Over the strong objection of federal safety officials, a quiet movement to lower the legal drinking age to 18 is taking root as advocates argue that teenagers who are allowed to vote and fight for their country should also be able to enjoy a beer or two. The proposal, which is the subject of a national petition drive by the National Youth Rights Association, has been studied in a handful of states in recent years, including Florida, Wisconsin, Vermont and Missouri, where supporters are pushing a ballot initiative.

B.E. Note: Look, people who reads my blogs know that I'm partly blind~I call myself the Blind Editorial.

But, this is the most dumbness piece of BLEEP any serious minded Politician could have dreamed up. look, I served my country and are willing to die for God and my country. But for someone to say If he is old enough to fight for his country. He or she is old enough to drink. I say; to hell with the death tolls of the war. Let's look at the death tolls of this "GREAT" U.S.A. . The greatest superpower country in the world who is also the greatest police country in the world. By the way we have the greatest amount of deaths in the world. Now, let's add them to the deaths of the war. At least of sober alcohol and drug free soldiers are doing a fantastic job in the war proving they are the and best representative this country has to offer. Yes, sober alcohol and drug free. Our children and some adults are dying at an alarming rate mainly for nothing. We can't find an answer now as to why our young folks are picking up guns and rifles killing each other. So, some lame brain three piece suit have nothing better to do, than to submit a suggestion to lower the drinking age to 18. WOW! I guess, if our brave military men if drunk, makes the pain of possibly getting killed easier.  Mr. nothing to do politician man stop wasting our tax money paying your salary.  There are other serious matters  our great country is facing. Just in case you need something to do like: two countries with "A" bombs and their finger on the trigger, Our troops dying at an alarming rate, China destroying the US economy with their importing and exporting and getting stronger, global warming, Americans dying at an alarming rating with in our states. Arabs holding US Citizens hostage with their high oil prices. Please, Mr. nothing to do. *JUST PICK ONE*. Leave the suggestion to raise the drinking age to 18 alone.  We Americans are truly tired of all the dying, mostly of young folks. The magic word is still TEEN.

People that are old enough to vote and fight for their country already can drink a beer or two as long as they are on the miltary base, where the age is 18. Sorry, not getting out that easy! So if you want to enjoy a beer or two at 18, join the military and fight for your country.

Almost every european country allows drinking below 21. Now im no god of logic, but they arent as fat, suicidal, or aggresive as us.

HINT: Maybe it isnt alcohol causing our problems? American logic is not the best in everything. We still fail to use the metric system......we arent exactly the best in standarized ideals.

The reason Americans die from this stuff is lack of responsibility. People crave things they cant get. When they cant get alcohol.... what do they do? They will get it anyway. ALL of my friends, at one time or another drink. But they do it illegally, and there lieswith the problem. People make alcohol out to be such an adult product, that younger people are going to go and get it illegally just to be "cool"

The point is simple: drinking alcohol legally usually allows people to under go a few things:

1) Its no big deal. Alcohol doesnt taste good, the only reason people like it is because it is, well, alcohol. Allow people to have it when they want, and the need goes away.

2) Legal drinking is handled better than illegal drinking. When someone drinks legally, they are open about it and will handle it reasonably too. When you drink illegally.... it is going to force you to do other illegal things.

My thinking is this: If you think I am able to fight in a foreign country and die for it, i should be able to come home with the little money i make there and spend it playing slots or drinking a beer.

Amen Brother!!! For that matter, legalize all drugs. It's been shown time after time, that only a small percentage of the population would abuse drugs if they were legal. Under a legalized PRIVATE drug program you could do the following things.
1) fund rehabilitation programs
2) end drug related crime. Remember, there is money in only because there illegal
3) legalizing drugs would reduce the need for large government run police agencies FBI,ATF,and local law enforcement. Thus lower taxes
4) Many terrorist organizations get funding through trafficking.
5)Sales of legalized drugs would provide a tax base.
6) Registered drug users unable to hold jobs would be barred from social assistance programs (except rehab)
7) Best of all, legalized drugs would would
remove most profit from the trade. If your not making money dealing, your not going to deal. Drug trafficking would die if there is no profit. That means No drugs, no trafficking, no availability, lower crime, fewer murders and potentially lower taxes.

