I wanted to weigh in on the Barrack Obama's speech.  I was very impressed that FOX aired it live, and not one other local station did so.   I found the speech remarkable, and candid in a way that no one has done so in such a postition as he is.  The watched the coverage at most of the morning news shows, and since I don't subscribe to cable, could not see how Fox News or  covered it.

Just like Barrack mentioned in his speech, show hosts on the news shows stepped carefully around the subject.  They had commentators of all pursuasions disecting what he meant or how they felt it would be viewed by the many perspective voters.  What was also evident is how the blacks who are on the different shows were caucious about praising the speech as much as I invision they did.  It is like every situation when race is discussed, where blacks and whites hear and feel something different.  Barrack mentioned OJ Simpson, and his feelings that he was guiltiy.  If you talk to the vast majority of blacks they would say the same thing, (probably 97%), but if you listen to the news shows they would replay over and over the same scenes when he was found not guilty and some blacks were jumping and happy.  It is always the same group of people, in the same film clips, but they were portrayed as representative of how blacks felt, when it was not true at all.  Barrack said later that evening, when interviewed for Nightline, that when there is a dramatic event of crime or killing that blacks hold there breath until a picture is shown of who it is that commited the offense.  We know that all blacks would be viewed differently if the perpertrator was a black person, unlike when the person is white.

Example :  Timothy McViegh who destroyed the building in Oklahoma - there was no mass pulling over of white males after or the implication that  white males were naturally violent.

I myself have been told by a camp counseler, (after he burned a book on Martin Luther King Jr), if I was upset that he burned the n*****r book.  This is as a child of about 13 and away from home.  This is just one of hundreds of examples of what my reality is as a black man in the US.  I had white friends that could come over my house, but I could not come to theirs, because some neighbors did not like blacks or their parents did not.  I remember an Eagle football player (I believe Troy Vincent), after visting a location in a perdominately white neighborhood of Philly with his wife, having bottles and rocks thrown at him.  It was not until he approached the people and they recognized him that they requested autographs. He was all of a sudden ok with them.

This is a never ending story in the life of Americans.  Barrack is the only one with the guts to attack this subject.  It took Gwen Ifill to go on Meet the Press and confront Tim Russert and reporters like him who were complicit with Don Imus by appearing on his show.  Just like after this speech, it seemed whites were grappling with how to address this Don Imus issue.  It took someone with a black perspective to explain it, simular to what Obama was trying to do, explain it.  With all her success as a journalist, Gwen Ifill when reporting at the White House was called by Don Imus a cleaning lady, or specifically, "now they have the cleaning lady reporting at the White House".  Just like in the Gwen Ifll, and Troy Vincent cases in some ways they are  saying that no matter what you do or position you reach you will always be a n****r in white society.

Being black in Philadelphia I am aware of places that you can drive or not drive without being harrassed.  (Route 309 - Lower Merion - Pennsauken - many places in NJ until it came to light about racial profiling) - I have friends in perdominately white areas and have been stopped numerous times for nothing, when visiting.  I have even been stopped for having a pair of my son's shoes hanging from the rear view mirror.  (new born shoes) I was told by the officer that it was obstructing my view, and was questioned on how I could afford such a nice car.  I always remember being told by my parents how to act when stopped by the police, I have never heard my white friends being instructed by their parents on conduct to prevent them from being hurt by police.  I am an advid golfer, and have done an experiment where my friends and we have gone to a high end Golf Club  and they go in first then sit in the clubhouse, and observe when I come in.  They heard so many racist and ignorant comments by some of the people.  They had more anger than I did because I became so used to it, because these people could not say it openly to me, but would comment in what they really thought in private.  Many of my friends are of different polictical views, Republican, Democrat, and I have always been registered Independent.  I have voted for Republicans, and Democrats in my life, and found it funny that there was such a buzz when Oprah made the statement that she had voted for as many Republicans as Democrats.  Some whites think that blacks are non thinking , and reactive people who would just vote for Barrack because he is black, but would not say the same about whites.  When Gov Rendell said that some whites in Pennsylvania would never vote for a black, he was just speaking the truth.  In the black community we talk about travelling in Pennsylvania for vacation, and speak of areas to watch out for in western PA, and other areas.  Some we label as Klan country, although there is no Klan there, we are just describing the mood there.  This is a reality that whites are not aware of, but if you spoke to  your black friends then you would have an awakening, but like Barrack said it is not spoken amongst friends, it is ignored.  My friends and I talk all the time, and they are honest in their concerns with some in the black communtiy that use the victim stance.  I explain to them that Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton are not the voice of the black community, although the media will go to them to get the "black view" which blacks just hate.  Most blacks I know do not like the approach that both of them take, but the media does not take this approach.  Oprah, Tiger Woods, Jordon, are some of the most prominent blacks and represent more the average black person.  They don't walk around attacking race, but work hard to be the best they can be, and show by example who they are

