Below are the Phillies' current salary commitments for 2008:

Players

2B - Chase Utley - 7.5 million

3B - Wes Helms - 2.15 million

SS - Jimmy Rollins - 7 million

LF - Pat Burrell - 14 million

Pitchers

SP - Adam Eaton - 7.635 million

SP - Jamie Moyer - 5.5 million

RP - Tom Gordon - 5.5 million

RP - Brett Myers - 8.5 million

RP - Julio Mateo - 1.5 million (option)

Total money committed = 59.285 million

Arbitration Eligible Players and best guess on their salaries

1B - Ryan Howard - 6 million

RP - Ryan Madson - 2.5 million

OF - Jayson Werth - 2.5 million

Total money for arbitration eligible players = 11 million

Players under Phillies Control

SP - Cole Hamels - 1 million

SP - Kyle Kendrick - 400 K

RP - Mike Zagurski - 400 K

RP - Matt Smith - 400 K

RP - Scott Mathieson - 400 K

OF - Michael Bourn - 400 K

OF - Gregg Dobbs - 400 K

OF - Shane Victorino - 400 K

C - Carlos Ruiz - 400 K

Total money allocated to resign players under control = 4.2 million

Assuming the Phillies bump the payroll to about $100-105 million, that leaves roughly $26-31 million to sign free agents. The most prudent way to use that $26-31 million is to invest in pitching and possibly 3rd base. The Phillies must let Aaron Rowand walk. Below is how I see the Phillies needs:

Assuming Myers stays in the closer role:

SP - Curt Schilling (1 year deal) - $10 million

RP - $3 million

RP - $3 million

RP - J.C. Romero - $3 million

3B - Mike Lowell (only if he'll take a 2 year deal) - $12 million

Please keep in mind that this analysis was done not factoring in potential trades. this is simply what the payroll is expected to be with commitments that the team has today.

nice job,do you really think 6 million is enough to pay the reigning strikeout king ryan howard(mr. k)

he's only 1st year arbitration eligible...$6-7 mil would be the max he could get if the Phils go that route. They can resign him before he goes to arbitration for whatever they want.

Sound plan there. Could they sign a second starter since having Eaton in there may be another disaster. I guess you can't do much else with him, unless there is a trade (Phils pick up a lot of the salary) which you mentioned isn't in the analysis.

Eaton is tradeable, but only if we eat 60-70% of the contract...and we won't get much in return...maybe a fringe A ball prospect.

I hear he is considering going to see a well known sports psychiatrist. Can't hurt at this point.

Most likely scenario is that eaton is the #5 starter coming out of Spring Training.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

Phillies Have $20MM To Burn

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Todd Zolecki tallied up the Phillies' commitments and determined that they have roughly $20MM free to spend on pitching, third base, and perhaps Aaron Rowand. Zolecki feels that the Phils would choose to let Rowand walk if they couldn't fit it all in the budget.

Zolecki mentions Mike Lowell as a possibility for the hot corner; that'd run $8-12MM for '08 depending on how you backload it. Lowell seems in line for at least two years, $22MM. Gordon Edes has speculated that it could require a three or four year commitment. The Phillies at least fall under the teams on Lowell's list, it appears.

The other $10MM or so might all have to go toward a starting pitcher. The Phillies have Jamie Moyer, Adam Eaton, Cole Hamels, and Kyle Kendrick locked in. If the Phils don't like the free agent market (they had interest in reacquiring Carlos Silva this summer), they could pursue Jon Garland or Dontrelle Willis via trade. The Phils have also scouted Anthony Reyes.

I think Zolecki is low on his $20 million estimate because he isn't factoring in an increase in payroll.

But hmmmm....I am pretty much right on the money.

D-TRAIN SEEMS 2 B THE ONE 2 GET! MY ONLY CONCERN IS THAT WHEN WE PLAY THEM HE SEEMS 2 GET PRETTY AMPED, IS THERE SOME KIND OF BEEF CUZ IF NOT I THINK HE WOULD SOLIDIFY THE PITCHING STAFF LEAVING MONEY FOR LOWELL AND POSSIBLY RESIGNING ROWAND, ALSO GOING AFT CURT FOR ONE YEAR

How much are the hot dogs, soda, etc at the park and look at those salaries and ask yourself are those guys really worth the money.
The owners, players, and media are taking the joy and fun out of the game

i heard that phils still had to eat another 5.5 million on thome's contract this year

so the 20 million is in line

they could try a trade, you know phils can move homeplate back, the outfield lines would be like boston but i am sure they could move back 10-15 feet and make park more pitcher friendly to attract pitchers

they do owe Thome 5.5....this is the last year. That contract is a real killer.

I still think we'll be in the $105 million range which would still leave approx. $25 mil to spend.

I would not be surprised to see them go after a closer and Schilling and then go after a lesser 3rd baseman like Crede or Koskie, who are both coming off injury.

Rollins made 8 million in 2007, how do you figure he is getting a 100k pay cut? Check out the 2007 salaries on espn.com because you have a few other players getting pay cuts as well. Good work, this is interesting stuff that should keep people talking and analyzing during the hot stove period.

My bad I mean 1 milllion pay cut for J roll. Gordon, Moyer, Helms, Victorino and a few others look like they would be getting pay cuts as well. Where can you get 2008 salary info for players?

The discrepancy was bonuses.
JRoll 8 mil
Eaton 7,968,333
Moyer 6 mil
Myers 8,583,333
Chase 7,785,714
Helms 2.4 mil
Romero about 4 mil
Mateo buyout for 100k or 1.5mil salary
Also they owe Thome 5.5 mil

Lidge made 5.35 mil last year

They have about 70 mil already committed if they buyout Mateo.

There are others like the ones that are mentioned in the beginning of this post as well

SP - Cole Hamels - 1 million
SP - Kyle Kendrick - 400 K
RP - Mike Zagurski - 400 K
RP - Matt Smith - 400 K
RP - Scott Mathieson - 400 K
OF - Michael Bourn - 400 K
OF - Gregg Dobbs - 400 K
OF - Shane Victorino - 400 K
C - Carlos Ruiz - 400 K

I am making some assumptions here. The second list of players that you mention are all the property of the Phillies. They can be renewed at the minimum for their level of service. I used 400K as the average because it sits right in the middle of the major league minimum and a super 2's salary.

I am also thinking Hamels gets renewed at more than the minimum, somehwat like Howard in 2007.

I did not factor in bonuses in any of these numbers.

You get the point....my numbers are very close.

I think they keep Mateo...he's a low risk guy to keep and he's probably a better option than some of the guys being mentioned as the last man in the pen right now.
