I'm sure you've seen the signs on the subways, the buses and trains, these three simple words: "No Loud Music"

What *IS* loud music?  How loud is too loud?  Is Septa going to buy me headphones so my portable radio isn't too loud?

I'm sure we all know the answer to the third question right off the bat.  No WAY are they going to buy me headphones.

When I think of loud music, I think of back in the days of "boom" boxes carried on the shoulders of a teen with a group of their friends gathered around, with music so loud you couldn't hear yourself think and had to scream for anyone to hear you.  And on the buses, they were not allowed to have it loud like that, but if it was on, it had to be at a 'tolerable' volume.  Most likely you could still hear it almost anywhere on the bus, but it was turned down so people didn't have to scream to talk. 

Now, fast forward 30 years, the advent of the walkman had come and gone, and the majority of music is distributed digitally.  People with their iPods, with earbuds jammed so far in their ears that it's practically touching their brain.  They have the music turned up so loud for them, that even screaming you can't get their attention.  If you sit near them, you can hear parts of the music they are playing, "leaking" out from the headphones. 

Is THAT too loud for the people around them?  Is the fact that music heard by anyone other than the person "owning" the music too loud?  Take a walk up and down a train full of people, usually close to half of the people on the train will be plugged in, listening to their own music.

I have a phone that I can stream music from the internet, but the phone doesn't support sending the music over bluetooth, so I need to listen to it on the "speaker-phone" speaker on my unit.  I had it turned up so I could hear my music without having to hold my phone to my ear, but I was told to turn down my radio, because it was 'TOO LOUD'
