I've been at Fox 11 for a couple of months now and I'm wondering how many of you followed me over here from KTLA.  I enjoyed and appreciated all the great messages I received and I am so looking forward to this new chapter in my broadcasting career.  As you know,  I love to innovate and approach my work with a great deal of enthusiasm.  I have always said that my work is only a reflection of the tremendously talented people with whom I work.  For 16 years I worked with some incredibly talented people and I miss them, they are like family to me, but now I have a new group of colleagues who are an amazing crew.  Fox 11 has a commitment to news which I haven't experienced in years.  In my opinion it's the best news department in  Los Angeles and we prove it every single day by breaking stories no one else has and covering breaking news better than anyone else.  I'm not hyping KTTV just to talk, I really believe it!  The reason I came here is because this place is truly committed to covering news and serving the community.  I hope this blog gives you an opportunity to communicate with me about issues you care about.  From time to time I'll drop a line and give you my take.  For now happy blogging and hey, old friends welcome to Fox11!

Carlos, glad to find you again. I have loved watching you for so long on KTLA. Sorry I don't live there in that LA area where I could watch you. I live up here near Bakersfield so we don't get a lot of choices with LA channels. I sure wish we were able to see you. I miss getting the days started with your smile and good humor. Miss ya...

Dear Carlos,

I was wondering why you were not on the morning show on the other station. That group looks really sad and boring without you there. I bet Mark misses you the most. I love watching a Hispanic on TV that I can relate to. I was never so thrilled as the time when I saw you join the Marachi band at Olvera Street and break into song and play the guitar with them. That was beautiful! Your the best! =)

Welcome aboard Carlos, I remember you from KTLA...BTW you know the secret donut place Rick Dickert is desperately looking for...keep it a secret and let Rick and his crew find the place you plugged several times in the past, cause a former KTLA flygirl used to frequent that Van Nuys donut place bigtime...lol. They still have her picture there! Anyhow torture couldn't be sweeter than a _ _ _ _ _ Donut and hot coffee in the wee morning hours. Welcome aboard!

Hey carlos, i just wanted to be honest with you about something. when i heard john beard was leaving, i felt bad. i have watched him for many years, and i really enjoyed the chemistry he and christine have together. so when i heard that you were gonna take his spot, i was like "who the hell is this jerk?".

but now that i have seen you for a while, i think they made a good choice in picking you take john's spot after he retired. you seem to fit in really well, and the adjustment wasn't painful at all. you have done a great job so far, and i can't wait to see many more years of you on the air.

as for what i would like to see more of....hmm... well i guess more of your opinion/feelings about stories. i know you do that sometimes, but i like to see more of it. but that's just me. anyways, i'll catch you later, and take care.

Carlos,

Welcome aboard! I've been looking forward to seeing a blog of yours...Cheers to you! It's great to see you comfortable with the original weatherman named Mark (Mark Thompson of course!). I hope you're still in touch with "the other Mark" (Mark Kriski). I take it you either spoke with Hal Eisner regarding "the other Hal" nickname...if you're wondering where I'm going, you can ask Hal, and have him read this comment...I'm sure he'll laugh about this one! Feel free to tell both Mark Thompson and Mark Kriski about this one too! (I know that Mark Thompson is on vacation as I'm writing this). I work in radio behind the scenes, so I know what it's like preparing materials for a live broadcast...you really know how to fly with the punches, and make it look much easier than it really is. By the way, if you happen to tell Rick Dickert the name of the doughnut shop, I'll get a good laugh out of it, but I'm sure Rick will keep it a secret and pretend to not know the name of the shop for a little while (hee hee!). I am a regular viewer of both Fox 11 and My 13 news...you may have heard some of my email responses or read them if Rick and Lauren shared them with you or other staff members. Take care now!

Carlos:

I jumped ship, from KTLA mornings, a few years ago and ended up watching the 3 stooges (tongue-in-cheek) on channel 11, though more at my partner's insistance than of my own volition.

Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the typical morning news "giggle-chatter", but I guess hard news is saved for the evening hours.

That's why I'm happy to see you at 10pm. I'm not easily impressed by faux-dramatics (ie Ch 7's Micah Ohlman) or by the pregnant pauses so often used for effect.

Instead, I appreciate news delivered objectively and intelligently after conducting the appropriate responsible research. As with Hal Fishman, it is clear you are news-aware and well-read. You don't just read from the prompter; you can actually carry the newscast on your own.

Thanks for giving So Cal a believable newsman and not giving in to the cute puppy syndrome that has so plagued recent journalism.

Gee, it seems that I write like a high-school student, too. Well, at least I'm in good company and, besides, isn't HS where we're taught correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar?

Carlos, you have most definitely done an excellent job taking over for John. I mean you can really see the chemistry, and you all seem to get along really well. It's just really fun to watch, and I'm glad to hear you all every week day. You all keep it real, with the hard facts, but still make it fun to watch at the same time.

Keep up the good work, you guys are doing great!

Oh yes, Carlos:

I'm more than glad to see that you and the Fox Blog Team have removed that one Beverly Hills guy who insulted you. That guy is a loose cannon, and has put up comments that he should be ashamed of on at least one of the Fox Women reporters' blogs...as you can see, I will not mention his name for all dignity's sake. That guy I'm writing about has some good comments at times, but people must watch out when he responds to a blog. One thing that I think is your biggest strength is this: you always do things with dignity on air. You couldn't have made a better choice in joining Fox 11...originally, I thought you were going to be promoted to anchor KTLA's evening news when Hal Fishman died...but it was God's will that you came here.

