Neighbor Surprises Suspected Burglars With Shotgun Blast, Ties Them Up For Police

POSTED: 2:23 pm EST January 5, 2007

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Two suspected burglars in Daytona Beach were beaten and tied up by homeowners after a shotgun-wielding neighbor noticed a brawl and jumped to action, according to a Local 6 News report.

Investigators said William Aviles and his brother broke into some homes at the Silverton apartments located on Silver Beach Avenue in Daytona Beach Friday.

Some homeowners walked in on the men in their homes, and a fight ensued.

"Sterling Moore fired off a warning shot into the air, startling the burglars who were involved in an all-out brawl with homeowners who caught them in the act," Local 6's Tarik Minor said. "These burglars picked the wrong group of guys to rob. First, these burglars got beat up and then they were tied up with zip ties."

Neighbor Sterling Moore said he did not have time to call police.

"I didn't know who the people were," Moore said. "I didn't know what they were doing. I didn't know what they had -- knives, guns or anything. My best buddy was being attacked on the stairs. I didn't have time to call the police. I grabbed a shotgun and shot one off into the air. It scared them. They froze, and they stopped. I got the zip ties out of my toolbox and zip-tied them. Everyone is safe, and I neutralized the problem."

The homeowners said their hearts were racing as they found the intruders inside their apartments, Minor said.

Police said the suspected burglars were after electronics, jewelry and other items.

One of the suspected burglars threatened the homeowners as he was being hauled away to the Volusia County Jail.

"I bet you I'll be back," Aviles said. "I bet you I'll be back. I bet you I'll be back. I'll be back. I'm going to blow a hole in you."

The brothers face burglary and assault charges.

In case you couldn't hear my whooo-hoooo at the time the story aired......WHOOOOOO-HOOOOOO! That is what I call a GOOD neighbor.

Can you call your neighbor your 'best buddy'? Do you even know their names? In times like these, your neighbors may be the only ones you can count on to come to your aid when you need it most. Smile, say hello-even just a nod will do. Something to think about.

We are fortunate to have good neighbors like that (across the street). If our dogs bark too much while we're not home, they come over, armed, and check it out! We do the same for them, too! Maybe those homowners should think about arming themselves?
