Do Facts Matter? Not to Democrats by Thomas Sowell October 03, 2008
Abraham Lincoln said, "You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time."

Unfortunately, the future of this country, as well as the fate of the Western world, depends on how many people can be fooled on election day, just a few weeks from now.

Right now, the polls indicate that a whole lot of the people are being fooled a whole lot of the time.

The current financial bailout crisis has propelled Barack Obama back into a substantial lead over John McCain-- which is astonishing --in view of which man and which party has had the most to do with bringing on this crisis.

It raises the question: Do facts matter? Or is Obama's rhetoric and the media's spin enough to make facts irrelevant?

Fact Number One: It was liberal Democrats, led by Senator Christopher Dodd and Congressman Barney Frank, who for years-- including the present year-- denied that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were taking big
risks that could lead to a financial crisis.

It was Senator Dodd, Congressman Frank and other liberal Democrats who for years refused requests from the Bush administration to set up an agency to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

It was liberal Democrats, again led by Dodd and Frank, who for years pushed for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to go even further in promoting subprime mortgage loans, which are at the heart of today's financial crisis.

Alan Greenspan warned them four years ago. So did the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to the President. So did Bush's Secretary of the Treasury, five years ago.

Yet, today, what are we hearing? That it was the Bush administration "right-wing ideology" of "de-regulation" that set the stage for the financial crisis. Do facts matter?

We also hear that it is the free market that is to blame. But the facts show that it was the government that pressured financial institutions in general to lend to subprime borrowers, with such things as the Community Reinvestment Act and, later, threats of legal action by then Attorney General Janet Reno if the feds did not like the statistics on who was getting loans and who wasn't.

Is that the free market? Or do facts not matter?

Then there is the question of being against the "greed" of CEOs and for "the people." Franklin Raines made $90 million while he was head of Fannie Mae and mismanaging that institution into crisis.

Who in Congress defended Franklin Raines? Liberal Democrats, including Maxine Waters and the Congressional Black Caucus, at least one of whom referred to the "lynching" of Raines, as if it was racist to hold him to the same standard as white CEOs.

Even after he was deposed as head of Fannie Mae, Franklin Raines was consulted this year by the Obama campaign for his advice on housing!

The Washington Post criticized the McCain campaign for calling Raines an adviser to Obama, even though that fact was reported in the Washington Post itself on July 16th. The technicality and the spin here is that Raines is not officially listed as an adviser. But someone who advises is an adviser, whether or not his name appears on a letterhead.

The tie between Barack Obama and Franklin Raines is not all one-way. Obama has been the second-largest recipient of Fannie Mae's financial contributions, right after Senator Christopher Dodd.

But ties between Obama and Raines? Not if you read the mainstream media.

Facts don't matter much politically if they are not reported.

The media alone are not alone in keeping the facts from the public. Republicans, for reasons unknown, don't seem to know what it is to counter-attack. They deserve to lose.

But the country does not deserve to be put in the hands of a glib and cocky know-it-all, who has accomplished absolutely nothing beyond the advancement of his own career with rhetoric, and who has for years allied himself with a succession of people who have openly expressed their hatred of America.

America isn't ready for a Black president. The only reason Obama is ahead is because he's manipulating the homeless and promoting voter fraud with his buddies in ACORN.
Look at Philly. We have corrupt Black politicians and staffers stealing money. A white man will get fired, a black woman gets a pass because she's sleeping with her boss. Goode Jr., Latrice, Milton Street, and others have plagued this city.
We can't let a Black man handle trillions of dollars. He has given us a preview of what he'll do. He'll pass a bill with alot of pork for ACORN. Wasn't that part of the issue why the first bill didn't go through?

Stop hating zplt. A black man can run this country just as well as a white man. You're the first to holler racism when a black person speaks of Sen. Obama. But we all know who the real racist are.
We have a retarded man in office now, why can't we have a black man. Is he not smart enough? You know darn well he is. Does he have good judgment. Darn right!!! Sen. Obama will be just as good as any white president of this United States. I hope he won't be as bad as many of the white presidents of the United States.
Remember one thing, Sen. Obama has white blood just as yours running through his veins.

Don't start talking about corruption in the black community. Don't let me get started with Sen. Stevens and the list goes on...Corruption runs all through our government, both black and white politicians.

What exact proof is there with ACORN? Is it because ACORN was able to register thousands of minorities and the republicans registration has dropped tremendously.

