Approx. 9:28 PM 2-2-08, my mother and I were driving down the highway and saw a police car screech across the Red Oak Road bridge across I35. We saw some cars turning around and stopping, so we were wondering what was happening. Well, there just happened to be an 18-wheeler trailer on fire roughly 200 feet away from us on the northbound service road on the highway. We took a few fast shots, but the one I am sending to you was the best. My name is Ryan Garr, I am a photojournalist for Hawk Eye News in Red Oak, Texas and thought yall would be the best people to get their hands on this clip for fast news. Hope it goes on the air! :-D . In the picture, the truck is facing towards the right. the fire is in the middle of the picture. Sorry it was blury, camera on the phone is not very good. Thanks for doing the news!

Front just passed through, again. We were on our bus on our way home from school driving by Red Oak City Park when it went from warm and humid to cold and dry in a matter of 10 seconds. Dark clouds began to approach the area. We could tell it was a front because of the winds being sucked in and then all of a sudden push back. Rain is now beginning to fall in our area. I have just checked Radar and it doesn't look its best. Still have a long night, but hopefully we will not ice over.

Some thunderstorms have developed over the area. Doesn't look too bad. A lot of thunder, but it looks like the lightning is staying up into the clouds. Half-dollar sized raindrops is now falling. The sky is a little dark, but the storm edge is near us so there is a lot of light in the near distance.

Wikipedia defines a Civil Defense Siren as:

"A civil defense siren (also referred to as an air raid siren, tornado siren, or outdoor warning siren) is a mechanical device (modern day sirens are electrically-powered) for generating sound to provide warning of approaching danger and to indicate when the danger has passed."

A CDS was designed initally for the warning of Air Raids during World War II.

Uses for the sirens may include:

  • Possible Air Raids
  • Flash Floods
  • Firefighters signalling emergencies
  • Aproaching Severe Storms
  • Tornadoes
  • Releases of Hazardous Materials (such as chemicals from a detached train or manufacturing plant)
  • The "All Clear"

So if you hear a siren, keep cautious and ready to jump into your safe place, but it does not always mean that there is a tornado.
