300 BILLION BARREL+ OIL RESERVES DISCOVERED IN MIDWEST!

Monday geologists announced the discovery of oil reserves stretching from Nebraska to the Dakotas that are second only to Saudi Arabia.  Enough oil to supply half of America's projected needs for the next one hundred years!  (as reported on CNN)

We can put a man on the Moon, send robotic explorers to Mars, and retrieve artifacts from the TItanic.  The techonlogy exists to safely access these reserves as well as oil reserves in the Cuban Basin where the Chinese are currently drilling with 50 year old technology and recently discovered offshore oil reserves near Lousiana while simultaniously (not instead of, hahnmeister) expanding research and development, without duress, of renewable and alternative fuels.  How long do you suppose Eco-facists and other various tree hugging entities will tie this up as the American economy swirls down the drain on the back of rising fuel costs (and the war)?

We seem to have oil everwhere, now try getting past the EPA and then the people in the communities where the refineries are going to be built. Do that and we are in business. But don't hold your breath. Everybody complains, but nobody wants it in their backyard.

Mr. Basher51 has had a recent blog on this very topic.

The left will argue that drilling more oil is just not an option for two reasons:

1) there is a finite amount oil in any case so it makes sense to get alternatives developed ASAP, (the higher the price the better as this will lead to substitute products being developed more quickly)

2) Global warming......or is it climate change.........it keeps changing......may get hotter in 10 years.........maybe.......or listen to Prince Charles........we have 18 months to dramatically change the world or we ARE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!

Folks of the left wing persuasion have a belief structure on this issue that is "cult like." Logical economic thought such as increasing a domestic supply of oil just is not an option they are willing to consider......under ANY circumstances.

adoseoftruth...regardless of what the left wing and/or Eco-facists beleive, increasing crude oil inventories without the benefit of foreign oil, at least temporarily, is the only sensible thing to do. If we do not, and the American economy collapses there will be no money to develope some unacheiveable, utopian, greenhouse gas free environment. There is such a thing as "responsible use".

Well, you can count out the alternatives to fuel because the politicians won't allow it. They stand to loose alot if we aren't as dependant on that oil. What are they going to have to hold over our heads? Plus the middle eastern countries would be quite ticked if we aren't totally dependant on them too. In the end, it all is going to boil down to politics. And we, the consumers, loose either way.

I'm with ya Garageman. It is absolute INSANITY that we don't drill for more domestic crude............and maybe build a few more refineries.......and maybe, just maybe a few NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS!

Nuclear plants are absolutely insane. I thought so before terrorism, now I know so. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed or die of cancer years from now. And they don't even know where to put the waste. The thought of it being stored on the shore of Lake Michigan also scares me to death.

We need more solar and wind power. But with that too, everybody says, "Not in my backyard."

Scrabler:

Check out France. They are very, very reliant on Nuclear power there and they seem to have no health issues related to radiation and have figured out how to dispose of the waste.

Solar and wind, fine, but the technology doesn't exist to have that resource generate enough power. It can supplement at best.

Our culture is paranoid about Nuclear Power. I think that is why you and other folks consider the idea crazy. We have ships that run on nuclear power and have done so for years.

Not to change the subject...but I have been to Three Mile Island. Every single one of the built in safeguards on that reactor WORKED. It all did exactly what it was supposed to do. And yet like so many other things the knee jerk reaction Americans had was to pull the plug on nuclear energy. This was a huge mistake. We DO have someplace to store spent fuel that is far safer than where it's currently stored, but the Eco-facists have blocked it's use. Don't give me that "nuclear bad" clap-trap! In the south where they're having water supply problems they could use a nuclear powered desalinization plant to make fresh water AND electricity from sea water. Sea level is rising from global warming which is being helped along by coal fired power plants isn't it? Come out into the light of day and take a good look around. If you don't like what you see, crawl back in your cave. But don't drag the rest of us along with you. We return you now to regular programming. We were talking about untapped domestic oil reserves.

OMG......just yesterday afternoon $3.98!! Well I suppose the government will do something when it hits $10 a gallon and the nation begins to RIOT!!!

Three Mile Island was very close to a disastor. I've seen a PBS show on it. And what about Chernoble? A waste land for thousands of years, and people dying of cancer years later. Terrorists are just waiting to throw a monkey wrench in the works.

What we need to do is conserve energy. There is so much wasted, it's pathetic.

scrabler, the Chenobyl reactor was of a type that is not permitted to be used in the USA. Indeed, you won't even find it being used anymore in Russia. It was known to be a dangerous type of reactor back when it exploded that the guys who were operating it were inept as they come. If you read about the Chernobyl event, you'll see that the so-called "engineers" were conducting a "test" to see how little coolant water that they could get away with using. They found out! As regards France and nuclear power, read this article. France is not only building nukes and reprocessing spent fuel, they are also making a killing reprocessing other countries' spent fuel rods. We are seriously missing the boat.

Scrabler, WE ARE USING LESS!

NEW YORK: Early data suggest U.S. oil demand in the first quarter fell by nearly 475,000 barrels a day from a year ago. That would be the biggest decline in any quarter since the drop in the fourth quarter of 2001 that followed the Sept. 11 attacks.

But, analysts said, sliding U.S. demand does not necessarily mean oil prices are heading lower, because global demand is still strong.

Revised data from the Energy Information Administration show oil demand in January slumped 2.2 percent, or 445,000 barrels a day, from a year ago to 20.114 million barrels a day, the lowest level in any month since April 2005. The figure was a steep 574,000 barrels a day, or 2.8 percent, below the preliminary estimate for the month.

We are not the only users of oil. Demand for oil is increasing dramatically in developing countries.

The notion that we can "conserve" our way out of this is without a rational premise.

I am all for conservation, but, the larger reality is that there is plenty of oil around and there are too many "idealistic fools" out there who have at least for the time being, won the political debate.

I don't care who the President is, there will be no Presidential leadership to increase domestic drilling. And even if there where, the Congress won't allow it.

The only question in my mind about drilling in America, is why hasn't it started a long time ago. One of my biggest pet peeves that I hear people that jump on the "Do Good bandwagons", and then act completely different. Never has it been a good policy to hold off on increasing a basic essential to civilized life, (OIL) into the pipeline so that people are forced to find other resources. That is just stupid. That is the same logic that congress used when they mandated that all automakers had to install airbags immediately with 1 to 2 years notice. And the result of that Rush, forced out very bad results. Inflation problems with the 1st (mandatory) generation airbags cause severe injuries and deaths from either their speed or strength.
Build additional refineries immediately and you create jobs, increase production of stored oil barrels and drop the demand. Continue to find new ways to power our lives and all of our lives.

Garbageman is dead right. Civilized and industrialized nations thrive on the skills of it's labor force. Because it people that work that generate taxes. Without jobs, no workers. Understand that this is serious, people who commute for a living are having to either quit or move. Companies are flying out of here faster then the birds, and our borders are as porous as a sponge. Continue on the path we are on and our children will be sorry for it.
