An 8-year-old boy is charged with murder in the shooting of his father and another man in a rural community in eastern Arizona, authorities said Friday.

The boy was charged with two counts of premeditated murder in the death of his father, 29-year-old Vincent Romero, and 39-year-old Timothy Romans, St. Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick said.

Police arrived at the home within minutes of the shooting Wednesday, Melnick said. They found one victim just outside the front door and the other dead in an upstairs room.

The boy, who prosecutors say had never been in trouble before, initially denied involvement in the shooting but later confessed, Melnick said.

Police have not said what they think the boy's motive was.

Defense attorney Benjamin Brewer argued Friday that police overreached in questioning the boy without representation from a parent or attorney and did not advise him of his rights.

"They became very accusing early on in the interview," Brewer said. "Two officers with guns at their side, it's very scary for anybody, for sure an 8-year-old kid."

A judge determined at a hearing Friday that there was probable cause to believe the boy committed the killings. He is being held at the Apache County juvenile detention center.

I am wondering the same thing and 2 adult men not in the same location are killed? It sounds quite fishy to me I hope they check the 8 year olds hands for residue. I cannot see how they can charge him at all. Eight is young and he isn't the one who went out and purchased the gun, loaded it, and allowed a minor to know where it was.

A 8 yr old boy does not kill his daddy for nothing..So he was eather being beaten a lot could not take it no more or being molested..

Or someone else did it and like above said he is being framed...

I say check into the boys parents marage and into the fathers pass..

You show me a 8 yr old boy who is not beat or molested or mentaly disturbed who is capibal of shooting his father..Because most 8 yr olds love there dadys and have no reason to want them dead....

still no apparent motive

Ariz. (AP) — It's a crime that police officers in a small eastern Arizona community can hardly fathom yet have to deal with: an 8-year-old charged in the fatal shootings of his father and another man.

"Who would think an 8-year-old kid could kill two adults?" said St. Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick Friday.

The crime that unfolded Wednesday evening sent shock waves through St. Johns, a community of about 4,000 people northeast of Phoenix. The boy had no disciplinary record at school, and there was no indication he had any problems at home, prosecutors said.

"It was such a tragedy," said the boy's defense attorney, Benjamin Brewer. "You have two people dead; you have an 8-year-old in jail. It tugs at the heart strings. It's a shocker, no doubt about it."

On Friday, a judge determined there was probable cause to show that the boy fatally shot his father, Vincent Romero, 29, and Timothy Romans, 39, of San Carlos with a .22-caliber rifle. The boy faces two counts of premeditated murder.

Melnick said officers arrived at Romero's home within minutes of the shooting Wednesday. They found one victim just outside the front door and the other dead in an upstairs room.

Romans had been renting a room at the Romero house, prosecutors said. The two men were employees with a construction company that had a contract to do work at the Salt River Project power plant near St. Johns, which is about 170 miles northeast of Phoenix.

The boy had went to a neighbor's house and said he "believed that his father was dead," said Apache County attor

WOW! This is truly an amazing story but one that will really start defining when a "minor" becomes an adult.

Do 8 year olds even have a motive - period? I honestly can say that answer is no, mainly to this extreme. Unless they watched violence all 8 years and finally got fed up but....BUT....8 years old?

There is no way that I could (as a juror) convict an 8 year old on any type of murder charges. Even if this story is cut and dry how it sounds - no way. Even my 11 year old doesn't have motives...yet.

WOW!

An eight year old can choose to kill. Just because the community thinks everything was fine at home doesn’t make it so, as I can attest to. I prayed someone would kill my father, or that the police would put him in jail to keep him from hurting us any more, when I was as young as four. It is possible I may have chosen to shoot him if I’d thought about it and it was easy for me to access a loaded handgun, because I attacked him more then once to try to get him to stop beating on my mother.

If he is guilty I hope they find the real reason why so his punishment can be mediated if his reason was valid, or so he can get the right mental help if there is a different problem. Either way he will need good counseling for his mental well being. His lawyer could very well manage to act against the boy’s best interests though by preventing the truth from being known which can end up causing the boy to not get the correct type of mental assistance he needs because we have a legal system not a justice system.

yeah i heard about this and i agree with blogger above that an 8 year old doesn't even understnd motive...heck the kids still watches disney for jeepers sake...theres a lot more to this story than they are telling us...i could never put an 8 year old behind bars let alone convict him...if these 2 guys were a few feet apart then they should have reacted much quicker...something stinks here...and it isn't me...
