayed for Obama's Mom to have had an Abortion should you have of known Barack's bid for the Presidency...White Man Speaking. IMHO Thank You For Your Indulgence

gman, You said that he "wasn't convincing" and then you say that "he over-explained," and then you accused him of "trying to persuade-used car salesman."

Let me get this right, "he wasn't convincing,"..... but yet you didn't want him to try to "persuade" you, and you didn't want him to explain his "reasoning" as much as he did?

To put it charitably, you sound a bit confused.

Also, as a former military person who was on the ground, but had several pilots as friends, I can tell you that most of them didn't have a clue about the activities of troops on the ground.

In addition to your apparent confusion and misguided assumptions you also chose to interject the topic of race when it was unnecessary, so I would imagine that you also have some racism issues to also deal with. Too bad that your intellectual growth has been suppressed.....but there is hope if you start working on it.....soon.

General Powell.. the absolute definition of affirmative action!! Made it to General status because of AA. I remember having to wait MONTHS in the sand during Desert Shield, because the army with guys like Powell who always reported about being ready, once time to execute that readiness, couldn't do it!!

Just as Clinton's Defense dept. reported a Defense Dept. that looked great on paper from a careerist General's paperwork, when it came time to actually execute it,oops! Ummm.. we seem to have some problems.

Powell is and always has been a RINO!! He held out on his endorcement because he was a consultant for BOTH sides!! Not until he was literally forced to decide again did his true colors come out!

SHADOWS: WOW you REALLY are an idiot – by your own words.

I didn’t accuse Colin Powell of < "trying to persuade-used car salesman." >

Here’s what I said about Colin Powell as you can see just above:
“ . . . his reasons weren’t robust ( “rhetorical ability”? [speech designed to persuade – used car salesmen] . . . “he inspires”? . . . nothing substantial).

R E A D I T A G A I N S L O W L Y. Apparently you don’t know what “rhetorical ability” means ? ? ?, which is what COLIN POWELL said about OBAMA . . . NOT what I said about ANYONE.

If you SHADOWS
“. . . would imagine that [ I ] also have some racism issues to also deal with”
simply because I commented on COLIN POWELL’s reference to RACE as a reason for choosing Obama, then you’re RIGHT! You’re IMAGINING it.

Boy, I must have REALLY hit the mark for you to be so anxious to try to disqualify my statements that you:
A) didn’t even take the time to read them or to THINK
B) IMAGINED racism, then RUSHED to use THAT instead of a valid counter-point,
AND
C) realizing you HAVE no counter-points, resorted to personal attacks out of frustration

You need to respect others’ rights to express their opinions. If you have valid counter-points, fine. But don’t get bent-out-of-shape just because someone makes a good point you don’t like. (It’s a sign of mental weakness and immaturity.)

Are ya'll for real...Just last week there was a few blogs on Gen.Powell....What a great american he is....There wasn't one mention of his BLACKNESS.....Then now he's for obama only because he's a BLACK MAN......Maybe Gen.Powell is against McLame for a reason....What about the way the G.O.P. tried to leave him holding the bag with iraq........I'm glad he went against the RED NECK PARTY aka The G.O.P.......

gman, I used your words with quotation marks in-case your memory wasn't working. Now you are dancing around trying to explain them.......well, the jig is up!!

You have exposed yourself with very little help from anyone!! And now you are resorting to name calling to vent your frustration.....frustration leads to anger and anger leads to frustration and frustration leads to anger......get the picture?

Abunai, I never heard you criticize General Powell for his military actions before he endorsed Obama.

Keep in mind that he stated that he remains a Republican, but that he puts his country first with this endorsement.

BTW, your racist tendencies are also showing through with your comment about "his true colors." You didn't perhaps notice what "color" he is did you?

As Palin would probably say "squirm baby, squirm!!" LOL
