Gun sales up since election

Guns, handguns, NRA, Obama, president

Manager David Hancock holds a Smith & Wesson 500 handgun as he fills out paperwork for the purchase of the gun at the Bob Moates sport shop in Richmond, Va., Thursday, Nov. 6.

Some buyers fear a loss of rights under Obama; others say they're stocking up to prepare for civil unrest.

By Howard Witt
November 12, 2008

Reporting from Houston -- A week after the election of the nation's first black president, gun buyers across the country are flocking to gun stores to stock up on assault rifles, handguns and ammunition.

Some say they are worried that the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama will attempt to re- impose the ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004. Others fear the loss of their right to own handguns. A few say they are preparing to protect themselves in the event of a race war.

But whatever the reason, gun dealers in red and blue states alike say they've never seen anything like the run on weaponry they've been experiencing since election day, surpassing the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"People are terrified of losing their right to protect themselves," said DeWayne Irwin, owner of Cheaper Than Dirt, a large gun store in Fort Worth. "The volume is 10 times what we ever expected. It started with assault rifles, but at this point, people are buying ammunition, high capacity magazines, Glocks -- it's all flying off the shelf.

"With the economy the way it is, people are worried about instability. They are scared of civil unrest."

There are no nationwide figures on gun sales available yet to document a post-election trend, and the number of pre-purchase background checks conducted by the FBI -- a major barometer of national gun sales -- actually rose more slowly through Oct. 31 of this year than during comparable periods in 2007 and 2006.

But anecdotal reports from around the nation suggest the sudden surge of November gun-buying is far surpassing the normal hunting-season spike that often occurs at this time of year.

At the Memorial Shooting Center in Houston, a popular gun store and firing range that shares a building with a church, managers said they sold out their stock of assault weapons a day after the election and are now adding orders, at more than $1,000 each, to a monthlong waiting list.

In Colorado, state authorities said they set a record for background checks on gun purchasers on the Saturday before the election -- and the requests have been growing ever since.

Not every gun enthusiast is so worried. Mark Greene, a hunter and member of Gun Owners for Obama, led a grass-roots campaign for the Democratic nominee in Tarrant County, Texas. Greene said he regarded fears of a looming ban on assault weapons as unfounded.

"People are being pretty reactionary," Greene said. "There's a small contingent of folks in and out of the gun-owning community concerned that Obama's election is such a revolutionary change that it could portend mayhem. I think it's hysteria."

Obama's record on gun rights is conflicting enough to give ammunition to either side.

Obama's campaign website said he "respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms" and promised that he would "protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns."

Seeking to reassure gun owners, Obama told a campaign audience in Ohio in October: "I will not take your shotgun away. I will not take your rifle away. I won't take your handgun away."

But Obama has also said he favors "common sense" gun laws, and as an Illinois state legislator he voted to support a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons and tighter restrictions on all firearms. He has said in the past that he opposes allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons.

The sum of those positions prompted the National Rifle Assn. to warn its members during the campaign that Obama "would be the most anti-gun president in American history."

Obama "says he's in favor of common sense gun laws," Irwin said. "Well, what people up north think is common sense is something different from us down here in Texas. The criminals have all this illegal stuff. I don't want to fight them with a handgun if I can get an AK. I'm entitled to that. I should be able to defend my home."

Witt writes for the Chicago Tribune.

I often wonder, when reading stories like this, if we will recognize the early stages of Civil War II when we see them.

The economy is worsening. Crime rates are up.

20 million illegal aliens roam our streets. Illegal aliens facing a dwindling job market, evaporation of construction jobs, and few prospects. They have also, by and large, demonstrated a significant lack of respect for our Nation’s laws (as well as the fundamental rules of society).

Racial tension is as high as it has ever been.

One perspicacious blogger, whose posts should be required reading for every ObamaZombie, has noted that Obama’s Presidency may not be Constitutional due to his citizenship status, and could actually be decertified by the Electoral College.

(Isn’t Dizzee’s new avitar hot? You’re such a biscuit, Diz...xoxo)

If Obama is not elgible to be President, then it is very, very important that he not be allowed to take office. If he is refused office due to his immigration status, then the ObamaZombies will take to the streets. Count on it. There will be riots, and they won’t be pretty.

The citizenry is arming itself on a historical scale.

People are afraid. The justification (or lack thereof) for their fear is irrelevant. What is important to understand is the fact that scared people make mistakes. Scared people do things that they later regret. Scared people are not always rational.

Some folks will brand the recitation of facts such as these as "fearmongering". Nothing wrong with paying attention to the world around you, I say.

Some folks will also decry the arming of America.

Those folks were probably never Boy Scouts.

I was. See you at the gun shop.

It is about time the american citizens make a statement of we're not gonna take it any more.

I believe it was Patrick henry said an armed society is a polite society. Well the time for politeness might be up.

this is the reasom the us has not had a direct attack from a foreign nation. Insted it is a bunch of lunitics that can't seem to figure out how to fix their own problems without blaming somebody else.

Obama will cater to them and ruin this once proud and great nation. that is if he gets in and is legal.

If he is illegal there still might be riots on the other side, the conservative side of right and wrong. and it will be justified.

Hey, toadie. I kinda figured you'd have an opinion on this one.

