As the final games of the NHL and the NBA season slowly yet painfully wind down the fire that fuels the Curse of Billy Penn, a curse which begins to persuade even the most non-superstitious person that perhaps there just might be something to this so-called urban legend. From the most recent attempt by the Eagles in the Super Bowl in 2005 to the Gretzky led Oilers first Cup win over a very young and talented Flyers team in 1985 Philadelphia sports fans havent much to cheer about since then.

For those of you joining in late, the last championship of the four major sports teams occurred in 1983, with the Sixer's - lead by Dr. J and Moses Malone - four game sweep of the L.A. Lakers.  After that championship in March 1987, the skyscrapers of One Liberty Place were completed, eclipsing the top of William Penn's hat as it proudly stood on top of City Hall.  Thus the curse continued with each NBA, NHL, MLB and NFL season ending without the Philadelphia sports fans celebrating as world champions but instead saying to themselves "Maybe next year".

At the beginning of each of the respective seasons, promises are made that this will be the year the curse ends.  Yet every year since 1983 has resulted in the same gut-wrentching, hair pulling, wall punching ( okay I didnt mean for the blog to be violent - let me bring this back to a pre-rambo-esque description ) question asking disappointment.

The Phillies are the next gladiator to take on the "lion" with opening day looming right around the corner.  What do you think sports fans? Can the Phillies be the one that ends this curse?  Or will they put in a valiant effort much like the teams in the past only to fall short of hopeful expectations?  And if not the Phillies, who do YOU think will be the one team of the four major sports to bring us that much needed, much deserved and much overdue parade down Broad St?
