I think everyone has an opinion on who wore the mask best. So my question is, who do you think was the greatest Batman? I also want to know who are you hoping to see as the main villain in the next Batman film? Incase your have forgotten some of candidates credentials here they are.

Adam West

He played the role of Batman for 3 seasons from 65-68 with one film to its credit. He also reprised his role later in many different Batman animated series known as “the new adventures of Batman”, “super friends”, “the legendary super power show”, “the super power team”, and “galactic guardians”  and even co-starred in a film brick called “batman: new times” with mark hamil who played the joker in the 92 animated series. He had a cameo appearance in a 92 episode of “Batman the animated series” on Fox, but not as Batman. Instead, West voiced the part of Simon Trent, a washed-up actor who used to play a superhero in a TV series called "The Grey Ghost". He is typecast as the Gray Ghost and has difficulty finding work. I believe that West, even though he gave Batman  a campy feel to the character, it was not a far departure of what was going on in the comic books at the time. He also showed Batman as more of a thinker, a true decective that relies on his brain and not so much on his brute force or gadgets, but when he did need to rough up a villian he had no problem giving them a punch that followed with a POW!” or  a “Zonk”.

Micheal Keaton

He only starred in 2 films as Batman, “Batman” and “Batman Returns”,but that was all that needed to bring the cape hero back to rememberance, and to change the comic book world forever. The success of the 2 films spawned many more comic book movies like spiderman, iron man, x-men, dare devil, hellboy, and even the return of superman. Not only that but it spawned off a cartoon serires as well.

Many didn’t like the idea of Keaton taking up the role as Batman. They felt that he was too much of a comdian to be able to take the work seriously, but he changed everyone’s mind after the movie hit the theaters after it became the biggest blockbuster ever.  Personally from all the men that starred in the live movies, his potrayal was the best in my opinion. He envoked the dark brooding side of Batman, and gave Bruce Wayne a suave, yet uncomfortable corky side to him. 2 complete different personalities. He also didn’t say much as Batman, which is the way I picture him to be in real life. so Keaton believed in less is more. And I felt it was the right choice when acting as Batman.

Val Kilmer

Warner Bros. felt that “Batman Returns” was not as big as a hit as it could have been due to it’s dark overtones, so they wanted to revamp the series with a new director. Joel took over Burtons duties and began making his kid friendly version of Batman. Due to the change of tone and Burton being replaced, Keaton did not come back to star in “Batman Forever”. Instead Val took over. From all the actors that protrayed the Batman, Bob Kane felt that Val did the best job, but he died before being able to see Christians Bale’s perfromance. “Batman Forever” was a blockbuster hit, and the studio was pleased along with fans, especially the women who felt that Batman was the best looking one in the suit.  Unfortunatly this would be short lived. Val refused to come back as Batman due to what he saids “Batman was being marginalized in favor of the villains”. Val went on to do ”The Saint”. He also went on to say “he liked the characterization of Simon Templar better than Bruce Wayne.Simon is a literary character who uses his wit, and not violence. Batman is a real screwed-up guy who has hustled an entire city, and now he's running around in a cape. What's it all about?" Personally I felt he did a carbon copy of what Keaton did in the original films except that his potrayal as Batman and Bruce were almost the same instead of being to different identities.

George Clooney

Known to be one of the most popular actors, he took over the duty of playing Batman. Due to the horrible script, over use of puns, embarrassing costumes, and lack of direction the movie did poorly. Even though it was not a total financial lost, the studio felt it should have been a bigger blockbuster movie due to its budget.  George Clooney was embarrassed of his performance. He even went on to say that “I think we might have killed the franchise”.  He felt so bad that if he ever met a fan that watched that movie in the theater and still had the ticket stub, he would give that fan a refund. He also claimed to play the part of Batman gay to be able to identify to the character. Since this movie came out all plans to release any further movies has been stopped. I don’t have to say much about his performance, I think George said it all for me.

