It has come to nationwide attention that the ACLU has decided to start a lawsuit to stop Florida's plans to introduce a new cross design onto its custom designed license plates. Like many states which offer a variety of choices for themed license plates, Florida has chosen to offer its motorists a Cross on some of the choices for its plates. However, the ACLU has decided to step in, and sue the state of Florida to prevent this plate from ever being available to the motorists, stating that it violates the separation of church and state. Proponents for this plate say that it is merely offering more choices for motorists, and that Florida is not endorsing any religion as an official religion of the State.

Where do you Tampa Bay Florida residents stand on this issue?

I love the X-Ray Plate!!  Fantastic!

But, it is no surprise that the ANTI CHRISTIAN LAWYERS UNION would take action.  I wish they would go after the Counsel on American Islamic Relations with the same energy.  I would be a happy spectator, probably enthusiastically cheering the Islamists, for a change.

I just returned from a mental institution (solitary housing with restraints) because of this issue. I hadn't slept for 6 weeks and went off the deep end. I was totally obsessed with this very important issue, so much that I lost it.

Sorry about the satire. Making a big deal of something so trivial in these perilous times brings out the worst in me. License plates. Right. Who cares?

And no small wonder. It seems that nothing is sacred for you.

But, for some with deeply held beliefs, such is an afront.

Right you are! I doubt there are many folks more religious than I am, but sacred? Seems like comparing license plates to insulting Islam. It's time for folks to calm down about trivial things and start working on tolerance. It's just not a big deal, and shouldn't be. There's always someone pissed off about something.

Interesting; only 2 bloggers have responded here so far. I have more bloggers responding on MyFoxOrlando. One thought went through my mind when I first wrote the blog: Why is the ACLU wasting tax money to brainwash the public into forgetting about their freedom of expression and freedom to worship as they please?

After the license plate with the cross, where would it stop? How many religious symbols would you allow?
I think the state of Florida is going overboard on the variety of tags. Why not just go back to the numbers and letters? People should just give to the church, charity, or organization of their choice. Why let the government get their hands on your money?

Very interesting points everyone! The issue I'm concerned with is this: the usurping of our rights by the American Civil Liberties Usurpers. Earlier this year, they went against the will of New Jersey voters by helping "Jerkey Boy" Governor Jon Corzine abolish the Death Penalty. ACLU's John Holdridge is the weasel behind this move...I wonder if he is the weasel behind this plate controversy as well. I thought you guys should have this heads up, in case you watch AMW, and find a former death row inmate escaping from New Jersey into your neck of the woods. Toss some rotten oranges at the ACLU and run them out of town!

ACLU..........Jeez what a group, They will defend the Nazis the Islamist, murderers,
rapists, damn near anyone we "normal" people would support lynching at dawn.

Oh yeah thats exactly what our Constitution Does isn't it. ............ Most of the time I hate the ACLU,what it does, and the causes it champions, but at no time have I ever been prepared to see it disbanded.

Precisely because it takes up the defense of unpopular causes, precisely because it does the things I hate about it, It has earned my fullest intellectual respect even as it earns my emotional contempt.

If it did not exist we would demand someone start it.

LQQKING...

You can't say Lynching anymore...it's racist.
I think the ACLU did that too.

Any way, I think that if you wanna shell out a few extra bucks for Jesus on your plate, that's your business and your money is just as green as anyone else's.

As far as "Where does it stop?"
That is absolutely a good question. We are taught to be 'tolerant' now, that's the buzz word that's been going around for several years.

We are to be tolerant of Gay people, we are to be tolerant of illegal immigrants, we are to be tolerant of radical Islam, we are to be tolerant of everything and everyone. Well when is someone going to be tolerant of regular old fashion Catholic/Christian beliefs? It seems that they are asked to be sacrificed for everyone else's tolerance.

I personally don't have a problem with gay people or Islam (unless they want to kill me) or atheists... but when not 'infringing on someone else's rights' becomes an infringement on your own, that's just wrong.

Maybe if parents actually TAUGHT their children some MANNERS (oOOo there's a word that hasn't been around in a while) there would be less need for all this frivolous legislation. A little RESPECT for others and their beliefs goes a long way.

Don't shove tolerance or religion down people's throats, it's a big brick doesn't tend to go down easily or taste very nice.

I have to side with the ACLU on this one. It pains me to say that but if you let a cross on the plates then i want a picture of Alah on my plate to show support for my islamic brothers at CAIR. NOT!!!
If you open the door to one religion then you have to open it to all.
Sorry but if you want to prase god the put a fish or a jesus is my co pilot bumper sticker on.

I never side with the American Civil LUNACIES Union on much of anything. If the Muslims want to put out a Cressent or some symbol of their faith on a license plate, I would have no objections, as long as I could have my cross on mine. Go ahead and open that door. The problem is that we Christians don't have the freedom to publicly declare their faith without the ACLU infringing on our Constitutional rights to free speech and exercise of religion.

I'm a life long North Orange County California resident. I work behind the scenes in radio, and I understand the pressures that the folks at Fox 11 and My 13 news go through to do a live show professionally. I don't like it when politicians try to make our government bigger than it is now. I oppose many of the things the Democrats are doing, because in my thoughts, they are selling out the public to nothing but garbage. In other areas, I'm an Anaheim Angels fan.
