American Idol's New Champ

D A V I D   A R C H U L E T A
OK everyone, it's official in the Amezcua household, David Archuleta is America's next Idol.  This teenage sensation from Murray, Utah has an unbelievable voice, star quality and the linnocence of the boy next door.  My family has been in the music business for many generations and it's amazing to me that family-wide (that means pretty much everyone in my family) agrees that this kid is golden.  If  you missed last weeks episode where David sang his rendition of John Lennon's Imagine you missed a landmark moment in Idol history.  As I watched him I sat in disbelief that this youngster could interpret Lennon's lyrics with such vocal maturity.  I stood up and gave him a standing ovation.  How many times have you done that at home watching TV?  He is the real deal and reminds me of other youngsters like
Sinatra, Celine and Stevie Wonder who have come along over the years and become icons in the music world.  So, I'm with Simon Cowell this time I think it's a done deal, David Archuleta is your next American Idol!

Carlos, I respectfully disagree.

I think Archuleta is good but he is not great in my humble opinion. Everybody is swooning over him because of that "boyish charm" thing he has going on and I believe that will help give him a good shot of winning because of all the teen and tween girls that vote on this show. I also think he is benefiting from how much the judges (Simon in particular) have been gushing all over him from day one - what they say has a big impact on how people vote - by the time the voting rounds begin, the judges have already laid the groundwork that has shaped and molded some pre-conceived opinions for people.

Personally, among the guys, I think David Hernandez has the best voice. Archuleta has that charm, but his voice quality isn't the best. His tone is a little too airy and from a pure singing perspective, I think his chops take a seat behind the likes of David Hernandez and even Chikeze.

Sorry but I don't watch idol just catch a tidbit here or there. Hopefully those good kids will get their breaks and find happiness with their successes.

David Archuletta has a God given voice.The only problem I see is if he is mishandeled professionally.... I hope Simon will take care not to let this happen! Carlos.... your musical background with your family will let you know what I mean, and perhaps watch over this young talent. His gift is indeed God given.

Carlos,

I think there are a group of people who have been saying prayers for David Archuleta since the day he sang for the group in the first season. I think it will come to a show down between him and Brooke White at the end. I hope he gets the prize.

ALTERNATIVE BIO Dude grew up on the shores of San Diego longboarding, crusin' the streets in my '66 VW and playing soccer. I played guitar in my dad's mariachi band for like ten years and saved enough money to go to college. I got straight A's in English 'cause I had to learn it as a second language. I started broadcasting on my college radio station reading news in the morning. I took a break for two years to be a missionary for my church in Guatemala and El Salvador, two beautiful countries. When I returned I surfed, played soccer, played guitar in a rock band, waited tables and went back to college radio. Along my rambling trail I met a real cute girl and married her. I moved to television reporting and had a bunch of kids by the time I was thirty. Still surfing, still playing guitar but now clearly a devoted husband and father. Dude, I even got to do a story for Walter Cronkite! I was gone alot from my family in those early years but Mary was my rock and held down the fort. Don't worry we had lots of quality family time! Somewhere in the haze that is my memory, my kids grew up to be pretty amazing. I landed at KTLA and spent 16 wonderful years there. In September of last year I parked my VW, surfboard and guitar at Fox11 and dude, I am loving life!
