Are Bio-fuels backfiring???

.....And becoming a major contributor to the growing food crisis world wide?
Are we, in our mad rush to save the planet from an upcoming man-made climate disaster, (which, of course, is simply a theory), aiding and abetting a problem that is a proven fact ?
Now, even some in the United Nations ( a strong proponent of Kyoto driven protocols) are beginning to realize the folly of their actions..........
"The reality is that people are dying already," said Jacques Diouf, of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). "Naturally people won't be sitting dying of starvation, they will react," he said.
The UN says it takes 232kg of corn to fill a 50-litre car tank with ethanol. That is enough to feed a child for a year. Last week, the UN predicted "massacres" unless the biofuel policy is halted."
"The world food situation is very serious: we have seen riots in Egypt, Cameroon, Haiti and Burkina Faso," said Mr Diouf. "There is a risk that this unrest will spread in countries where 50pc to 60pc of income goes to food," he said.
Haiti's government fell over the weekend following rice and bean riots. Five died.
Even some in our Government are beginning to realize the severity of this crisis...
Representative Jim McGovern, Democrat of Massachusetts, said he had come to realize that Congress made a mistake in backing biofuels, not anticipating the impact on food costs. He said Congress needed to reconsider its policy, though he acknowledged that would be difficult.
“If there was a secret vote, there is a pretty large number of people who would like to reassess what we are doing,” he said.
One more quote from Mr. Diouf....
Mr Diouf says world grain stocks have fallen to a quarter-century low of 5m tonnes, rations for eight to 12 weeks. America - the world's food superpower - will divert 18pc of its grain output for ethanol this year, chiefly to break dependency on oil imports. It has a 45pc biofuel target for corn by 2015.

Now , there is even talk of cutting down carbon absorbing rain forest in south America to grow crops to meet the ever increasing demand...............ABSURD!
In my opinion, this is a classic example of not 'looking' before you 'leap'. Or, at the very least, making sure you have a reason to 'leap'.
Also, It's food for though (no pun intended) the next time you wonder about the price of groceries, or think about buying that new 'hybrid' vehicle.
BTW......Biofuels are not the sole reason for this crisis, but they are a major contributor.

The following picture is being used by Absolut vodka in an advertising campaign in Mexico...

Check out this clowns quote......
The campaign taps into the national pride of Mexicans, according to Favio Ucedo, creative director of leading Latino advertising agency Grupo Gallegos in the U.S.
Ucedo, who is from Argentina, said: “Mexicans talk about how the Americans stole their land, so this is their way of reclaiming it. It’s very relevant and the Mexicans will love the idea.”
But he said that were the campaign to run in the United States, it might fall flat.
“Many people aren’t going to understand it here. Americans in the East and the North or in the center of the county -- I don’t know if they know much about the history.
“Probably Americans in Texas and California understand perfectly and I don’t know how they’d take it.”

Obviously, there is a lot this guy doesn't know!
Might fall flat in the United States? Duh!
“Probably Americans in Texas and California understand perfectly and I don’t know how they’d take it.”........What! Tell you what pal, make a sign out of this picture, and walk down a street in Texas or California! I think they'd be perfectly willing to tell you what they think! Oh, and good luck getting out in one piece.
Grey goose, here I come!

MISLEADING REPORTS ABOUT ANTARCTICA
By Joseph D’Aleo, CCM
http://icecap.us
Last year when Antarctic set a new record for ice extent, it got no media attention. They focused on the north polar regions where the ice set record low levels. This summer when unprecedented anomalous cover continued in the Southern Hemisphere again no coverage. Then this report in the news today. You probably saw it on your favorite network or internet news site (pick one, anyone).
Vast Antarctic Ice Shelf on Verge of Collapse - Latest Sign of Global Warming’s Impact Shocks Scientists
Andrea Thompson Livescience
Excerpt: A vast ice shelf hanging on by a thin strip looks to be the next chunk to break off from the Antarctic Peninsula, the latest sign of global warming’s impact on Earth’s southernmost continent. Scientists are shocked by the rapid change of events. Glaciologist Ted Scambos of the University of Colorado was monitoring satellite images of the Wilkins Ice Shelf and spotted a huge iceberg measuring 25 miles by 1.5 miles (37 square miles) that appeared to have broken away from the shelf. Scambos alerted colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) that it looked like the entire ice shelf - about 6,180 square miles (about the size of Northern Ireland)- was at risk of collapsing. The region where the Wilkins Ice Shelf lies has experienced unprecedented warming in the past 50 years, with several ice shelves retreating in the past 30 years. Six of these ice shelves have collapsed completely: Prince Gustav Channel, Larsen Inlet, Larsen A, Larsen B, Wordie, Muller and the Jones Ice Shelf. .
Icecap Note: Let’s put this in perspective. The account may be misinterpreted by some as the ice cap or a significant (vast) portion is collapsing. In reality it and all the former shelves that collapsed are small and most near the Antarctic peninsula which sticks well out from Antarctica into the currents and winds of the South Atlantic and lies in a tectonically active region with surface and subsurface active volcanic activity. The vast continent has actually cooled since 1979.
The full Wilkins 6,000 square mile ice shelf is just 0.39% of the current ice sheet (just 0.1% of the extent last September). Only a small portion of it between 1/100th-1/200th of Wilkins has separated so far, like an icicle falling off a snow and ice covered house. And
amazing 60% ahead (4.0 vs 2.5 million square km extent) of last year when it set a new record. The ice extent is already approaching the second highest level for extent since the measurements began by satellite in 1979 and just a few days into the Southern Hemisphere fall season and 6 months ahead of the peak. Wilkins like all the others that temporarily broke up will refreeze soon. We are very likely going to exceed last year’s record. Yet the world is left with the false impression Antarctica’s ice sheet is also starting to disappear.
One Icecap reader calls attention to a new paper (Glasser et al, 2008) identifying some of the other natural processes that can lead to these ice sheet breaks, in this case Larsen B. this winter is coming on quickly. In fact the ice is returning so fast, it is running an amazing 60% ahead (4.0 vs 2.5 million square km extent) of last year when it set a new record.

Funny, is seems there is two sides to every story. When it comes to 'global warming', why do we only heat one of them?
Boycott the summer olympics?

The summer olympics are just around the corner. A time when nations of the world get together and share in the spirit of competition. Many of the athletes who compete in these games dedicate themselves utterly to prepare for these games. It is the culmination of years of hard work and training for them.
This summers games are being held in Beijing China. Due to the recent problems in Tibet, many are calling for a boycott of the games, or, at least the opening ceremonies. I think we can all agree that China doesn't consider human rights a priority while they steamroll into the 21st century. In fact, their record on human rights borders on atrocious.
I'd like to hear your opinions, for example....
Should we boycott the games?
Would enough nations participate in a boycott to make it worth while?
Is it fair to the athletes who have dedicated so much time and energy to preparing for these games?
Personally, I don't think it would do much good. Sure, it would be a financial blow to China, but, China will do as China sees fit, their record on human rights and other issues bear that out.
What do you think?