Unfortunately, I think our chance to make a statement came and went. 100 million gun owners in the US of A, and if HALF of them had voted last week we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I'm comforted by the fact that 100 million armed Americans and a classified number of military people aren't going to sit by if this Indonesion fella starts any monkey business.

I TRIED to kill that damn intelligent office commercial, ended up blowing a hole through my moniter with my Smith & Wesson 500. Also blew a hole through the brick wall behind it. Oops.

"surpassing the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks?" Wow!!! These folks are afraid, but they're not stupid! And I'm gonna join 'em. I think that Smith & Wesson 500 would make a GREAT addition to my living room! (But I'm probably just gonna get a little somethin' to wear around my ankle instead)

This is a great blog gj! (xoxo)

toadie- LOLOLOL! Oh that poor Rosie, hehe!

I think if bambam has his buddies go bam bam on our doors to take guns a way from the average, law abiding citizen there will be problems. My 80 year old mother-in-law is really upset. I told her maybe get a bow and arrow, and she said she would go on the internet and find a crossbow and arrows. I would not doubt that in a month she shows me her crossbow and then tells me that after research it is better for the environment.

If a little old lady, who might have gotten 1 traffic ticket in her life, but taught troops at Ft. Carson how to shoot when she was younger, is not going to give up her gun I would imagine that there are many others that will not.

I for one certainly will not unless it is lead first. They will then have to pry it from my hands. this country was born with the gun.

We don't let them have ideas. Why would we let them have guns?
Joseph Stalin

Seems to fit the obama mantra.

One man with a gun can control 100 without one.
Vladimir Lenin

Obamas intentions .

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson

I agree with jefferson.

If Vegas had a gimme like that one, I would be there, KRAPT. Tell me you believe that, if Obama's election is nullified, the blacks and other zombies will just sit at home and say "oh, darn."

Tell me you actually believe that, KRAPT. Say it with a straight face, if you can.

Thanks, Diz! I know what you should wear around your ankles...your lucky thong ;)

I think you're right, Caer, my question would be, who is Obamanation going to get to collect all our guns? The cops? Puh-leeze. The military? Speaking for every military person who has ever lived, if this Indonesian guy orders the military to disarm American citizens, he's going to get a big surprise.

I can't speak for toadie, Emmarulz, but I agree with him in that most responsible Americans should strongly consider a means to defend themselves.

I care very little how it would affect the world, as the Second Amendment is an American thing.

No, I dont believe the election will be nullified. Said it with a straight face, J Flush.

The only thing you are clinging to is a conspiracy theory about a birth certificate.

Let's try again, shall we KRAPT? Tell me you believe that, if Obama's election is nullified, the blacks and other zombies will just sit at home and say "oh, darn."

No conspiracy, no theory. Obama has been ordered to produce proof that he is a US citizen. He is ducking the order. Just the facts, ma'am.

Flushman, you are like my ex-girl. She would make up scenarios in which we would end up fighting in order to satisfy her need for drama.

If there was an overturn of the election, a downright disregard for the MAJORITY of voters in this nation.... there would be protests, sure. I can't say if they would be violent or not, neither can you. But you sure like to assume that black folks would instantly get violent. (twice in your comments)
You sir, are obviously full of hatred for Obama due to his race. Hence, you continue to cling to a conspiracy theory and "hope" for "change" in the election results.

you're an effin retart

If old boy can't prove citizenship then the majority vote is moot. Rules is rules.

I'm not a big drama fan, KRAPT, but I remember a drama teacher pointing out that all of life is either tragedy or comedy. This is where I come to see the tragedy.

If I want comedy I'll follow you into the men's room and watch you take a leak.

If they overturn the election, it will not be because of a disregard of the 20% of Americans who voted for Obama, it will be because of a regard for the United States Constitution.

The Constitution is, for now anyway, still a fairly important document to actual Americans. Rules have to be followed. "the majority vote is moot. Rules is rules."

Thanks, Dawg. Well put, bro. Hope things are cool (so to speak) over there.

I'm not really worried about Obama trying to take away my guns, who is he gonna get to do it? The cops? The military? I'd like to see this racist Communist Indonesian fellow TRY to order the military to go out and seize the guns from 100 million Americans. They wouldn't do it. Never.

Godspeed to ya, AlfaDawg, take care of yourself.

Another thing, KRAPT: If the best retort you can come up with is the "Playing of the Race Card", perhaps you should try and debate with someone a little more suited to your intellectual level.

Yes, I do assume that many "protests" would be violent. Remember Rodney King? Are you too young to remember the late 60's? I am, but I can still read and comprehend recent history.

If/when they find out that Obama has "divided loyalties" (lol), they will either A) Ignore the fact, in which case the 80% of Americans who did not vote for Obama will sit at home and say "oh darn", or 2) They will uphold the Constitution and declare him inelgible, in which case many people will take to the streets. If/when it happens, why don'tcha check back with me, k?

I'm a Dad, a construction contractor, a foodie, an artist, and a patriot. I'm also very afraid. I used to live in the United States, but I now reside in latin America (and I never even had to move!). I like to argue current events with facts (along with simple, reasonable human logic). I don't suffer fools gladly, so liberals, please bring your facts (if you have any). I'm a huge Denver sports fan (30 years on the bandwagon), but my favorite teams are, by far, the ones my kids play on.
