..........And becoming a major contributor to the growing food crisis world wide?

Are we, in our mad rush to save the planet from an upcoming man-made climate disaster, (which, of course, is simply a  theory),  aiding and abetting a problem that is a proven fact ?

Now,  even some in the United Nations ( a strong proponent of  Kyoto driven protocols)  are beginning to realize the folly of their actions..........

"The reality is that people are dying already," said Jacques Diouf, of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). "Naturally people won't be sitting dying of starvation, they will react," he said.

The UN says it takes 232kg of corn to fill a 50-litre car tank with ethanol. That is enough to feed a child for a year. Last week, the UN predicted "massacres" unless the biofuel policy is halted."

"The world food situation is very serious: we have seen riots in Egypt, Cameroon, Haiti and Burkina Faso," said Mr Diouf. "There is a risk that this unrest will spread in countries where 50pc to 60pc of income goes to food," he said.

Haiti's government fell over the weekend following rice and bean riots. Five died.

Even some in our Government are beginning to realize the severity of this crisis...

Representative Jim McGovern, Democrat of Massachusetts, said he had come to realize that Congress made a mistake in backing biofuels, not anticipating the impact on food costs. He said Congress needed to reconsider its policy, though he acknowledged that would be difficult.

“If there was a secret vote, there is a pretty large number of people who would like to reassess what we are doing,” he said.

One more quote from Mr. Diouf....

Mr Diouf says world grain stocks have fallen to a quarter-century low of 5m tonnes, rations for eight to 12 weeks. America - the world's food superpower - will divert 18pc of its grain output for ethanol this year, chiefly to break dependency on oil imports. It has a 45pc biofuel target for corn by 2015.
                                 -------------------------------------------------------

Now , there is even talk of  cutting down carbon absorbing rain forest  in south America to grow crops to meet the ever increasing demand...............ABSURD!

In my opinion, this is a classic example of not 'looking' before you 'leap'. Or, at the very least, making sure you have a reason to 'leap'.

Also, It's food for though (no pun intended) the next time you wonder about the price of groceries, or think about buying that  new 'hybrid' vehicle.

BTW......Biofuels are not the sole reason for this crisis, but they are a major contributor.

I hear ya. I am sitting down here in the land of Bio-Diesel surrounded by oil wells and still cringe when I have to put gas in my car. It is just a simple case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. You will either pay at the pumps or at the grocery store. As for the hybrid, in addition to burning food....there isn't enough room in them for my long long legs. If gas prices continue to soar though, I may have to resort to a horse.

Ya better gitcha some long stirrups gurl.

Guns, I'm a member of that 'fringe group' that is in 'denial', who thinks that man made global warming is a hoax, or at the very least, unproven. Maybe thats why this kind of thing aggravates me so much. While I'm all for protecting the environment (from pollution and such) where do we draw the line? Bio-fuels are only the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended there either) as far as some of the 'solutions' these eco-nuts have in mind. Hell, some of quotes and solutions from these people are downright scary, they make Ted Turners latest rant look sane.

BTW....... I like long legs! ;)

Yes bio-fuels are backfiring. It makes no sense to use energy to produce energy, unless they have solved the age old theory about how to change the ratio and gain more fuel through this process than you use. To my knowledge, this is not the case. This is not rocket science.Furthermore, had we solved this conumdrum, the middle east would erupt into WW3.

I agree also in taking care of the environment, but some of these radical tree-huggers are really getting carried away. This is a great post. Biofuels are certainly backfiring. Some day I'll post my views on global warming and I expect a major backlash, but I only post raw proven data.
If it matters, I also like long legs. :)

By the way Jim, I posted a new blog about the new microsoft computer. Have you seen it yet?
