This Sunday we change the clocks, that means it is time to replace the batteries in our smoke detectors. I have a better idea, when you replace the batteries, try setting the alarm off and watch what your family does. You might be surprised. I did just this and they all ignored it! Not one of them checked to see if it was real. So we sat down and had a long talk on fire safety.
Here are some very important ideas that might just save your family one day. Don't have one but two evacuation routes and practice them. Make sure you do this now and then to refresh it in their memories. Have a meeting place somewhere safe that you can do a head count and make sure everyone is out. Remind them that smoke rises practice crawling below the "smoke". Practice stop drop and roll.
Check with your local fire company, most of them have fire prevention material that is geared for children to help them learn. I am sure that if you called they would be more than happy to review fire safety with your family. Firemen and women would rather prevent a fire than have to fight one. Also remember to support your local fire company, alot of our fire companies are run by volunteers who put their lives on hold daily to come and help others during their time of need. For that I send them a true heartfelt THANK YOU!!!
