My parents still live in the house I grew up in, and they have voted at the same location, Beverly Hills Park, since that poll has opened.  And not ONE time has that poll ever been as crowded as it was Tuesday.  They had to park almost a quarter of a mile away, and walking to the center, they passed a woman returning to her car.  She was on a cell phone, and talking loud enough for my parents to overhear.  (Plus my mom is nosy.  I get it from her, what can I say?)   She said, and I quote...

"Fine, you vote for that jerk, and you may as well pack your bags cause your headed right back to Iraq!!"  and clicked the phone shut.

She made eye contact with my mom and said, "You heard that?"  Mom nodded, and apologized for being nosy.  Woman didn't mind.  Turns out, she's married to a soldier, who has only been home from Iraq for six months.

She voted for Barack.  Hmm. Wonder who her husband is voting for?

Mlk1of3,

He probably was supporting McCain.

Interesting to note that McCain has softened his position on how long US forces will remain in Iraq, if he becomes president.

I believe the Democratic presidential nominee will end up caving on any commitment to pull all American forces out of Iraq by the end of 2009.

No president will yank all the troops out, as long as military brass say we need to remain there.

And we already know the top commander believes we need to be there several more years.

Well that should tell you something. If a soldier that has been in Iraq, believes that there presence there is worth it, and is willing to have a president that backs the military's decision to stay, who should you listen to?

Well, considering my husband is a vet, my father is a vet, my brother in law is an air force vet who served in the first Iraq war (1991) and they are all for Obama, well, this tells me her soldier husband is still under the influence of his commander in chief who, unless I'm mistaken, endorsed McCain.

You are not mistaken... Bush did endorse McCain.
The first Iraq war.. the one that lasted less than two weeks? Not exactly what I had in mind. Your husband and father...vets of foreign wars, or just was in the military?

Husband was just in the military. Granddad, WWII, (my grandmothers first husband died in Pearl Harbor) Dad..Cuban Missile Crisis, Uncles (3), Vietnam.. BUT... I have two brothers in law on my husbands side. One served in the army, was career, and spent most of the past 15-20 years in the Middle East.

My other BIL, also career, is still on active duty in the Air Force. He received a special commendation from W himself two years ago for his performance above and beyond the call of duty for a special ops action in Afghanistan.
Both of them still can't tell me why we're in Iraq, beyond the "Because our boss (Bush) told us to go. We aren't supposed to question why, we go where we're ordered and do what we're ordered to do."

Well Mik, you seem to be in a family with a LONG history of military life. Can I ask... What is a military for, if not for war? And if the threat of war exists (always has, always will), why would you want to denounce those that have secured a way of life for you?
Not bashing, just curious.

There's a big difference between defending your country, and invading someone else's. I didn't like Operation Desert Shield, although I did understand it, and I respected Bush 41 for doing what he promised to do..liberating Kuwait and then getting the heck out of there.
But invading a country just to remove its leader? No. We are a country with our own problems, and no one named us the world police except ourselves.
A country that wants its freedom needs to fight for it, just like our forefathers did.
Otherwise, they will not appreciate it like we do.

Well we weren't the only country to go in there with military presence, so I think your "World Police" statement is unfounded

No, we asked people to help us. I think the word for them is "enablers". We have a history of sticking our nose where it doesn't belong, (Vietnam, Korea) when it should stay focused on our own issues.

and France and England... wait, those people thanked us for the fact that they aren't speaking German right now. No, those other countries have minds of their own, and if they thought that the war was such a BAD idea, they never would have gone in (like France)

Well, if I remember correctly, those same countries were cursing us before Pearl Harbor because we refused to fight their battles for them. When Japan hit us (not Germany, JAPAN) then we realized how serious the problem had become, and we stepped in and helped those countries out. JAPAN brought us into WWII, NOT Hitler.
So basically, you reinforced my point. Those countries fought and fought and were losing..until WE stepped in and HELPED them. Helping a country is NOT invading it, which is what we did in Iraq.

well that is a direct contradiction to what you said about vietnam and korea, and I was talking about WWI not 2. I was talking about Hitler, not Japan. Now define help, because the peoples republic of Vietnam ASKED the US to help, and we did. Korea asked us to help, and we did. Kuwait, Grenada... the list goes on. I might add that in the two other wars you mentioned, that thousands more casualties were had than what we've had in Iraq.

Oh, besides that... We were already fighting the Germans in the war the Japan bombed us at Pearl Harbour. Blitzkrieg ring any bells?

What is a direct contradiction? Vietnam asked, but they were involved in a CIVIL war, so while one "country" asked for our help, the other one did not, and they couldn't tell who was who and which was which...a LOT like Iraq now.
WWI I am horribly ignorant about, except for the fact is was called the war to end all wars; which is probably why we didn't do anything about Hitler till AFTER Japan hit us. Japan hit us first, and it opened our eyes to how badly the war in Europe was going on and told us that France and England really did need our help.
So perhaps I should revise my statement to internal skirmishes, civil wars should not concern us. Problems countries are having within their own borders should not concern us. We should practice the same restraint we show towards Africa and its horrible problems.
Kuwait was invaded, and asked us for help. They weren't part of Iraq, and they were too small to drive the Iraqis out. Plus, I think Israel asked us for a little help as well, as if I remember correctly, Hussein was going to try to hit Israel once he got set up in Kuwait. (I may be wrong, but I remember the Scuds being fired at Is and the Patriot missiles blowing the Scuds up on TV. Way cool.) Also, Saudi Arabia was pretty nervous about Iraq being so close and asked for help. Three countries, not allies at all, asking us for help in driving an invading army back to its borders, and giving the country it's borders back, versus destroying going in just to destroy a gov't?

No Sweat Mik... I blundered too. What I meant to say was that we were just running protection for the British navy, which put us in skirmishes with the Germans. Until Japan bombed us, we were pretty much neutral, so you are right... Japan pretty much brought us into the war.
So my hope is that we can bring home most of our boys and girls, and let the Iraqi's police their own nation. Thanks for the banter, I enjoyed it.
