Bring It On!

Praying "In the name of Jesus Christ" cost Rev. Danny Harvey his job as a hospital Chaplain at Leesburg Regional Medical Center for seven years.   Rev. Harvey was dismissed from his pastoral post last month because he refused to stop praying any other way ~~ even among the hospital's non-Christian patients, staff and visitors.   Rev. Harvey, 49, said he couldn't stop invoking the name Jesus Christ in prayer.

His firing raises questions about the role of a chaplain in a hospital that treats patients of many different faiths.  Leesburg Regional sits in the center of a largely Christian community, but the city, like much of Central Florida, is becoming increasingly diverse.

Rev. Harvey's dismissal also has drawn the attention of Christian clergy in the Leesburg area. On Saturday they plan to lead a two-mile prayerful walk around the medical center, and they intend to wear T-shirts emblazoned with the rallying cry, "My Jesus, My Freedom, My Stand."

He described Saturday's march as a "uniting of Christians in the name of Jesus Christ" and not an attack on the hospital, whose labor lawyer has threatened to weigh "legal remedies" against Rev. Harvey.

He said he tried to help connect patients with their own faith, but when he was asked to pray, he refused to deny his own. Rev. Harvey said, "I'd say, 'I'm a believer in Jesus Christ and I pray in Jesus Christ's name.   I try to be clear.  I'm not praying to you, the patient. . . . I'm praying to God."

I guess he forgot also he was praying for the patient and not for himself as well.

He was called to minister to the spiritual needs of the patient.   It's not all about Rev Harvey himself but about the people he serves, period.  Chaplains who pray publicly must speak generally.  Not everyone believes in Jesus.  This is a legal issue, not just a spiritual one.   But others will make it into a religious issue.

A chaplain must be able to serve all faiths in a time of crisis, said the Manager of Spiritual Care for Orlando Regional Healthcare System, which employees 50 full and part-time chaplains of different faiths, genders and races.   The hospital follows guidelines of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, which preaches respect for all religions so it would seem Rev. Harvey feels differently and refuses to follow the guidelines with the attitude of things only being his way and belief, so as a result, he lost his job.

No one should impose their personal beliefs or opinions upon those in need, you serve as a universal representative of the divine and if you can't, you need to find a church and serve there which clearly shows that would be the best thing for Rev. Harvey.

The issue was not about praying "In the Name of Jesus Christ", which has been claimed, but that his official duties of his paid position were not being met.  Those duties included being respectful of the different religious beliefs of patients and the ability to lead them in their faith in their time of need.

It would seem that anything different from “In the Name of Jesus Christ” is against Rev. Harvey’s beliefs making this into a religious issue so wouldn’t he be showing a bit of an act of prejudice against others whom believe or pray differently after letting everyone know it's only by his way and nothing else but?

He should keep himself, (out of the goodness of his set heart), availible for those "In the Name of Jesus Christ" only!   But of course he will take charitable donations for it "In the Name of Jesus Christ" of course to help support the cause since he is now off the payroll, just give him a call.    Dial 1800 My Jesus! (not really)

What do you believe?

di you are finally telling the story the way it should be done. It wasn't even reported like this when it first aired on Fox. Fox gave the pity to the reverand and even I felt if this was the real story (the one they reported) then the rev was right. Reading your blof, and hearing the actual reason of the firing, it is ovious the reverand took it upon himself to do the job HIS way, and not according to the standards set forth by the hospital and obeyed by the other clergy that also work for the hospital.

In my opinion, no hospitals should pay any type of preacher. If the family or patient wants to be consoled by a priest, preacher, minister, brother, clan member, witch, medicine man etc then it is up to the patient and their family to make one get their butt up there.

I wonder if this cost for these preachers are included in my fees when I got the hospital. If this is so, I might demand a preacher be in my room 24 hrs a day while I am in the hospital, just so I can tell him how silly is belief is over and over again. If I am paying for these con artists, then I want them there for me to abuse - since I am paying for something I don't want or need. Put that money towards my testing, blood work or x-rays - not some silly con artist to use so he make a living using his ability of communication and persuasion.

