UNITED STATES ATTORNEY'S OFFICE EASTERN DISTRICT OF MISSOURI

June 8, 2007 For Immediate Release

FRANKLIN COUNTY MAN INDICTED FOR SENDING EXTORTION LETTERS TO LOCAL MEDIA

St. Louis, Missouri: David Scott has been indicted for sending threatening communications to two local television stations, United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway and Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke announced today. The federal indictment alleges that the defendant mailed two threatening letters to KPLR TV, CW 11 on April 25 and 28; and one letter to KTVI FOX 2 on April 28. These threats were not made directly against these television stations or their personnel. Scott, 28, of Villa Ridge, Missouri, was indicted by a federal grand jury on three counts of mailing threatening communications with intent to extort.  If convicted, each count carries a maximum penalty of twenty years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. Hanaway commended the work on the case by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.  The charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations, and each defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Leave the poor guy alone, I dont' know anything about the case, but if no one was actually threatened, then no crime was actually committed. And truthfully some of the media stations need to be threatened.

Well I say if someone makes any sort of threat, it SHOULD be handled in a serious manner. Maybe then, some of the actions resulting of such, can be deterred. MANY tragedies could have been diverted had the pre-treats been taken seriously.

And who could be so unintelligent to turn around and do the same thing that he already is being investigated and charged for?!

Man sent threatening letters, indictment says
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
06/09/2007

ST. LOUIS — A Villa Ridge man was indicted Friday by a federal grand jury on charges of mailing threatening letters to two St. Louis television stations, federal prosecutors said.

Prosecutors say David Scott, 28, mailed two threatening letters to KPLR (Channel 11) on April 25 and 28, and one to KTVI (Channel 2) on April 28. At least one of the letters to KPLR was signed with a woman's name, demanding the station pay her $10,000, or she would kill her child, authorities said. The other two letters made similar demands, said Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke.

The 29-year-old woman whose signature appeared in the letter was arrested in April on unrelated traffic charges but later released. Detectives found no evidence that she sent the letters, Toelke said.

Scott and the woman are acquaintances, but "she was not a part of the plot," Toelke said. Investigators performed forensic tests on the letters that led them to Scott, who has confessed to sending the letters, Toelke said.

Scott was charged with three counts of mailing threatening communications with intent to extort. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

This is a very disturbing post now that u have given more of the facts.WOW if is guilty they need to do a mental evaluation of him how sad..And rhrealestate threatening anyone no matter what a persons views are is wrong..The media gets carried away from time to time but threating people is not part of your freedom of speach and should never be done..There are ways to communicate without name calling and threating..But this story is truly sad

No doubt the person who wrote the letters is angry. It does blow my mind that a person can get 20 yrs and be fined an amt of $ that is probably impossible to pay, especially in prison, when no one was hurt by the act. I have been threatened and hit and all the person got was an hour or two in jail. So is the moral, its better to actually hurt someone rather than just say your going to? I also dont understand why someone can tell you they are going to burn your home down and nothing happens because "they have to act on it", but in other cases just the expression of it is enough. Shouldnt prison be for those who really do something that causes harm? And why fine if there is no possible hope of actually getting the $? Do we really think that putting an unstable person in an impossible situation is a good idea?

We don't have any facts that he was unstable. Albeit, anyone who acts in this manner could potentially be precisely that. If you do the crime, you should do the time - bottom line.

If he's unstable then I'm sure the appropriate judge will send him to a mental health institution; opposed to a Federal prison. We won't know the result of that until a diagnosis & conviction has been made.

I find it interesting that there is any amount of sympathy being given towards this man. Threats, of any nature, shouldn't be taken lightly. Perhaps they are using him for an example? Irregardless, he's a grown man and could distinguish right from wrong; unless proven otherwise by a state licensed mental health doctor.

You make your bed...

On a side note, Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke seems to be truly making an impact on his respective jurisdiction this year. Kudos! We need more just like him spread around the remainder of the state.