Like I said, stop hating. Judge a man for himself not because of the color of his skin. You voted for George Bush and look how things turned out. Maybe you should of judged a man by his brains when you voted for Bush in "00 and "04.

Obama's good judgement puts him in bed with Ayers. Let's see. Michelle Obama worked in the same law firm that Bill Ayers worked at. It's a coincidence that Barack met and worked with Michelle in the same law firm. There was restrictions on Ayers' wife practicing law due to her criminal career. Barack knew nothing? I find it hard to believe.
Whites are corrupt as Black. Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Frank Rizzo, Nancy Pelosi, and many others.
Proof of voter fraud with ACORN. FBI just confiscated records with people registered under the same name with different addresses and social security numbers (about 10 times). ACORN hires convicted felons and homeless to sign people up. These recruiters are paid per application. Do you really trust convicted felons with your personal information? ACORN has exploited the homeless. ACORN is using taxpayers money to do this. ACORN gets 4% of all transactions from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae towards housing which they funnel that money to pay and award corruption.
I didn't vote for George Bush. I'm a Democrat who supported both Bill and Hillary. Shocking as it may be to you (mommareenie) I'm a minority business owner. I employee Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites.
Where is the equality? I'm just stating the facts. A White man got disciplined harshly for going home and running errands on company time. Latrice gets paid to sex up her boss and be a lazy thief. With her salary, you can hire 3 people given what she does. Which appears to be nothing.
Educate yourself on who Barack Obama truly is. Biden isn't all that holy either with his state being a

It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with race !!!

It has to do with what has made this country great..CAPITALISM !!!

Barrack is a Marxist, it is what it is.

If Michael Steele was running for president, I would vote for him in a minute. But Obama is a socialist and I would rather fight and die, than vote for that.

Ladders, sorry, you're wrong. This election has everything to do with race. If you're a black voter, you're going to vote for Hussien based on skin color.....the fact that Barry will drown the low income with grant, entitlement, endowments, welfare and a whole slew of social programs is just the icing on the cake. There is no other reason to vote for Hussien, he has no record one could vote on. The only folks voting for Mugomba are the "rich, elite guilt ridden white/black Liberals" and the urban working class folks who believe their entitled.

Our beautiful soon to be Vice President Sarah Palin is also would be better at leading our nation in the future after a McCain Presidency than Senator Barak Obama would be in leading our nation in the future starting in January 2009 because of three areas which are as follows: ideology , experience, and accomplisments. Ideologically she is a conservative. Experientially she has two years of executive administrative governing experience . When it comes to accomplishments she accomplished 3 major things which are as follows: government reform, the state budget and the economy, and wise use of natural resources. She reformed government by standing up to the big oil companies by breaking up the monopoly on power and resources. She insisted on competition and basic fairness which ended the control that the oil companies had on the state, and thereby returning control of the state back to the people. She lead well in the state budget by generating a surplus which came about by vetoing a half billion dollars of wasteful spending. Economically under her leadership she brought about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. She also suspended the state fuel tax, and when oil and gas prices went up dramatically, and filled up the state treasury, she sent a large share of that revenue back where it belonged - directly to the people of Alaska . On natural resources she has shown great leadership by beginning a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence, so please vote John McCain for President

We should all stop using race as reasons for gains and poor behavior. Most times it is the acts of individuals and not the entire race that create issues. The initial spark is at the individual level and it is the group of extremists that use a color (white or black in this election) to try and forward their agenda. Oprah, Mayor Nutter, Beyonnce, Whoppie, and my mailman are all black and successfully secured a comfortable lifestyle. We all have the same public school system and it was good enough to get Barak a chance to attend the finest school in the country - Harvard. Unfortunately, even Barak used race as a stepping-stone. In Chicago he targeted poor black families - he moved there specifically for that reason. At Harvard he protested that there were too many whites and not enough blacks - but he was there. He attended a church for years that fostered hatred towards white people. He runs as the first black president and came out of a white woman who had no blacks in his family life as he grew up. While running for president he made sure to make a white family commercial with extra light in his face to lighten his skin. How can we get passed this color issue when the person running for president uses it? He has been struggling his whole life to reach a black identity and is ignoring his white heritage completely. We know his father came from Africa, but where did mom come from? How about someone telling us the deep story of the white mother's background and the struggles of the country of her family’s origin? Sounds like it is quite one sided and that is why people think
