The summer olympics are just around the corner. A time when nations of the world get together and share in the spirit of competition. Many of the athletes who compete in these games dedicate themselves utterly to prepare for these games. It is the culmination of years of hard work and training for them.

This summers games are being held in Beijing China. Due to the recent problems in Tibet, many are calling for a boycott of the games, or, at least the opening ceremonies. I think we can all agree that China doesn't consider human rights a priority while they steamroll into the 21st century. In fact, their record on human rights borders on atrocious.

I'd like to hear your opinions, for example....

Should we boycott the games?

Would enough nations participate in a boycott to make it worth while?

Is it fair to the athletes who have dedicated so much time and energy to preparing for these games?

Personally, I don't think it would do much good. Sure, it would be a financial blow to China, but, China will do as China sees fit, their record on human rights and other issues bear that out.

What do you think?

I honestly don't think a boycott would do a damn bit of difference. Plus with our reputation with the rest of the world, I doubt anyone would follow our lead if we were to be the first to boycott.

As for the financial effects, I don't it would hurt China one way or the other.

And the human rights issue... They've ignored human rights since the dawn of time, Why would anbody think that they'd change their ways now?

These are just some of my thoughts. JMHO

Jim thanks for the info on Vista vs. XP. I don't know the details but I know of 3 companies who have rejected Vista after evaluation so far. Microsoft will get us by the balls when they discontinue support for XP. They know they have the upper hand. Grr!

Newz - I think a boycott would loose china millions, but, they'll survive.

Tom - Exactly what I was wondering. How long will Microsoft continue to support XP? If Vista sales lag, will they try to bully us into Vista by discontinuing XP support?

A statement from the European Union..."Boycotting the XXIX Olympiad is not the right answer to the current political problems," said a statement from Slovenia, which holds the EU's rotating presidency. "A boycott could signify actually losing an opportunity to promote human rights and could, at the same time, cause considerable harm to the population of China as a whole."....

Promoting human rights in China. Worked pretty well so far, hasn't it?

We can't pull another "Jimmy Carter move" without getting some backlash for doing so. There's an Asian honor code that must be tapped if there's going to be a change for the better in China. A boycott would be a big insult to them, and make things worse for those being abused. Something must be done where they can at least save themselves from being embarrassed by the Western nations, even though the Chinese politicians are wrong. This is just a sad truth, and a big challenge to most of the world.

Thanks Mr. E! Very insightful comment.

Personally, I had overlooked the honor code (saving face?) aspect. Perhaps we could use some of that code over here, at least with our politicians.

Again, Thanks for the insight.

Now Pelosi is calling for a boycott of the opening ceremonies. She says to wait and see what other countries are going to do as far as a full boycott goes.

Now thats commitment!

In my opinion China should have never even been considered to host the olympics.

Does anyone know if North Korea is sending
teams to the olympics? they shouldnt be allowed to come if they are. agian that is just my own opinion.
