Found this article and thought it made a great point. keep an open mind.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) – Two weeks before an election that could install the first black U.S. president, scattered ugly incidents have reflected a deep residue of racism among some segments of white America.

A cardboard likeness of Barack Obama was found strung from fishing wire at a university, the Democratic presidential nominee's face was depicted on mock food stamps, the body of a black bear was left at another university with Obama posters attached to it.

Though the incidents are sporadic and apparently isolated, they stirred up memories of the violent racial past of a country where segregation and lynchings only ended within the last 50 years.

And some feared that Obama could be a target for people who reject him on racial grounds alone. The Illinois senator leads Republican rival John McCain in polls ahead of the November 4 election and has a big following in many sections of Americans, from liberals to conservatives, black and white, poor and wealthy.

"Many whites feel they are losing their country right before their eyes," said Mark Potok, who directs the Southern Poverty Law Center that monitors hate groups. "What we are seeing at this moment is the beginning of a real backlash."

Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said the incidents were disappointing but he said there were fewer than some had predicted.

"We've always acknowledged that race is not something that's been eradicated from our politics," said Axelrod. "But we've never felt that it would be an insuperable barrier and I don't think that it will be."

The latest incident occurred on Monday when the body of bear cub was found on the campus of Western Carolina University in North Carolina. Obama campaign signs were placed around the dead animal's head. School officials said it was a prank.

Earlier a cardboard likeness of Obama was strung up with fishing wire from a tree at a university in Oregon and an Ohio man hung a figure bearing an Obama sign from a tree in his yard. The man told local media he didn't want to see an African-American running the country.

ANGRY INDIVIDUALS

Potok said the displays of racism did not appear orchestrated as part of a campaign of racial intimidation, but were rather the acts of angry individuals. Their voices are often heard in radio call-back shows or letters to editors.

Many Americans "see the rise of minority rights, gay rights, women's rights as a threat to the world they grew up in and that their parents grew up in. They see huge demographic changes," he said.

"They see jobs disappearing to other countries, and now they see a man who is African American and who will very likely become president of the United States. For some of those people that symbolizes the end of the world as they know it."

He estimated there were as many as 800 white supremacy or nationalist groups in the United States, with at least 100,000 as "an inner core" of membership and many more on the fringes.

One such group, the League of American Patriots, last month distributed literature about why a "black ruler" would destroy the country.

Michigan State University professor Ronald Hall, writing in his new book "Racism in the 21st Century," said racism remains one of the most pressing U.S. social problems, though it now takes forms that are more subtle than the lynchings and mob violence seen decades ago in some parts of the country.

Some groups tagged with racist acts deny the charge.

In California, a Republican group said it intended no racial overtone when its October newsletter depicted a fake food stamp bearing a likeness of Obama's head on a donkey's body surrounded by fried chicken, watermelon and other images evoking insulting stereotypes about African-Americans.

Some acts have targeted not Obama's black heritage -- his father was Kenyan and his white mother was from Kansas -- but the false notion that he is a Muslim.

A derogatory billboard in West Plains, Mo., went up last month showing a caricature of Obama wearing a turban.

"There are a lot of Republicans and McCain supporters who find it hard to believe that a black guy whose middle name is Hussein is going to be the next president of the United States," said David Bositis, senior research associate at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

David Wolff, a 52-year-old white Pennsylvania voter who plans to cast his ballot for Obama, said he commonly hears racist comments and thinks such sentiments are deeply rooted across America.

"One thing that could speed up the eradication of racism would be to have a charismatic, inspirational, transformational, generational black president," he said.

I'm not voteing for him because he's black, I'm not voteing for him because his policys suck. I am one of those idiots that do research before I vote. It would be nice if everybody did that.

I love how you guys love the word (racism) when in fact it is the Democratic party thatis racist....Remember, The republicans freed the slaves the democrats loved to own...It was the Democrats that started the KKK and not only killed blacks but republicans too.
It was the democrats that voted against civil rights bills.....I could go on but I think you get my points.

He isnt Black any more than he is white, but his supporters have decided he is black because that is more interesting to them. They have no problem pulling out the race card. He isnt scary because of his race he is scary because of his radical plans. New International Partners, "generated" world crisis, share the wealth, etc etc etc. If he was named Barack Obama and he had pale skin and freckles and those big ears and his same ideas how much chance do you think he would be running for pres? His supporters cant see that the ideas are bad no matter the color of his skin.