This is a good example of "why we don't even entertain the thought of lowering the drinking age. I guess, we are all over "21" who are bloggers on this subject. Strange, that we are sober and yet can't think clearly if we shoud lower the drinking age, without throwing insults at each other. Being sober and clear minded we go from a liquid drug to heavier drugs. Many homeless are walking around our streets and good families are totally distroyed in this country because of drugs one form or another. Yes, we don't even have enough funding for afterschool and other social programs, in this country. Where would the extra funding come from for rehabilitation programs to treat the new alcohol dependeds, that would happened with a lowering of the drinking age. By the way, before I entered the military I was drinking just about anything and yes, getting into some trouble because of it. We all know that there are two laws that governs this coutry. The street laws you live by everyday and the laws of our country's government, who is supposed to set an example for our country.

Read my suggestion again. If you legalize all drugs, the traffickers will dissapear because there would be no profit. No profit means no dealers. No dealers means no drugs. A simple equation.
Pharmacies are designed to handle drug transactions. People who choose to use would register at the local pharmacy. If you choose to use, you would be barred from government provided social services EXCEPT rehab. With this type of system, crime/murder would drop substantially. Gang violence would be reduced. Funding of terrorist programs would be reduced. And government police agencies could cut staffing. Eventually, you will get off the drugs or die.If you study the era of prohibition you'll discover that banning alchohol/drugs is as useless as lighting a candle in the wind. It just won't work!!! I say lets put the cards on the table and recognize the nature of man. People are smart, if they want drugs, they'll get drugs. Any other assertion in absurd.

You are wrong about legalizing drugs and having traffickers disappear. They legalized gambling and that didn't put a dent in the bookmakers taking illegal bets or taking numbers. New York at one time had a drinking age of 18. They changed that a long time ago because they were having problems with the younger drinkers. Keep the drinking age at 21. You are correct also about being able to drink on a military base at the age of 18. If you want to drink legally at 18, enlist, and fight for your Country. Don't say your old enough to fight for your Country, but stay at home and want to drink.

nja, The fact that your country believes you have the potential to go to war and not drink baffles me.

Perhaps drinking is for people of the age 21 (That is assuming every European country is wrong), but even so, either LOWER the drinking age or RAISE the enlisting age.

You are correct Alex, Europeans regularly drink, and have no drinking age yet the inncidence of abuse is virtually nil. DRUG ABUSE WILL OCCUR WHETHER DRUGS/ALCHOHOL ARE LEGAL OR ILLEGAL. My suggestion is that we recogonize that this is the situation and build our laws around these facts. We cannot stop illegal drugs, but we can manage the issue with success. Wait......we could continue with the same broken system and maintain the insanity or we could take a different approach and see if it will work. Clearly, what we're doing now is not the answer. As a tax payer I'm freaking tire of paying for a correctional system that houses addicts (for years on end) and allows them to have a higher standard of living than most people around the world. But your right, let's make like an ostrich and bury our heads in the sand.

I'm sory to read AlexR that you can relate two wrongs to equal a right. Then blame a country. (War is wrong and drugs of any kind is wrong)There are people in countries where we know Jesus walked and died for us. These countries today are known around the world as blessed grounds. But, more human blood is shed on those grounds than anywhere else in the world. Human beings commit some of the worst horrible acts of usless killing of the old, the weak, the sick and mostly the children. WE (us) real thinking people of this world need to stop the killings along with the use of drugs of any kind. But, I forgot! A lot of big green backs passes through many hands because of the demand for this product. Strangely, alot of Europeans I bit is making some pretty good money. I would also bet you, if a known drug pusher or dealer throw a block party today. Those same folks who call the pusher or dealer a scumbag, would be at that party in support of the person enjoying themselves. Whatever we do, lowering the drinking age should be the last thing we do right now. Our country don't need to face anymore crisis right now.
