I just had a thought that sounds like a great idea. If all the UAW members and auto manufacterers managment were to take a manditory 25% cut in salaries, that would bail out the entire industry in a heartbeat. Everybody knows they earn far too much for what little work they do, so why not help themselves keep their jobs instead of having the rest of the country kick in to help them. I'm sure many factory worker in a Michigan auto plant is earning well over $100,000 per year for a job that should pay far less. This would help the country and the auto industry by lowering the prices of new vehicles and keep the factories open and functioning. The pension plans also are out of control because of the lobbying from the UAW. There is not much that can be done now about those who have already retired, but effective say 5 years down the road, those retirement plans need to be changed to a more realistic level. (I worked long hard years as a firefighter with an excellent retirement plan but it is not even close to what those UAW retirees recieve) I am not at all jealous, I just feel it is way way to high and that is also contributing to their downfall.                     Just my thoughts, any ideas??

I've said it before, "Unions, destroying America one company at a time!" Many businesses have gone overseas for 2 reasons: First, high taxes (the Dems LOVE to tax business) and second, unions!! $60 an hour to watch a robot attach a rear bumper???? Over a million their heathcare provider has paid for Viagra for employees!!! Give me a break!!

Also, don't forget the Democrats have been in bed with the unions forever!!! It's now payback time for all those votes!!

First UAW bailout, next forced union shops. The secret ballot to vote for unionization will soon be a thing of the past. You will have a public vote, and union officials will be there to twist arms (or break legs)!!

Get rid of the Unions and most of the problems would right themselves. There salarys make up 10% of the cost of the car. Lower there wages from 75 an hour to about 40 and hour and they might be able to make some money. I will say when the unions started they were a good thing but now they are just corupt people.

Dawg, as usual they take a good thing and squeeze the life out of it in order to benefit the few at the top and in so doing ruin the whole darned thing.

OV: your right about that. The Unions were started because of the child labor that was previlent back then. After a few years the bosses saw they could make a bunch of bucks off other peoples labour and that is when they went to hell.

The unions back in the day were useful but as everyone else they got greedy. The unions want a pay raise so their members can make a deceint living but then the greedier management raise the prices so their profits keep going up. So dont blame the unions only its the management of these big corporations that cause the real problem.

As far as the bailout, our government in its inifinite stupidity will give the money to the wrong people. If the government were half as smart as they want to believe then give the money to the general public so we have money to spend. Once the consumer starts spending the maybe the economy would get better. To give money to a dying company because their sales are down will only prolong the innevetable.

The unions and the top management are trying to get a bail-out, so why not offer a bail-out only if both top management and the union are eliminated in favor of all new top management? After all, both the union and top management are responsible for the mess.