I hope finally that this opens a dialogue amongst people privately so they could start to understand each other.

I would vote for Condi Rice in a heartbeat, who is both black and female. It has nothing to do with race or sex. It's about a political view on what's best for our country. I would never vote for either Obama or Hillary, and not because of their race or sex, but due to their political leanings. Those who believe that less government and lower taxes are best for the American people could not, in good conscience (something foreign to most liberals, I might add), vote for either of them.

Liberals have been trying their goverment programs at taxpayer expense for decades to address social problems. They have failed miserably. Some day perhaps the citizens of our cities will wake up. Right now, the liberal establishment fosters a victim mentality which keeps people where they are at rather than challenging them to reach higher. It is an endless cycle. You would think after electing liberals to run our cities for decades now and seeing the absolute failure of their policies that have resulted the citizens of our urban areas would vote them out and try something new and different. They won't because this group has them in their grasp and our urban centers have become dependent on government rather than themselves. We all have challenges and suffer unfairly. But until people can put this past them and move on, it will keep holding them back from what they could be. And most of them have no one to blame but themselves. If immigrants from Southeast Asia can come to this country with no money, speaking no English and having few opportunities and can, within one genera

generation, become very successful without government assistance or aid, then anyone can do this despite the inequities and injustice they have experienced in the past or may still be experiencing. It's just becomes a bunch of excuses for failure and dependence, and it's getting old.

You sound like an upstanding role model as do Obama and his wife. Perhaps you can all move the dialog forward and point people forward rather than looking backward. We can't deny the past. But dwelling on it, continuing to complain about it and never breaking away from government dependence and intervention will never provide the future hope that many blacks are looking for. Had Obama's pastor focused on Jesus' teachings about forgiveness and loving your enemy, it would have been quite a bit more productive and useful to his congregation than the hatred we've heard him spew from his pulpit.

P.S. You sound like a great father. Families in our cities are missing fathers, which I believe is one of the biggest contributors to the crime and other urban social problems of our day. When fathers in mass are MIA, society will break down. They are, and it has.

Stever - I agree with you one hundred percent.

Pride - Many black folks I have talked to over the years echo your sentiments about Sharpton and Jackson. But, there exist a stereotype (among the black community) about whites being the only ones that are serial killers and child molesters, and I've seen that echoed on this very blog, more than once. I guess it just goes to show you that you can't just lump people together by race, creed or gender.

Good blog.

Btw....I would never vote for either democrat for the exact same reasons stever posted, and yes, I would vote for Rice also. I find McCain to be the best of a pretty lame bunch' although I disagree with him on Immigration and climate change.

One more thing....Our society is becoming more and more polarized politically. Common ground is becoming harder and harder to find, political discussions devolve into arguments with personal insults thrown in, heck, I've even seen fist fights started by political agruments. Not a good thing.

ibejim - you are so right about stereotypes that exist in the black community about about whites - I have even heard blacks say "who would "they" (whites) rather have live near them - Uncle Jim the molester or me", so we have the same issues in each community....I have some very interesting views on how our government should work and will list it in a blog today

B.E. Note: Well the beat goes on. Mr. Obama said “AMERICA WITH ONE VOICE”. Hmmmmm!
I wonder if he has been following the Philadelphia, Gino’s Steaks saga. It sure sounds the same. Gino’s Steaks have a signed post on the window of that business; “WE SPEAK ENGLISH IN AMERICA”. This may sound like Mr.Obama plagiarized someone else. I totally do not agree with the Commission On Human Relation’s in Philadelphia. My wonderful friends who are Asian, Indian, Blacks Jewish, Polish, Greeks and others don’t agree with Management of Gino’ Steaks either. Most feel horrible to sit under that sign for any reason. Gino’s management said; this is freedom of speech. Well, Merry Christmas signs, removing prayers from our schools and taking down plaques off our government buildings that references the Ten Commandments and In God We Trust is also free speech but our Supreme Courts said they had to go. It was not free speech. Now, who side is Mr. Obama truly on? Also I wonder if he ever get tired of what seems to be plagiarizing others, will he ever be his own person?