Oh c'mon you easily persuaded by low class Jews writing a book to gain stregnth and power and be able to go anywhere for free 2000 years ago when that WAS the only way to increase your family status...through religion, start arguing with di about how wrong the BLEEP

The bible says turn the other cheek, but if I rob your home and rape and kill your family - will you embrace me as your brother and forgive me, or will you want me dead?

After 24 years in the Air Force, I knew many, many chaplains. They strived to be "generic" and respect the religion of the person or family they were dealing with.

Sorry...but I can't support Rev Harvey on this. He was employed to work with ALL religions...and any prayer should have been generic with his own personal beliefs left out.

Wow, now that we KNOW what the real story is, and even I being a Christian myself have to side with the Hospital on this one, at first from the "other story" I sided with the Reverand too, but now I see the truth posted here, this puts it all in a whole different perspective.

So yes, he deserved what he got and those rallying with him to make a statment, if they knew the truth (if they'd bother to read or listen) would NOT take up his cause for this march.

If he has any smarts at all, he'll STAY COMPLETELY OFF HOSPITAL PROPERTY, otherwise him and his followers could AND SHOULD be arrested for trespassing and invoking a protest on PRIVATE PROPERTY! Even though a hospital is OPEN to the General Public, the property is still PRIVATELY OWNED/OPERATED.

So Rev. Harv here may be setting himself and his followers up for some arrests and fines!

Just to get this out of the way, I agree with the hospital. I don't feel bad for Rev. Harvey getting fired.

This isn't the first military chaplin that complained that he can't pray "his way", anyone remember Rev. Lieutenant Klingenschmitt? He's the navy chaplin that went on an 18-day hunger strike in front of the White House because he wasn't allowed to invoke Jesus's name during prayers. I don't know what the result was, but I remember listening to his interview. To be honest, he sounded pretty nutty.

Folks, I seriously doubt that Jesus Christ would really care if you invoked his name or not. I think it was more important to him that you followed his teachings, however you could, whenever you could. Who he is not as important as what he had to say.

So its a case of “false advertisement” (thanks for clearing that up DI) ...I was on his side as well when I saw the story but only because I was under the impression that he had only spoken of “Christ” when invited and asked to come to a bedside as a Christian. If he promised not to push Christ and then pushed it...thats like a person at my front door asking to come in as a “brush salesman” and going Jehovah's witness after he gets threw the door.........LOL

Seems to me the easiest way for these hospitals and other "public institutions" to handle issues of this sort would be to post a Sign/Notice at all doors:

THIS IS A MEDICAL FACILITY.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
This is NOT a Church
This is NOT a Temple
This is NOT a Synagog
This is NOT a Mosque
This is not a Sweat Lodge

ABANDON ALL FAITH
IN ANYTHING ELSE

YOU DO NOT HAVE A PRAYER

Everyone hates a harmless Christian who won't cave in to them.
But, you don't hate an Islamist who will KILL YOU if you don't cave in to him.

The Joke is on you, people.
The Joke is on you.

There are two sides to every story and when it comes to something like this then I want to know both sides when there are gaps within the story not making sence! But I must wonder just what the people who really support him, if they still do no matter what he has done or would they see things in a different perspective!

I rest my case! Now let's debate about it shall we.....anybody....

I always welcome everyone's thoughts and opinions so let me know how you feel and bring it on!

sir your right to say what you did about danny but danny is not telling everybody the truth about his dismisal, other problems are to accounted for as well. and if his flock was to hear of what all he was dismissed for the support would not be as it was today

Flock? What are you a goose?

di I think they took this down because you exposed some really 1 sided shabby reporting on this issue by FOX reporters. Now they removed it from the community before it ran it's course.

Do you remember who reported this? This person was clearly on the side of the preacher or didn't do the right investagating intot he story. Maybe instead of removing your report from the community boards early, maby the reporter should post an apology for his/her 1 sided and wrong reporting on this isue.

Imagine that, a reporter saying they got the story wrong, that's like thinking a politician will say they lied.

Di, I saw your goodbye on my "Christmas in September" blog. I'm going to miss seeing you in the blogs! I don't know what's going on with Fox, but if what you're saying is true, then it's terribly unfair. Hopefully it'll get worked out and we'll be seeing you again soon.

Hmmm, wonder if I'll get banned from making posts now?
