Has anyone used the 511 traffic hot line? All you do is call 511 from your cell phone and they give you traffic updates for certain highways.

Is it just for this area or can it be used in other states and such? We do a lot of traveling and at times we get in some really heavy traffic when in certain cities and such.
There is a phone number you can call for assistance in finding ones phone number when using your cell phone without getting a charge like you get when calling information. The number is 1-800-373-3411. The service is actually free when using your cell phone and we happen to stunbble on it when a friend told us about it a few months ago. Regular phone assistance is costly enough but the charges are even more when calling information from your cell phone. We checked the number out on the www.Snopes.com and found it is free of any charges when looking for a number.

Well im hoping my friends at fox can call modot and run a segment on this. I dont have all the answers. I went to www.traffic.com and set up the route i drive to work. now when i call 511 it has my work route programmed in there. i also get text messages every morning and evening telling me what the traffic is like on I-55. I tried to find more info on this online but not having much luck. As far as i know its fairly new. I did find this info on modots page:

The Missouri Department of Transportation has also initiated its new Traffic Information Hotline to help fight congestion and warn area residents when ozone levels reach unhealthy conditions (red air quality forecast days). By dialing (888) 511-4STL (4785) commuters can get real-time information on traffic conditions, traffic crashes, and construction lane closures. The high-tech, voice-activated traffic information hotline is powered by the same database that runs the real-time traffic information website www.gatewayguide.com. Eventually, the toll free number will be converted to 511, a national travel information number, to help make it easier for area residents to access the database.