Again, I'm glad that you or someone else on the team removed that one guy's comment...I restrained myself from chewing him out publicly when I saw his remarks.

By the way, I may have some wacky comments at times, but I am more serious in person. Have fun now!

E, you've highlighted a fascinatng point! when Fishman died-- who did not get the ch5 job? McEwing should be slotted at 10PM. chuck is not an improvement to KTTV news. His blog demonstrated his thinking. Supression of ideas, while being the perogative of chuck, does not remove the truth of my remarks. critiquing my words would've been too hurtful. editing his own blog would have been appropriate!

Abe,

I don't know what the reasons are, but I believe Carlos is here for a higher purpose that none of us will understand in our own lifetime. Now, for what reasons John Beard and Fox 11 parted ways, we will never know in our lifetime, and it's priviledged information between Fox and Beard, but I suspect that Carlos saw something with the Los Angeles Times which prompted him to search for a new position...Time Warner does own KTLA 5. It could have been something to do with a contract, or other reasons, but I do disagree with you about Carlos. I think Carlos will be with KTTV for quite some time, and I see some enthusiasm in his reporting and anchoring. The most likely scenario is this: Carlos applied for work at KTTV long before Hal Fishman got seriously ill and died, and landed the 10 o'clock anchor job with John Beard resigning. I saw some things which made me wonder if John Beard was planning on making an exit before they announced the anchor change...such as a number of nights off...just very subtle hints. I had a video instructor who was an associate director of news at KCBS television who gave us some inside scoops on anchor contracts and the happenings between various anchors like Jim Lampley, Bree Walker, and Keith Olbermann. I haven't forgotten the stories from 20 years ago.

Measure S phone tax could tap Internet usage
By Kerry Cavanaugh, Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 12/10/2007 11:10:20 PM PST

Despite assurances that a telephone-users tax on the February ballot is simply aimed at modernizing how Los Angeles taxes communications systems, wording in the measure opens the door to also taxing Internet access.
Federal law currently prohibits taxes on Internet access and e-mail - but that law sunsets in 2014, and some watchdogs said Monday that if the broadly written Measure S telephone tax passes it could allow the city to tax Internet access without additional voter approval.
"How do you say you're not taxing the Internet when the statute specifically says it's covering DSL, Voice-Over-Internet protocol, text messaging, instant messaging and PCS?" said Walter Moore, who is writing the opposition to the measure for the Feb. 5 ballot.
"You don't need a law degree to realize this is a tax on the Internet and wireless and all that."
But city officials said that while the measure is broadly written to cover changing communications technology, it is not designed to tax the Internet.
"For the foreseeable future, this is the law of the land. It's very clear for us it doesn't allow for taxation of the Internet," said Nick Velasquez, spokesman for City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo.
And counsel to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the city would have to seek voter approval even if federal law changed to allow taxation of Internet access.
"We would have to go back to voters to update our ordinance," spokeswoman Janelle
Erickson said. "O

Well Rick Dickert is following in Jennifer York's footsteps, he located Mama's Donuts at Sherman Way and Balboa. That should keep the crew on the cold mornings.

Hey i used to watch you on the morning show on KTLA. And yes i still watch the KTLA morning show, just because i feel its much much much better than FOX's morning show. But for the 10 o clock news i have always tuned in to FOX. When i saw you come to the FOX team, i was skeptical. Then i saw you on the first day and was like ok hes a damn good fit to the team. Id just like to see some small segments where we get to hear your opinions more often. But anyways GOOD JOB keep it up.

I think you would be great in a different venue. Maybe Colorado, Arizona or New Mexico.
You will not draw enough viewers to keep the
station in the ratings.

With more than 30 years in television news Carlos Amezcua has covered stories around the globe. He's been honored with many awards including 7 Emmys. His career has included assignments for CBS News, NBC News, CNN and Fox News. For 16 years Carlos was the principal news anchor on the award wining KTLA Morning News. In September of 2007 Carlos joined the number one Fox11 Ten O'clock News as Co-anchor with Christine Devine. ALTERNATIVE BIO Dude grew up on the shores of San Diego longboarding, crusin' the streets in my '66 VW and playing soccer. I played guitar in my dad's mariachi band for like ten years and saved enough money to go to college. I got straight A's in English 'cause I had to learn it as a second language. I started broadcasting on my college radio station reading news in the morning. I took a break for two years to be a missionary for my church in Guatemala and El Salvador, two beautiful countries. When I returned I surfed, played soccer, played guitar in a rock band, waited tables and went back to college radio. Along my rambling trail I met a real cute girl and married her. I moved to television reporting and had a bunch of kids by the time I was thirty. Still surfing, still playing guitar but now clearly a devoted husband and father. Dude, I even got to do a story for Walter Cronkite! I was gone alot from my family in those early years but Mary was my rock and held down the fort. Don't worry we had lots of quality family time! Somewhere in the haze that is my memory, my kids grew up to be pretty amazing. I landed at KTLA and spent 16 wonderful years there. In September of last year I parked my VW, surfboard and guitar at Fox11 and dude, I am loving life!