That actually would be a good guy on the street interview. Take Obama speeches and play them as if they were from a new white nerdy guy who wanted to run for pres. His same supporters would tear up the pale, freckle face, probably laugh right out loud at his ideas. But unfortunately they cant hear him cause they are so busy being happy how he looks.

I think abuse of Sarah Palins image and sexist slams far far outdo any of these incidents.

Even though I dont like Hillary - she would be delighted if these were the only examples of hate against her femininity (or lack therof)that you could find.

The dems by far are the racists and sexists in this campaign.

You know I just realized that is why Biden got in so much trouble when all he did was repeat Obama's ideas. When they aren't coming from the magic mouth you can hear the actual content.

I was going to vote for Obama in 2 weeks but I changed my mind. The nearer we are to the election, the clearer my understanding as to who this man(Obama) is. I will vote for the lesser of two evils. I will change my pledge and will vote for McCain.

More lib CnP....

Amazing that supporters of B. Hussein Obama can hurl the "racist" tag, but refuse to look into his association and the beliefs of his overtly racist minister. More proof that the Kool-Aid is working.

ROFLMAO!!!

But now OF COURSE we can't discuss the fact that the overwelming majority of blacks in this country will vote FOR HIM because he is black. How is THAT not as racist as you can get!!

Lets not forget that he is only HALF BLACK, and yet we have dumped the other than black side of him under the bus?

Another PERFECT example of liberals trying to make a case on something with no core position of their own!

America no longer is going to be scared of being tagged racist because someone else says so from an even MORE racist position!

NOTHING said of the OJ Simpson supporting community that NEVER took a single piece of evidence into account, they just wanted the man to win because of his skin color alone!!

No difference here..

So will it racist to say that IF Obama gets in the White House some idiot will try and assassinate him because of his/her racist beliefs? IF Ronald Reagan had an assassination attempt against him and you know that Ronald Reagan is one of America's most beloved President what makes you think that Obama wont be assassinated when or if he gets into office. and there are some people in America who really DONT like Obama because of his skin color. Just like on the other side of coin there are some people who dont like McCain of his skin color. Not too many people can accept change. and by change i mean another person other than white in the White House. but someone has to break the mold and once we have someone other than male or white in office then those who hold racist views will have to grow accustomed to the idea.

I am not voting for Obama because I am a Christian with values that don't agree with his.
It has nothing to do with his race.
Because of my name and race, people assume I would vote for Obama, but that is not the case.

yeah, there's so many disqualifiers, even before you get to color! I believe Obama's sensationalism "undone," any steps this country has made toward improving race relations; blacks have shown, for the most part, that they indeed project more racism views than whites....Now, with the possibility of electing a "KING of ENTITLEMENTS," they're getting off the couch, and working 1 day in four years...to keep their lifestyle. Not all blacks are this way, however, I was amazed at some of my friends, who are black, who virtually refuse to talk to me because I support McCain...So Yeah, I'm becoming racist, just like them.

I want my entitlements for funding the welfare, foodstamp, school deseg, Affirm Action, and all the other gov't freebie programs that have been abused for the last 40 yrs or so.....I want a refund because none of that garbage evidentally works; just like they whine about restitution from slavery days, well, I want my restitution for my slavery days; my days of endless payments into social programs that do nothing but allow them to stay at home and have more kids we have to support!

Ya know.. Joe the Plumber made an EXCELLENT point yesterday!!

He said that his income requires him to be available for drug screening. That includes employee health benefits too.

HOW ABOUT WE REQUIRE ANY ENTITLEMENTS OR GOVT. FUNDING REQUIRE DRUG SCREENING!

In order to get any socialized healthcare, foodstamps, WIC, unemployment, etc. you must be clean!

If its so important that Baseball players be clean that we must have CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY over it, surely we should apply it to the general public then.

