As I'm sure most of you know, the Smooth Operator program is nearing the end of this years aggressive driver crackdown.  You can certainly tell that drivers know!  The recent increase in aggressive driving on major roads is once again causing accidents.  This morning I witnessed a small honda weaving in and out furiously with no blinkers, riding up people's rears, then flying past them to slam the brakes on so they could ride someone else's rear.   I am seeing it often once again.  I do feel that the crackdown helped, the problem is that 99% of drivers know where the police sit to hide.  I would love for a State Trooper to ride with me one day on my way to work...  I'm sure they see a lot though, and I thank them for getting these people off of the roads who endanger all of us.

David, I heard reports that this storm went from a tropical depression to a CAT-5 in only 27 hours. Is that strictly from the warm water in the gulf? Seems like it took shape fast.

Based on the N.H.C. advisories, I had calculated 39 hours from T.S. to Cat 5. Whatever the time, it was remarkably fast. If I remember correctly, Wilma intensified quickly in 2005 as well.

Warm water is one ingredient. Upper level winds / steering currents play a big role as well. I recall meeting Dr. Steve Lyons from The Weather Channel in Cape May, NJ in May of 2006 say that the media puts WAY too much stock in just SSTs (sea surface temperatures). He demonstrated that the warmest parts of the Atlantic Basin in 2005 were NOT home to the origins of the "big" storms that year. It made an impression on those who had a chance to hear him speak. I think there is still quite a bit about hurricanes that we don't yet fully understand, especially as it pertains to intensity forecasts.

David,

There was a very intersting show on NASA TV Sunday afternoon. It was a 2 hour special about the sun. I didn't know the sun goes through an 11 year cycle of increased solar activity. You should have seen the pics of the sun during calm period vs, when it is raging! They also found our climate "lags" a few years from these events. I cannot possibly give all of the info they did, but if you get a chance to see it, it is very informative.

The documentary "The Great Global Warming Swindle" explores this idea as well, too. You might be able to check it out in pieces on YouTube, if you haven't seen it already.
