People are always asking me about my cars, yes I have a couple more than I should but I love cars especially old ones.  Was that a run on sentence?  Sorry Mr. Shaver.  Wiley Shaver was my high school English teacher.  Anyway, with all this talk about Global Caliente and hybrid this and that, I dutifully drive my '67 VW.  It is my trusty car and gets great gas mileage and it doesn't pollute too much.  My VW van is a little bigger but it too is environmentally friendly.  Why am I telling you this? Because some 40 year old cars are actually just as good as anything produced today and still gets me comfortably from point  A to point B.  Sure I go slow and sometimes people honk at me on PCH to get out of the way, I just smile and wave.  Dude I'm in no hurry.  If I AM in a hurry then ok, I get it, I jump into my Porsche Turbo and leave you all in the dust!

nothing wrong with driving a bug, unless it's the new bug. let's face it, it's a chick's car. but old school bugs are cool.

VW bug?

I take back all the mean things I said about you, which contained split infinitives and ended in a prepositional phrase.

And I like the Fox11 10 o'clock news.

I see you love the Kraught cars...sweet! You probably should have a MB too while you are at it. Honestly the older bug was a great product and yeah very reliable. The newer bugs and MB procuts have a lot of quality problems from what I am seeing, both electrical and especially mechanical with the newer bugs. I have always said the best cars were the simple ones from the 60's and mid to late 50's as well. The only two problematic issues with cars being (as I was a automechanic and auto body man many years ago), are the wiring on older cars and the rust issues with particularly VW's and especially older Porsches. 911's and the 912 Porsches have always had rust issues under the fenders front mainly, back a little less. I like the mid to late 60's GM Detroit muscle cars myself, but even junker ones are too expensive to own anymore, the bad ones also cost a fortune now.

A '67 VW BUS Carlos? Now that is the ultimate man's minivan! And if I'm correct, that was the year Volkswagen switched over to the 12 volt electrical system, correct? What other older cars do you have Carlos? I happen to have a 1962 Rambler Classic Custom Sedan that my dad bought new...3 speed column shift stick, 196 OHV 6 cylinder, a 1968 Ford F100 Long Bed Pickup...3 speed 360 V8, custom camper shell which I added on, and both of those are fun to drive. I inherited the truck from my paternal uncle when he passed away...I even remember as a 5 year old when he bought it new in the summer of '68.

Here's to the ultimate manly man's minivan: the VW BUS! Carlos, keep driving it around!

Oh yes, for everyone here: all old cars can be plenty of fun to drive around, right? Right!

And to you Samo: though the women like the new VW Bug, it can still be a man's car...get a stick shift for one thing, then an awesome stereo that cranks with pleasure! Then it might be considered a universal car for both men and women!

And also notice guys: Carlos said VW Van! I'm sure that he's been talking all along about a VW Van...and I still stand by my remark about the VW BUS...it's the manly man's minivan!

Carlos --

I had a 1965 VW bug (new at the time) when I got my first TV news job... at KTLA, in 1965. (We were still doing the 4:30P news there in black and white back then!) I remember the car cost $2,500... and was a joy to drive. I am in Prius-land now (on my second one) but often wish I still had that 65 bug to tool around in. So keep on truckin' in that '67 van... I smile every time I see you in it.

Cheers, Bob

I traded in a Caddy way back when, for a VW. I got a new car and a bundle of money to boot. I immediately saved a fortune on gas. And I thought this was great way to discourage my band members from making me take my car when we went on the road. It didn't, they all piled in and when ever we arrived at the gigs or concerts, we would get a laugh as they piled out of my Volks, looking more like Ringling Brothers CLOWNS, that Rock Musicians!

I had 69 & eventually bought my friends 65 as a spare and I'm still kicking myself for ever getting rid of them! They got through severe snow storms, never over heated and were fun to drive!
I miss 'em!

Hi Carlos, I once met you at Bumper to Bumper detailing in Westlake village during a PCA event where we were shown how they 'properly' apply touch up paint and apply window tint. I beleive, your 996 was the guiney pig for that. Nice to see that youve moved up in the Porsche Hierach.............I personally drive a 69 911S and a 64 356SC.........I know what you mean about old cars. My 74 carrera has 760,000 miles on it and still gets 24 mph and never breaks down!.........Old cars rock and Old Porsches RULE!
P.S. I heard on KTLA's morning news, that was funny,,,,,,,,,,

67 huh, I have a 65 and it is great. It may not look the best but it gets me around and I love the attention I get from it. One because it sounds like a tigger and second it smokes. LOL. Everyone should experience driving an old car with no AC, heater or power stearing. Kept driving your 67 Carlos.

Careful on the smoking bug. California may be getting ready to try and confiscate cars older then 7 years, including my Lincoln. Over my Dead you know what before I give in to Marxists like that. They also are trying to ban flush toilettes too, like they did the original lightbulb and fireplaces...these people are all nuts.

Carlos:

That's a nice picture you have on display! By the way, I forgot to mention that in Cypress, there is a VW parts place near Cypress College, in case you are in North Orange County, and happen to need a part or two for any of the Volkswagens you have.

ALTERNATIVE BIO Dude grew up on the shores of San Diego longboarding, crusin' the streets in my '66 VW and playing soccer. I played guitar in my dad's mariachi band for like ten years and saved enough money to go to college. I got straight A's in English 'cause I had to learn it as a second language. I started broadcasting on my college radio station reading news in the morning. I took a break for two years to be a missionary for my church in Guatemala and El Salvador, two beautiful countries. When I returned I surfed, played soccer, played guitar in a rock band, waited tables and went back to college radio. Along my rambling trail I met a real cute girl and married her. I moved to television reporting and had a bunch of kids by the time I was thirty. Still surfing, still playing guitar but now clearly a devoted husband and father. Dude, I even got to do a story for Walter Cronkite! I was gone alot from my family in those early years but Mary was my rock and held down the fort. Don't worry we had lots of quality family time! Somewhere in the haze that is my memory, my kids grew up to be pretty amazing. I landed at KTLA and spent 16 wonderful years there. In September of last year I parked my VW, surfboard and guitar at Fox11 and dude, I am loving life!