Christian Bale

An actor that been around the block for a while but wasn’t notice until he put the cape and cowl on was the man to revamp the Batman franchise. He originally was up for the role as Robin in “Batman Forever”. Bale performance brought back the role to its dark roots, and added to the role a much more real world gritty aspect to it, instead of Burton’s fantasy like world. Personally, I really love his acting as Bruce, but I don’t find his acting as Batman as menacing as Keaton. I think he pushes too hard to be dark instead of just letting it be as with Keaton. I also felt the costume (mostly the cowl doesn’t look right.) but that’s not Bale’s fault. Personally I enjoy his performance 2nd to Keatons, but that’s just my opinion.

Kevin Conroy/ Will Friedle

Conroy has played Batman for 15 years in the animated series, and has played Batman at different stages in his life. from a teenager learning his trades, to his first night out as the dark knight, to his early 30’s, and then as a old man unable to fulfill the duties as Batman due to his age, but still with the desire to do what he can with his mind. “Batman the animated series” was green lit in 92 after the success of the first 2 Batman films. It was produced, directed and written by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Allen Burnett, and Eric Radomski. The show lasted until 95. With it came 2 animated films known as “Mask of the Phantasm” and “Sub-Zero”. In the original series the show was inspired by the world Burton created, and builds upon those ideas. In the end they created a new art form known as dark deco by drawing all the scenes on black paper, and creating a world with future tech in a 40’s era environment. It was one of first cartoons to be made with more adult content, display firearms, and to have a prime time slot on a network. It only took the first episode “On Leather Wings” for the studio to be convinced that such risks would work.

In the forth season of Batman, it was revamp to have a similar look to its spin off show “Superman”. It was also the final season of the Batman series due to the producers struggling to be able to create episodes for “superman”, “static shock” and the new “batman beyond” TV series. “Mystery of the Batwomen” was the last chapter of the new adventure saga.

Batman Beyond is the last chapter of the “Timm/ Dini universe saga”. The first episode showed why Batman retired from crime fighting. It also showed why he made his comeback as a mentor to the new batman that will be acted by Will Friedle. Will did an amazing job in creating his own distinct style of what Batman should be. He played it as a teenager with a chip on his shoulder, but with the understanding that sacrifices with have to be made and to look beyond his own happiness to fulfill the greater good.

Like the original show, it was another success, and even though the creators tried to make it more of a lighter show, it ended up becoming just as dark if not darker then the original series due to its stories. It also spawned its own direct to DVD movie “Return of the Joker” which is the first animated film to receive a pg 13 rating due its violence. All I have to say is that it’s a def. must watch. It’s twisted on what the joker does to robin.

After “Batman Beyond” series was over Justice League was created only to be followed up with Justice League Unlimited which tied all the loose ends to all the Batman series, Superman series and Batman Beyond series as it had Batman team up with Superman, Wonder Women, The Flash, Martian Man hunter, and The Green Lantern plus the rest of the D.C. comic heroes together.

The last work that Conroy has done has been the new “Gotham Knights” DVD that was released 1 week before the new “The Dark Knight” film was released. It’s was created by 6 different directors, 6 different stories, 6 different interpretation of Batman all voiced by Conroy. It is more or less a prequel to “The Dark Knight”, but well able to stand on its own.  Personally for me, Kevin will always be the man I think of as Batman due to his bulk of work, true understanding of the character, and the brilliance that he brings to the character in all aspects. He took all the good points from all the other actors and rolled it in to one, and made it his own. Even critics has praised Conroy’s work and claim that he has done a superior job being Batman then most who have worn the cowl.  I know everyone will have a different opinion, and that’s fine, I’m eager to know your thoughts.

-K-, Well that was quite the review I must say. And man you, with all your batman memories! I'm impressed, I knew I would be. I have yet to see the movie, but here are a few things I have to say on the older movies:

Adam West will always be the POW, BANG, BOOM!! Batman to me. I watched him as Batman as a kid. Would watch the reruns if they were still on too. so he's my favorite Childlike batman.

I belive that Keaton is by far my favorite. I love him and Jack as the Joker together. A good pair. I really loved the 2nd one with him, w/ Pfeiffer as cat woman (i think she did a great job) and Devito as the penguin. Devito was great in his role. He creeped me out. Still does when I see the movie on TV. with his waddel. I'd have to say this on (2nd Keaton) is my favorite out of all of them.