I don't understand this plagiarizm debate. Most polititians have speech writers, most people I read on blogs are repeating things they heard someone say on FOX News, if conservative or whatever liberal media if views are liberal. Most speeches I hear have some quote from someone else. For god's sake our children plagerize to learn to speak. It's just like the "flip flop" debate. I find it refreshing that someone who would adjust their views after becoming educated would be considered to be a bad thing. Then we all should be considered "flip floppers" if we don't believe in Santa Claus. The problem today is that people do not think for themselves any longer. They repeat postitions which they are not familiar if they are true or not. Gino's has his opinion, and before the controversy, I ordered a sandwich using Italian, which they found funny. They were not rude or anything. I ordered in Spanish, and then French just to living it up. I agree that we are a english speaking country, and understand his opinion, although I might not agree totally with everything he thinks.

To ppd3066,
I believe you may have misinterpreted what Sen. Obama said by "America with one voice". He did not mean everyone in America should speak english only. He meant, everyone would be on an even keel and in positive agreement for our country. And please, enough with the plagerism comments. He doesn't quote any more than any other candidate. As soon as he says one thing out of his mouth, his comments are scruntinized and picked apart. Give the man the credit he deserves and give him a break why don't you. Instead of dwelling on "his so called plagerism" listen to what the man is saying about important issues. That is what's important. Again pride101, you're right on point.

Mr. Obama is a well-educated, energetic and charismatic-type individual. But what he means by "America with One Voice" is that everyone needs to agree with him and his policies, and it is in your best interest to do so. Those who disagree with him and his party on issues like abortion, gay marriage, global warming and the conflict in Iraq are intolerant bigots who should be silenced so that this ONE VOICE can rise up. The end result of this policy is COMMUNISM. I am not accusing him of being a communist. But that is where his/these policies end up taking us. Why not ask many Chinese what they think of government imposed ONE VOICE? His vision for America is frankly frightening. The problem is that he's stepped up at a time when many Americans are unsettled about any number of things and are eager for change. But the key is what the change is, not that there will be a change.

As for Genos. His sign was to make a point, not to refuse service to those who can't speak English, as pride101 has found out. The issue is that this is America, a melting pot of immigrants who all learned English and respected our laws and culture. That doesn't mean they did not or could not speak their native tongue. And it did not mean they could not practice many of their cultural traditions. But they came, learned the language and assimilated into our country no matter whether they were Indian, Black, Jewish, Polish, Greek or any race, religion or ethnic background. The problem today is that some illegals want to force their ways on the rest of society and refuse to assimilate

into the country. There are tons of legals lined up to become citizens who will. Those who won't should be sent packing, and that was his point. The media made a big hulabaloo over nothing. Learn English! That's not too much to ask for the privilege of living in the land of opportunity.

And as for people not thinking for themselves, I couldn't agree with you more. When someone has the audacity to question global warming with opposing scientific facts or the possibility that there was an intelligent designer responsible for the universe, decades of liberal indoctrination in our universities and colleges have us to the point where students who dare question what they are being taught are chastised or failed in the class and faculty who dare to question things are fired and silenced. Intelligent debate and thinking for oneself used to be the main purpose for the university setting and study. No more. Unfortunately today, most of our kids' college education is indoctrination, not teaching them to think for themselves and debate. And as a result, we are suffering decline as a nation.

He called people in small town America Rednecks ...in his TYPICAL , elitist and liberal way. "It is what it is"! I have been to many small towns and these people are some of nicest you ever want to meet. Stop trying to make them out to be the boggy man. What? Do they have to invite buffoons to their town like 50 cents Akorn and snoop dog to show they are not this or that? Ridiculous! What I have found however, larger cities that are filled with so called liberals are much harsher and meaner. Oh sure , they say the right things - fairness and openness -but then hide behind trees and trow the rocks and excite riots. But liberals(white and black) would never admit to that.
