Two men have appeared in a US court accused of making threats to kill Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal agents say.

They were also charged with possessing an unregistered firearm and conspiracy to steal from a licensed gun dealer.

The pair were named as Daniel Cowart, 20, and Paul Schlesselman, 18.

Court papers allege that the neo-Nazi skinheads planned to assassinate Mr Obama in a murder spree targeting more than 100 black people.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said the men had made their first appearance before a court in Jackson, Tennessee, on Monday after being arrested last week in Crockett County in the same state.

An ATF official said agents had seized a rifle, a sawn-off shotgun and three pistols during the arrests.

The two men have not yet entered a plea but are due to appear in court again later this week.

'Amateurish'

The pair allegedly planned to rob a gun store and then carry out a killing spree at an unnamed predominantly African-American high school, the Associated Press quoted court records as saying.

Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office of the ATF, told AP that the two men had planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

Mr Cavanaugh said the men had sought to go on a national killing spree, with Mr Obama as its final target.

"They said that would be their last, final act - that they would attempt to kill Senator Obama," Mr Cavanaugh told AP.

"They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying."

The court documents quoted the two men as saying that they would dress up in white tuxedos and top hats then drive their car as fast as possible toward Senator Obama, shooting at him from the windows.

The BBC's Adam Brookes in Washington says that although the plot seems to have been amateurish and the threat to Barack Obama himself not particularly credible, the US authorities clearly believe that the two had the means and the intent to carry out some kind of attack on black students.

The Obama campaign had no initial comment on the report.

Mr Obama, who if elected will become the first black US president, is leading Republican rival John McCain in opinion polls ahead of the 4 November election.

Thanks to the hate that is being sprewed at the McCain/Palin rallies. They have made it OK with white America to kill Obama.

Palin did open the door for this. Once she started talking, the racist hatemongers, the angry americans with their guns, began to come out of the back woods and into the political arena. The McCain/Palin rally with "bomb Obama" and "kill him" being shouted.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if more of these cases start popping up as the election nears(and after the election). A dark chapter of our past is being reopened again.

Hussein_Obama, yes she did look at all that has happened in such a short span of time since the McCain/Palin rallies started the hate talk, misleading their supporters to believe Obama is a terrorist, muslim, and saying that we don't know who he is.

people started shouting, kill him, bomb him, and then you had the misguided McCain Campaign worker in PA race baiting and the Republican party jumping all over it, you had a man bring a monkey to one of their rallies with the Obama's name on it, there was a woman who stood up and said she did not trust Obama because he is an Arab and now this,Skin heads plotting to kill him and 80 other African-Americans. Prior to this election and the hate filled speeches when was the last time in this country we had so many race baiting hate in a short time span in this country?

She has been the one inciting the crowds at her rallys. She is the one who started preaching about William Ayers for the last few weeks. McCain's crowds have increasingly become unruly, with audience members saying lies and shouting threats. Outside the rally is even worse.

What Palin has done is awaken the racist/hatemonger component of society by giving them a place to feel "comfortable". The McCain campaign is fast becoming a place for the lunatic fringe.