I am a big fan of Val Kilmer, I think hes a great actor, but this role was not for him. The script was a bit cheesy.

George was good but I didn't like the villans in this one. and Odonnel as the trapise or tight walking boy. ahh didn't like it. And lets not forget his great line "holie rusted metal Batman" "the metal its rusted and has holes in it" It is such a cheesy line that I still use it to this day. I'm not even going to touch the one W/ Alicia Silverstone. bad, bad, bad.

yup i own it. it was good. i felt it didnt push it all the way it could have. i felt the suspense wasn't at it's peak. the movie should have been longer, should of spread the scene where the vampires are looking for them in the house, and in general store a bit more. it also needed more blood. other then that it was good. i give it a b-.

I agree, pretty much. I thought the house scene was way too short. especially with that Paul Bunin of a man cluncking around in the attach. and they didn't see the light comming out of the holes when they looked through the windows? huh. The very end fight scene was pretty short too. although the fist through the head was good. I love vamire movies and I don't think this was the best. but I'd watch it again. The scariest thing about it was when they made that sound, the first time it gave me chills. But I've been watching scary movies since I was 2. Night of the living dead, eating beans out of a can w/ my dad. My mom was pissed! So I don't get scared that easy.

thanks again for the review!

well here are some more recent horror films that i watched and might help ya to advoid or to watch if you haven't already.

halloween (remake)- good movie, but reminds me too much of devil rejects due to the writing. i didnt think it was scary, but a good movie in general

the mist- i think it's one of the scariest films that i saw in a while. i watched it by myself around 2 in the morning, never seen it before, but had a feeling it would be good, and it was great. def. must see.

rest stop- crappy movie, dont waste your time or money unless you want to scream at the tv and be pissed. the girl in the film is as dumb as a shoe. at the end it makes you want her to die.

day of the dead (remake)- nothing like the original one, also one of the plot points in the film is pretty far fetched, but it is a good action horror movie if you can accept those 2 flaws.

i'll agree with ya, the classics were much more scary, and i think they are because of 2 things. one is the film. it looks old, and grainy, and many of the scenes are pitch black that you cant see anything. while new films are glossy and new, and you can totally see everything when it would be scarier not being able to see everything. plus too much cgi not enough pratical effects anymore. children of the corn was as scary as f**k because it had freaky looking kids in it killing people as to oppose fake looking monsters like in "i am legend". but 28 weeks/days later was cool. and that's all done by real actors acting like freaks.

Children of the corn....Dude.....I haven't thought about that movie in so long. And just reading the name freaked me out. That movie scared the crap out of me! I was thinking about renting Shutter or The Orphanage. Have you seen those? Gothica creeped me out and The Village of the Damned did too. Pet Cemetary the first two (especially the first) was good. I think your right about the film quality has a bit to do with it. I coudn't bring myself to rent I am Ledgend. I've never heard of 28 weeks later, whos in it?

i never watch movies with famous stars in them. 1) you know they never die in the film, 2) because you know they aren't gonna die, that takes the whole suspense out of the film. yes their are some big movies that had famous people stars in them, but at the time they were unknown actors. jamie lee curtis first movie was halloween. one of linda hamilton first movie was "children of the corn". john travolta, and sissy what's her name were relitivly new actors in the film carrie. but i mean movies like "the others", "hide and seek" or "gothica". they just didnt really do it for me.

i have not seen shutters or the orphanage. so i can't tell ya what i think about them, but if it has big names. i guess worth the rent but dont be surpise that it doesn't freak ya out.

well if you haven't heard of 28 weeks later, then you might not have seen the first film which is 28 days later. in the first film the main star is the guy that plays the scarecrow in batman begins. he made the film when he was still unknown. i think of 28 days later as a horror/drama film. the idea of such a infection is kinda scary. 28 weeks later is the sequal, and has all unknown stars in it. def. continues in the vein of the first film but beefed up the action and suspense. personally i just enjoy zombie films alot. but 28 days/weeks is more of a viral thing.

