the city of painesville has suffered another setback with the announcement that st. marys catholic school will be closing shortly......opened in 1862 and one of the oldest catholic schools in  northern ohio, st. marys has been a stabilizing element during the recent decline of the painesville area....as the flight from painesville gathers momentum, long term residents have vowed to dig in....the motto of many is..i dont care how bad things get...im staying in painesville..............their resolve is unwavering and their dedication to their city is inspirational.......but all in lake county are saddened to see the departure of another painesville institution

ricky, THIS i know about..........

this closure is a direct result of the priest & his "assistant" doing everything they can to undermine any principal they hire........like henchmen.

the parents of these kids are extremely unhappy with the political stuff that's been going on for quite a few years now. they are leaving this school left & right, because of it. and now the school is going broke.

what SHOULD have happened is that this priest & his flunky should have been REMOVED 5 years ago & replaced with someone who actually cared more about this kids education than they do their own political position in the diocese.

I know the school very well. I grew up in painesville. I had a friend who had both of her kids in school there. The one daughter was able to attend there until the last grade and moved on to Lake Catholic. HEr younger daughter is now going to 17 this July, she was having trouble when she was going there a few yrs ago with the tution. The tution had went up and she could not afford it. I am surprised, due to all the hispanics that live in the area and go to that church. Plus all the church members that attend St. Mary's. I thought catholic churches always helped the school? Well maybe they can get things resolved and someone might help them out. Too bad to see things like that go, especially when a building has been there that long. Just like the postoffice that use to be on square in painsville, in Veteran's Park.. They wanted a bigger postoffice and moved it on Jackson street. So many people were worried about the area and the crime there. The old post office building is there, now it holds parts of the court house. I was sadden to see the change with the postoffice. I know it was small, yet when a historical building like that...Yes, it is being used for something else at least they did not tear it down. Thanks RickyW for giving props for something good. I know you had a kind heart in there somewhere!!

hillbilly, 2 years ago that school accepted the vouchers & open enrollment for the poor kids in painesville to go there.

it was an absolute NIGHTMARE! almost NONE of the parents participated, (why would they? they didn't have to PAY for it) there was ALOT of trouble, they had to hire special teachers & aides to "police" these kids............so after that one year, they decided NOT to accept this anymore.

it was motivated by money with the intent of "propping up" the finances of the school, with the idea in mind to improve the overall education & provide an different learning environment for the "poor" children.

and one of the worst things, these "troubled", "poor" children had a negative effect on the already existing children..........and the parents that actually PAY for this education were FURIOUS that their children were being exposed to the things that go on in the public schools in Painesville. That is one of the reasons why people PAY high tuition for a private education..........to make sure their kids are NOT exposed to the crap that goes on in the public schools.
