1992 was not the first time black communities have had riots.  New grocery stores have opened since the riots yet  many other retailers have closed and manufacturing firms that paid middle-class salaries,  have vacated as they have from other cities.
when a  business community is destroyed overnight it does not reestablish if the customer market does not exist.  look at  riots in black neighborhoods in 1967  in many ciites (Detroit, Newark and thirty-eight other cities experienced outbreaks.  Similar riots occurred on the night of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, when over 110 cities erupted.)  there is no reason to complain that no one has rebuilt on lots which now are empty.  the economic incentive does not exist; there is no tenant demand for renting sites to open business. no one sees a financial incentive to locate in those areas.  even  neighborhoods which did not experience riots, but endure changing neighborhood demographics, experience many retail businesses closing.  think about it, if you open a business, whom do you envision as your customers?  do you want to cater to the neighborhood? Latinos are a growing presence in south Los Angeles, an area that was once the center of African American life. Many middle-class black and Latino families have moved out of the area for better schools and safer streets. Those remaining are disproportionately poorer, with fewer job skills.
yes this is prejudice.  green.  Rep Maxine Waters is wrong when she states that if businesses open, the neighborhood residents would be customers.  Wisdom would simply wait for market economics to encourage retail businesses to locate in south Los Angeles.

Exactly, I still think that even 15 years after, there are plenty of bad memories and sad stories about business owners who lost a lot over nothing. It's not like what these rioters were upset about was anything relevant, like the riots in the 60's were.

MY AUNT WAS BOUGHT OUT OF HER HOME WHEN SHE LIVED NEAR PICO & BUNDY YEARS AGO. IT IS OF COURSE NOW PART OF A FREEWAY. SHE MOVED SHE MOVED TO INGLEWOOD. IN 92 SHE CALLED ME AND WAS VERY SAD. SAID SHE COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT THE SAME PLACE FROM THE 60'S RIOT WAS ON FIRE AGAIN AND SHE COULD NOT UNDERSTAND. SEE THAT WAS ALSO THE DAY I HAD BURIED MY TEENAGE SON AND HAD NOT WATCHED A LOT OF TV. SO THAT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I REMEMBER SEEING. STILL IT WAS BAD. DO I HOPE THAT MY AUNT NEVER HAS TO FEEL LIKE THAT WHERE SHE FEELS AT HOME? YES I DO. FOR OTHER PEOPLE ALSO.

Reading this article reflects a thought I have had since I moved to south L.A. three years ago, except that it's opposite to the opinion of the original writer. I feel south L.A. is getting better, less crime and cleaner streets. I grew up in Koreatown and would never dare to go past Adams Blvd.
Three years ago right before the house price hike many latinos like myself bought a home in south L.A. That brought many educated and middle class latinos. We are the kids of the immigrants from 30 years ago. It is true that many middle class blacks and latinos moved out to places like Palmdale, Lancaster and Moreno Valley with them went their children who were part of the crime in South L.A. A few months ago I read a report in the L.A. Times about the rise of crime in these cities. We still have crime but in a few years it will be even safer. Plus downtown is getting a big face lift.New builings, schools and police stations. That will help improve the communities.
Last Sunday I was in a Health Fair at Normandie Recreation Center and I saw representatives from Costco trying to recruit new customers. I asked myself why? The nearest one is a long drive away. These big stores need to invest in our communities if they want our business. If not, need not to worry the Koreans and Latinos will take advantage of the opportunities.

THERE YOU GO ANOTHER INTELLIGENT RESPONSE. WE MOVED PAST LANCASTER NOT BY CHOICE I AM TRYING TO EXPALIN IN MY BLOG. YOU ARE RIGHT. I ACTUALLY LIVE AND WORK IN KERN CO. I WORK IN MY HOME. WE HAVE TO KEEP THE DOOR LOCKED AT ALL TIMES DUE TO HOME INVASIONS OUR POLICE DEPT DIDN'T FEEL THE NEED TO INFORM US OF. LESS THAN 10,000 PEOPLE YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED HOW WORD WILL GET AROUND. I WAS JUST WAITING FOR MY HUSBAND TO RETIRE AND WE ARE MOVING. MY GRANDKIDS ARE HERE. SO RECENTLY I AM BACK INVOLVED WITH OUR COMMUNITY. BROKE MY BACK AND HAD A FEW SET BACKS BUT I HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN A SAFE PLACE ALSO. WHERE WE LIVE THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE [60,000] ON A 4 DAY WEEKEND WHO COME INTO TOWN JUST TO RIDE ATV'S AND DIRT BIKES IN OUR DESERT.SINCE OUR TOWN HAS SUFFERED DUE TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF IT FOR MONEY. WE ARE GETTING PEOPLE LATINOS A LARGE AMOUNT WHO ARE HERE GIVING US THINGS THAT WE NEED. TO DO GROCERY SHOPPING WE GO TO MOJAVE. WE DO NOT HAVE A DECENT STORE FOR THAT HERE.SO INSTEAD OF FIGHTING OPIMIONS AND IDEAS THAT ARE PRODUCTIVE ARE A GOOD THING.

Chuck, great to learn there are good people moving in! Generally this is called gentrification! It is risky to be early as there is no guarantee more good people will follow! Certainly, as the neighborhood gets more upscale, retailers will seek opportunities to open profitable branches! Do you have an opinion about last week's story in Anaheim. A trailer park will be replaced with possibly apts. Disney does not want apts. I assume Disney would prefer some other use for the site. I did not hear what Disney would prefer!

I was born on a cold winter morning in 1960. When Palestinians began hijacking airplanes forty years ago I was disappointed by the US leadership in dealing with the barbarian habit. I admire President GW Bush for leading US into Iraq. I feel our military forces will be given authorization to rid the barbarians.
