I was just  curious , How do those of you  running  Vista like it so far ?  Personnaly  , I like to wait a year or so  (or at least till the first service pack comes out , which I heard is due out later this year ) before running any new windows os. I'm perfectly happy with windows xp , but my system is now three years old (which is an eternity in computer years) and will probably get a new computer within the next year , and I'm sure vista will  come pre-installed . I havn't done much research yet , but I'm hearing the usual complaints  and horror stories about Microsuck.... er ...soft . Any comments or info will be appreciated....thanks.

ibejim,

I set up a Vista network a few days ago and am slowly migrating over to it. I am not impressed with it at all. If I may ask, what kind of computer do you have now? I would hold on to the one you have for now. 3 years is not that old considering what has come out in the past 3 years. I run 2 servers at home and one of them is a 6 year old Dell server running Windows 2000, that has only been rebooted twice in 6 years. If yours is working, I'd maybe nuke it, do a clean install and wait until all of the Vista bugs are out.

electrons, thanks for the info. I did nuke & a clean re-install back in december , and it was almost like getting a new pc ! My specs...cpu-p-4 3.0 ghz. ram- 512mb. video- nvidia geforce fx 5200 W/128 mb. sound card- sb audigy 2. mother board- intel 865pe. I guess more ram & a better video card are a no brainer huh ? If you don't mind, what do you dislike the most about your new vista network so far ? Thanks again.

Sounds like you have a very decent machine there. You don't need more RAM :) You will not notice much of a difference moving from 3G to more, unless you work in the INS going through tons of data. I would sit on what you have to be quite honest.

As far as what I do not like, well for one, MS announced that SP1 is coming soon. Here we go! There are LOTS of blogs and reviews of Vista, the most common annoyance is getting drivers to work. The network took some time finding buried networking settings. Every little change brought up a stupid "accept or reject" window, like the MAC vs. PC commercial. It was their band-aid to security flaws in the Windows OS. I'd wait a bit.... Let them get the bugs out like with every new OS. I'd keep the same system you have if you do upgrade. Dell was having some motherboard issues on the Optiplex GX models. Bad capacitors.

Electrons. Sounds like the usual microsoft crap . Getting drivers to work...been down that 8 lane freeway many a time . Oh well I don't want to ramble on about microsoft (good idea for a blog eh?) I may bump up my ram to a gig and get a better video card ( I do play some resource hungry games )cause I think i can do it for about three hundred bucks . anyway thank again , you saved me a lot of research.

I purchased a new laptop for my daughter from Gateway. She has had it for 3 months now and had to do 2 clean installs (took it to Circuit City, since she goes to school on the west coast). Twice Vista has said it needs a new Microsoft password to continue running the upgrade. Only problem it is an OEM Full Version of Vista. Microsoft can't figure it out, Gateway says do a clean install, you should stay with XP or what ever older version you are running. Spend your money on the RAM and video card.

I've heard many horror stories like your daughters. the full version is a huge resource hog "the Aero GUI". Not to mention a lot of problems with windows update on vista. Now microsoft is sneaking files into windows update without letting the user know. Anyway hope your daughter makes out ok...and thanks for the info

SPEAKING OF PUTERS... GOT A SERIOUS QUESTION (REALLY).
YOU KNOW ALL THE UPDATES THAT YOU DOWNLOAD FROM LIKE WINDOWS XP ? OK... CAN THE OLD ONES BE DELETED WITHOUT RISKING SOME HARM/VIRUS TO THE PUTER ? LIKE I HAVE SOME ON HERE FROM LAST YEAR BUT DONT KNOW IF I CAN REMOVE THEM.
ALSO, I THOUGHT COMPAQ PUTERS WERE HORRIFYING UNTIL I CAME INTO HAVING TO USE A GATEWAY. YUK !! LOL ..

I SHOULD HAVE EXPLAINED... SECURITY UPDATES... CAN I REMOVE THE OLD ONES WITHOUT LEAVING THE PUTER OPEN FOR VIRUSES ETC. ?

Don't delete the security updates!!! That's Microsucks somewhat feeble attempt to fight back against hackers and other meanies out there in cyberspace. I would leave them all, Why take a chance?
One of the best things about reformatting/reinstalling,is that when I re-installed XP, I left all that gateway crap off. Gateway ink monitor? HUH?

BTW, happy halloween Noturmama!!!!!

THANKS IBEJIM. I INSTALLED MORE MEMORY IN THIS PIECE OF A PUTER.LOL. ALL THAT GATEWAY STUFF I GOT RID OF WHEN I FIRST TURNED ON THE PUTER. IT WAS AWFUL ! I EVEN ADDED ON MY HP PRINTER..
OH...AND SOMETHING YOU MAY WANT TO BE WARNED ABOUT....NEVER CALL NORTONS/SYMANTEC TECHNICIANS FOR HELP WITH THEIR PRODUCTS. THEY ARE IN INDIA AND HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE DOING !!! SPENT 4 HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH THOSE IDIOTS... FOR SOMETHING I TURNED AROUND AND DOWNLOADED MYSELF IN 5 MINUTES. NEEDLESS TO TELL YOU THAT I ENDED UP CUSSING THEM OUT BIG TIME.... AND THE SUPERVISORS TOO ! THEN THE ADD-ON PACK FOR 2008 DOESNT BLOCK OUT THE POP-UPS AND ADS THAT THEY DID FOR 2007 AND PRIOR... GO FIGURE !

Notur....I quit using norton bloat-ware three years ago, went with AVG FREE, and haven't had a problem since, AVG has a much smaller ram "footprint", doesn't tie-up system resources like norton and updates it's signature files almost daily!
Many software companies out-source their tech-support to India now, I know, It's like banging your head agin' the wall!!

Happy holidays to you and yours also ( If I don't hear from you before) Wish you the best!