Well I rented the Orpahnage, got home and the whole freakin things in spanish! with english subtitles. I remember the preview and it was not in spanish. took it back and got Shutter. It was okay. Its about a newlywed couple that move to Japan for his work (photographer) They end up taking alot of "spirit pictures" they FINALLY figure out they're being haunted by one spirit. I don't want to ruin it for you incase you watch it. but I'll give it about a 5 mayyybe a 5 1/2 fot the very ending. (they very last minute)

zombie movies huh, not quite my forte, but I can appreciate them. The Hills have eyes, Devils rejects, Cabin fever, freddy Kruger (the 1st is the best but the 2nd is good too) they're all good.

I'll let you know if I find anything worth mentiong.

Take care!

it's ok, i watch spanish fliq's too. so i'll be able to understand it. shutter sounds ok. but i'm guessing it's gonna be alot like the ring, or pluse, or any of those other japanise horror films. but i'll check it out. well i just saw planet terror and death proof. i think of the 2 planet terror was better, and a bit more scary. but it was more action then horror. death proof went by way to slow, not enough killing, but the car chase was sweet.

I've never heard of them, are they new or old? Action is good too. I pretty much like all movies. I just can't stand kung fu movies.

they are the "grindhouse" film by quinten taratino and robert rodriguez. it's 2 films that are shown back to back in theater, but on dvd they separated them. but from both films planet terror was much more better. the pace is fast and furious, while death proof was a slow dirge, but still entertaining.

Samo,

I had fun reading this; my vote goes to the 80 year old Adam West. By the way, I held off being a smart aleck on Erica's latest blog; I would have run the risk of grossing some people out, while reading before their breakfast or lunch breaks, and probably not be funny.

hey, whats up Samo! Just dropped by to say HI. Haven't seen any good movies latley, a dry spell. Prom Night "unrated" Lame! bad acting, not enough suspence, and the "bad" guy not very scary. I babysat my little sis Friday and we watched Penlope with Christna Ricci, that was cute. but I don't see you being into cute movies. but hey, it was better then Prom night.

The cult, huh. I need some new cds! I used to have a ton! pretty good selection, but my truck got stolen and all of them with it. Its hard and expensive to rebuild. The bigest problem is that so much of whats new out there is crap! I heard the new Metalica song yesterday. I thought it was pretty good. Have you heard it? I couldn't tell you the name of it.

any how, have a great day, by the way, you said you have a smashed hand, what happened?

Aug 27, 2008 | 4:08 PM

hey april, thanks for thinking of me. i appreciate it. always nice to know that i have peeps out there. my hand didnt smashed, but just a old injury from my construction days. it just swelled up and in alot of pain. but that's gone now, but i'm left with a odd looking bump on my wrist. doc's said it's just fluid, nothing to worry about, and massaging it should break it down. i haven't seen any great new movies. i was avoiding prom night. the original wasn't very good. your right about the cute stuff. but i do enjoy cartoons like cars or toy story.

sorry to hear about your truck, but wow, you drive a truck. you didnt seem like the truck type. i was getting more of a vibe of suv or small japanise car type. maybe if you were really trendy a mini cooper.

well i hope to talk to ya soon. if not, catch me on myspace. if you can't find me dont worry, i'll let ya know how you can. later.

Hey, how ya doin?

I saw 2 movies this weekend. On DVD. they were okay worth checking out if you have some down time.

An American Crime- this one is a bit morbid because its a true story. Its about these 2 sisters who come to live with this woman who has 5 children of her own. The girls parents run a booth in the circus and pay the woman $20 a month to keep them. The woman ends up locking the older sister in the basement and tourting her. I don't want to give the whole thing away, so let me know if you see it.

Felon-this one I got for 1 reason-and that reason is Val Kilmer!!! I haven't seen him in a while and he's one of my fav.s. He almost looks like "the Dude" (Jeff Bridges) in it. its about a man defending his family from an intruder and ends up going to prison after the guy dies. Stephen Dworf (hes actually okay in this, don't discriminate ;-) ) is the guy that goes to prison, and he ends up rooming with Kilmer who is a bad ass! anyway. I enjoyed it, you might too.

These aren't horror movies obviously but the only ones on DVD that I've found to be good. Let me know if you check them out. Or if you have any sujestions.
Thanks!