To say that Obama is black is to insult every decent Black man. I would love to elect a black man and put all this race crap behind us. I was very excited about Obama when I first saw and heard him speak. I thought its about time. Then I did some research and I thought well I really dont agree with him, (partial birth abortion and infanticide especially) but what the hell all polititians are idiots lets see what this idiot can do at least hes different. Then I did some more research and I thought wow I dont at all agree with him and even though McCain doesnt set my world on fire I am voting McCain. - But if Obama gets in checks are in place - what could he really do. So what. Then I tried to look into Obama history which is very very hard to do for a public figure he has is so under protective wrap - but what sticks out the edges is damn scary. Then I heard him get comfortable and really speak and I heard Biden repeat his words. I heard "generated" world crisis in 1st 6months, I heard all branches democratic - no checks no balances. Share the wealth - heard him repeat word for word Marxist teachings counting on the fact that his supporters dont know who Karl Marx was. Obama speaks of new international partners without bringing "ideology" into the picture. Who is this man contemplating partnering with?????? What "ideologies" are we going to ignore???????? He says he will take america on a new path when he is tested during this "generated" crisis he is talking about. America will no longer "bluster and threaten" So when attacked in the future we will just say

I am a die hard republican, but in the beginning of this race I considered Obama cause of disgust with the world as we know it. Thought maybe he wont be accountable to either party and that would be refreshing. NOW I DONT CONSIDER IT REFRESHING AT ALL it is down right scary cause not only wont he be accountable to either party, but he wont be accountable to the American people - "You have to trust us when in the first 6 months we do things that you wont think are right" "You have to stay with us even though our decisions will be very unpopular" He wont be accountable to our allies or the world community. He will only be accountable to his own warped vision. "He gets it" He is a cookie cut out of every charismatic wacko who have lulled people to sleep with sweet lullabies before. Hitler, Karesh, the guy who was sending everyone on the comet - what was his name?
Folks no one will save us from this life we have to live it one day at a time through hard work. When someone offers to save you from this current life with a wonderful plan that only they are privy to. They will save you from your life alright, they will take that life from you and you will wish you could have it back to the way it was before you laid eyes on them. Wake up folks.

We need to run like hell from this wacko like the Germans should have run from Hitler, like all the followers of all the megalomaniacs should have run. Don't have some kid in history class looking back through history at their teacher saying "Dude why didnt they listen to what he said?" He basically announced his plans and they voted him in anyway????? Wow Dude - how does that happen?

1foxblog... Yea that idea of "real change" and not being like the typical Washington insider sort of dried up here in the last few months didn't it....

I don't think EITHER candidate is running the race they intended to. McCain was fast running for the moderate/independent vote, and found that when he opened that door, NOBODY was there! So now he is fast running BACK to the conservative right, and letting Gov. Palin take lead!

I myself would have initially voted for Obama, to teach the Republicans a lesson, but have to now take my own medicine, and put country first and vote for McCain so we will have a chance to keep American from becomming a muslim influenced socialist state like France, Finland, Germany, and most of Europe now....

I was Born in Burlington Iowa in Feb of 1986. I moved to Florida in 1992 and have been in the same town sence. I graduated from Pine Ridge High School in 2004. In High School, I found two passions. I fell in love with TV. Not, just the TV, but the idea to be on and make TV. I want to be a director. I go to the University of Central Florida. My other love that I came across at Pine Ridge High School is my future wife, Elizabeth. She is the sun in my day and the moon in my night. She is my best friend and the only woman on Earth that I ever want to be with. I grew up a NASCAR fan and it started two months after I was born when future NASCAR star Ernie Irvan was holding me at a local dirt track. The drivers I follow now are Jeremy Mayfield, Denny Hamlin, David Ragan, Jeff Burton, Tony Stewart, Casey Mears, Scott Riggs, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Bobby Labonte, Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch, Juan Pablo Montoya, Dave Blaney, Jamie McMurry, Scott Wimmer, Reed Sorenson, and A.J Allmindinger. I Think Dale Earnhardt Jr. is over rated. And I know Jeff Gordon isn't a fan friendly driver. My heros are Richard Petty, Ryan Cooper (The firefighter who ran into the Sanford houses in 2007) and Fireball Roberts. I also fell into the typical sports like football and baseball. I root for the Tampa Bay Bucs for the NFL season and for MLB I follow the Boston Red Sox. I Currently work at Lowe's in Orange City and love my job there as a Outside power equipment Associate. I'm treated well and the job is nice and relaxing. I plan on getting married really soon to Elizabeth. We set a date for March 6th 2010!!!!!
