Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

I was wondering what all of you think of this quote by Thomas Jefferson.

Was he right on or full of it.

Me, I think he was right on the money!

Looked this up for some reason. Turns out it might not be a quote of Jeffersons. Historians are up in the air about it. Although to me it sounds like something he might have said.

Tom , that quote is not from Thomas Jefferson its been misquoted by the socialist liberal demo-rats. The quote is from Dorothy Hewill Hutchinson,A pacifist, who was against World War II called the war immoral. She ,herself was very good at ignoring people who didn`t agree with her...

I googled it before I saw your post. Seems some say it was by Hutchinson and others by Zinn. And some say it was by Jefferson. Who knows I guess.
But the question still stands. Is dissent the highest form of patriotism. To me it means we question our leaders and their motives. We should not follow them blindly bah bahing along the way.

And careful now. I am a registered Democrat. Not all nof us are socialists. Of course according to the far right you are a socialist if you support anyone to the left of Rush!

Hey Tom - what's up? I don't know anything about such a quote but believe whatever you say.

I'll have to do some research on the issue later this evening since the Cardinals won't be losing tonight.

I like your comment on Rush and how correct you are!

I guess if you dissent in way our Founding Fathers did with the Declaration of Independence ,with the bold signature of Thomas Jefferson and not hide behind the laws that you are dissent from ,I will agree with you...And Tom I think you are a Democrat- Republican just like Thomas Jefferson .You are one of a few who signs their real name. Hows that for covering my butt.. Hey, wait a minute
thats why I don`t like Obama .....

..The Union party

You may be right bud. I have NEVER voted the party line. I see myself more as an Independant voter. I have an obsession with finding out what the candidate really stands for. Most of the time I end up frustrated because they are mostly full of feces.
Dang, I miss Ronnie raygun!

Regardless of who said it, I think the quote rings true.

Real nice sound bite. Dissent against the best interests of your country does not seem very patriotic to me. Had you said," my country---right or wrong----my country." Good sound bite and definite patriotic. Dissent against ones own country or it's leaders during war time is by no stretch of the imagination anything close to patriotic. It may even be morally correct. Not, no way, no how, patriotic.

Dissent as in disagreement with the status quo.
Not as in insurrection. Although we were formed due to insurrection. And it is our country, and it is up to us to keep our government in line, and doing what We The People know is correct.

Well although it's up there I don't agree that it is the highest form of Patriotism...... If you go to JB cemetary and look at a tombstone that says Killed in Action and you have to think that is nothing can top the patriotic deed of laying down your life for your country..... But then again dissent might mean having to lay down your life.......

Yes Tommy, I agree with you. Sacraficing ones life or the willingness to do so is up there also, maybe even #1. Of course, with me that might sound self serving.
I think that dissent, in the form of changing what one perceives as a wrong is the greatest form of patriotism though. After all, is that not what our founding fathers did.

I don't care if it was George Jefferson, it' a good quote.
May not be the highest form, but was probably spoken it peacetime.
Another higher form may be political service to the country, giving up a more abundant life of opportunity to give service in Congress. Too many seek Congress to gain an abundance.
I believe JFK personified the former, though he was not without his faults.
Gives reason to wait on others to prove themselves, before electing them 'past their paygrade' so to speak.

A C-130 was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by.
The jet jockey decided to show off. The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, 'watch this!' and promptly Went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then finished With a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot Asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?
The C-130 pilot said, 'That was impressive, but watch this!'
The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130
Pilot came back on and said: 'What did you think of that?'
Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, 'What did you do?'
The C-130 pilot chuckled. 'I stood up, stretched my legs, walked To the back, went to the bathroom, then got a cup of coffee and a Cinnamon bun.'
When you are young & foolish - speed & flash may seem a good thing
When you get older & smarter - comfort & dull is not such a bad thing.

Good one. We loadmasters used to have one similar. When the Hercules pilot called the Falcon pilot he said Can you do that again? My Loadmaster was in the John and did not see it!

Also bud, I resemble that remark. I like comfort and dull. Don't know about the smarter part, but I have the older part down pat!
