Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., predicted Congress would return after Election Day to work on a measure equal to or exceeding February's $168 billion stimulus package, which included $600 tax rebates for most individuals and tax breaks for businesses.

Even though we enjoyed our $1800 check, it did not go towards stimulating the economy.

We actually use the money to catch up on bills and the always increasing Ameren bills.

If they want a real motivator for the public then start decreasing our price at the pumps and start stricter rate regulations on our utilities.

Another check will only be used to catch up or put in the bank in preparation for that ever increasing utility bill.

good blog and I agree with you. We need lower utilities and lower gasoline and lower groceries and people will start spending more but until then we can see a recession. People are hesitant to use extra services like cable and internet and I hear some are going back to dial up internet. I may be doing that too although it would be very hard once you have the higher speed.

lih3134,
What's that supposed to mean?
Everyone got an equal share based on the same criteria.
Since when is it the nation's job to provide a college education to the public?
People are so spoiled theses days , they expect Uncle Sam to provide everything for them.
If you want to go to college , study and get good grades in school , get a job to save for it and do your homework for available grants and other amenities offered readily.
Once you get your education , you're not going to pay more taxes for us to recoup those funds so why should you get them?
People who pay for their own education pay the same taxes you do , why should you get more benefits from those taxes?
There are student loans at reasonable rates, isn't that enough?

Rebate check, what a crock.. It is only a loan on your tax return check for next year. So, go ahead and cash it. But, remember not to spend it.

When you do your tax's next year, you will be short changed out of what you received in your Rebate Checks from the Government.

Spending money is easy for us Americans, it is saving it that comes hard.

My comment had NOTHING to do with giving a kid a free college education… did you post on the wrong blog? And, please, if your in the know about so many great grants “with amenities” please share the information so all can benefit.

The criteria you are referring to wasn’t fair to all who work and pay their taxes. Anyone, age 17 or older, living at home, going to school AND working making more than the $3,000 and under the $75,000, paying their FAIR SHARE of taxes, just like you and me were not given ANY check, because of their age. That same criteria that allowed you to get your check from Uncle Sam (and I’m sure you didn’t send it back) the same $$ criteria my kid met was pulled out from under him and every kid in that age group because of their age and because they live at home. Don’t bother saying their parents collected it, cause that wasn’t the case either.

The kids in this category are working hard, doing the right thing and haven’t asked YOU or Uncle Sam for nothing, they are paying their way and the government let them fall through the cracks.

Now, a single teenage parent, age 17, living with another family member, can work 10 hours a week making minimum wage, collect food stamps, medical insurance, free day care, the earned income credit AND a rebate!

That is who you need to be worrying about paying for.

Hope that cleared it up for you.

I agree with it being classified as a loan. I think it's more of a "refund" of money that we've been overtaxed on for too many years.

Even though it's even ($600 per spouse and $300 per child) it's still money in our pockets and I agree with Tommy but since I am a liberal-conservative I'll just shop online yet never press SEND!

I also agree with it going to pay the ever increasing AmerenIP hikes! I am sick of it and anyone from Illinois needs to complain to the ICC about their poor decisions.

If they really wanted to get it back into the economy, they would have it to the people Thanksgiving week. The biggest shopping day of the year is Friday after Thanksgiving, and many would do their Christmas shopping with it. But I also agree, many will be playing cath-up on their bills, such as a tank of propane gas, $823. OUCH!!!! and will need another fill by January!!

Well I can't speak for everyone but a good 1k right about now would come in handy. I has to struggle to keep up bills do to high gas prices. Now that gas has come down I am still playing catch up. Hell they gave the mortage companies some money back give me some to. I pay taxed, I took a lost, like everyone else.

$1200, $1800, $600, doesn't matter -- it's all just a very small drop in a very large bucket filled with holes. Every time we turn around, some ups their prices. Yes, gas went back down, but have any of you seen that 'environmental charge' from your other suppliers go away (like the trash man, the electric co., the gas co., etc.)?

And why should WE bail out big companies that took on too much bad risk? Where were their risk managers and why aren't THEY PAYING FOR IT? Why should taxpayers bail out ANY mis-managed company? Many companies are still posting 3Q earnings -- only the mis-managed are reporting losses. And I personally do NOT want to bail them out nor just get an $1200 check that disappears in an instant with little to show for it value-wise.

Now here's a thought to solve both our personal economic woes AND the mortgage/home-owner crisis (this is NOT mine, this is from an anonymous source on the internet, but I LOVE IT!):

I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a 'We Deserve It Dividend'.

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bon-a-fide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a 'We Deserve It Dividend'.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has

Sorry, it cut off the rest of the text, as:

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00.

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved.

Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads. Put away money for college - it'll be there and those student loans won't be needed (many aren't really being used for the student part of it but rather just the living part of it anyway).

Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

Buy a new car - create more jobs.

Invest in the market - capital drives growth. Get those wall street brokers to stop whining.

Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves.

Remember this is for every adult U.S. Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we're going to redistribute wealth let's really do it...ins tead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ("vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.

If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U.S. Citizen 18+!

As for AIG - liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General International go back to being American General. Sell off their real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean
